    Hello,
    (I'm a first-timer here).

Is there a way to add/extend over a second line/row to the NS 7.1 Personal Bookmarks Toolbar instead of having to arrow down?

Is there a way to add Bookmark folders to all the unused space on the right side of the Menu Toolbar?

I have a large collection of those great bookmarklets/favelets, & I'm asking these questions so that I can have easier access.

Also, I've endured some significant upgrade nightmares the last half year (especially with Zone Alarm Pro). I love NS 7.1 & would rather not upgrade. Is it a significant security upgrade, or is it a cosmetic/feature upgrade? If it's not broken, I may not want to fix it :) .

    Thank you for your Help.
I hope my researched list below is helpful for others.

I use XP SP2 & my security is already strong:
    FREE
    ====
Ad-Aware SE (& the additional plugins).
Script Defender (set & forget & it'll ask permission before scripts etc can execute)
SpybotS&D (start in easy basic mode; learn advanced mode if you want later).
    SpywareBlaster
    SpywareGuard
    MRU Blaster
    CWS Shredder
    HiJackThis
    StartUp Inspector For Windows
    TCPView
    MS Port Reporter
    IsUsedBy
    FileAlyzer

    PAID
    ====
VET (but almost as good is EZAV in EZArmor, below).
Zone Alarm Pro (but you can get it free 1 year in EZArmor MS/CA promo).
BENIGN (best Email protection including vs. beacons).
Bloomba/SAProxyPro email client (just acquired by Yahoo & no longer for sale, so your best alternative is the free Pegasus Mail).
MailWasherPro (a free non Pro is available).
McAfee AntiSpyware (best vs keyloggers; many retails lately have free or near free rebates).
Trojan Hunter (AVs & other anti pests etc are not dedicated anti-trojans; their's no effective freeware anti-trojan).
Pest Patrol Plus (but research results as many are false positives).
    Internet Trace Destructor.

    Welcome to the Forum, Marklet!

    Marklet,

Firefox allows you to create Toolbars, add items to the right of the Menu Bar, etc. Take a look at these sites:
    http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/why/
    http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_firefox.asp
    http://texturizer.net/firefox/tips.html
    http://texturizer.net/firefox/features.html

For Netscape 7.1, you might try reorganizing Bookmarks into Folders and subfolders. I have 16 folders on my Personal Toolbar which contain all 755 KB of my Bookmarks. Have you thought about making a Tab group for your Bookmarklets? That would add a second Toolbar. See this Screen Shot which shows my Personal Toolbar and a Tab group.

Unfortunately Netscape doesn't have the UI features which are included the newer Firefox. There are some major bug fixes, including security, in Netscape 7.2, and even more in Mozilla 1.7.3, and Firefox 0.10.1.

    HTH,

    Ramona

    Thank You Ramona

I read your links & they probably bring me closer to a date that I'll try Firefox. Not today :) especially since finding PrefBar yesterday. Only wasted space now is on Menu Toolbar in Netscape.

As to reorganizing Bookmarks into Folders and subfolders: did that long time ago. Not always easy to remember still where everything is, so space for more folders would have been nice on Toolbars.

As to making a Tab Group, could you please explain or URL reference that?

In the meantime, I came across & installed PrefBar2.3; although it says not tested for Netscape, it works perfectly. The Developer was also great & very quick in replying to an email. There's a Button that clears/cleans all cache, history, & the location bar in one click. At my request, he's researching time permitting a new Button that would add also cleaning cookies to it. The way I customized the PrefBar allows me to one click (in order shown left to right):
    *see robots.txt [?]
    *see page's freshness date [Date]
*clear caches, history, location bar [MOP]
    *change to 800x600 [800]
    *undo 800x600 [^]
*check/uncheck page vs user controlled fonts [Font]
    *increase fonts [+]
    *decrease fonts [-]
    *zoom pointed to image [Z]
*check/uncheck page vs user colors [Tint]
    *check/ uncheck images [Pix(R)] Note: R reminds refresh/reload required.
    *check/uncheck Javascript [JS]
    *check/uncheck Popups [Pop]
    *check/uncheck Referrers [Ref]
    *find words in page [Find]
*menu drop choices for spoofing User Agent [Browser]
(Note: most of above are Buttons included in PrefBar options. A few are customized addition by me using create new button, choosing link type, & pasting in the javascript URL from my Bookmarklets).

I accomplished above within the real estate space of one toolbar line by easily customizing/editing/reducing the original label names to what I show in brackets{} following each above choice.

"There are some major bug fixes, including security, in Netscape 7.2... ".
Are there any negatives/bugs after upgrading 7.1 to 7.2?
Is there a page you advise reading on tips for how to best upgrade from 7.1 to 7.2 and maintain all settings/preferences etc.?
As I now love PrefBar & it's not tested by Developer in Netscape but works perfectly on 7.1, I'd 'hate' to in any way lose that by upgrading to 7.2?

    "HTH "
    Thank you. You're great!

BTW, an important note on 1 item in my SW list on my first post. The great Developer of CWSHredder stopped updating a while back due to bandwidth, time constraints, & difficulty of handling new variants with the tool, so people stopped checking for updates. It has now been acquired & updated to 2.0 by Intermute. It's still a separate FREE product, but just includes links on it that try to sell a trial of others products I don't advise on my list.

First post, I shared my favorite security SW. Now, I'll share my favorite: General SW: YahooPOPS, Yankee Clipper III, AquaScape3D, EggTimer Plus, NERO Ultra, ChessMaster 9000, Chess-It.
HW Favorites: Logitech MX700 Mouse (need to check out the new MX1000).
Pet Peeve: After much research & shopping, they just don't make high quality 19" CRTs anymore. I looked at almost every one. Prices & quality are both much lower than 4 years ago (when Viewsonic PS790 was great). Tip: best I found were 2 mid-priced models by believe it or not HYUNDAI! Their V995 (US$160), & better Q995 (US $185 but store only had 1 on display, none in the box).

Upgrading to Netscape 7.2 will have no effect on your Profile. It remains untouched by an uninstall/install. Take a look at this page, which outlines a "Custom" install, which I always suggest:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee65/index5.html

You don't have to uninstall Netscape 7.1, as you can run both Versions with no problem as long as they are installed in separate locations. The Custom Install page outlines how to do that.

If you don't wish to run both Versions, then follow this guideline:

    Uninstall Netscape 7.1 using Add/Remove

Delete the Netscape 7.1 Programs folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape

Delete the 1.4f_2003062408 folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4f_2003062408

    REBOOT YOUR PC

    Now install Netscape 7.2

Unfortunately, you will have to reinstall all extensions.

Ramona, I plunged into 7.2 :) ; New questions, please?

    Hi Ramona,

Thanks for all your great Help. It did convince me to install 7.2 (I'll keep 7.1 a while just in case). When I decide I no longer need 7.1, should I just delete it's directory, or what do I do to keep my Profiles, preferences/settings/etc intact? It seems 7.2 & 7.1 are sharing them.

I copied the small rdf files for each of my Profiles for the PrefBar to media before I installed 7.2 for safety. You wrote re PrefBar in the last post "Unfortunately, you will have to reinstall all extensions ". Just to let you know, I didn't have to do that. The PrefBar with my preferences/customizations carried over into 7.2; the whole 7.2 seems to be sharing all data from each of my 7.1 Profiles including the PrefBar.

Now, if I may four 7.2 questions (especially the first 2):

Even though, I did not select any plugins during install, it seems to have installed them anyway? In Menu, Help | About Plug-ins, the resulting page shows everything including ActiveX Enabled. I think of that as an IE vulnerability. Why is NS supporting ActiveX; any reasons I should keep it? How do I get rid of it? Do you suggest dumping any others?

The Password Manager now has an option to show the actual passwords. I used an unlabled bookmarklet in 7.1 to reveal asteriks if I needed that. I don't want that option so easily available if someone else sits at my PC. I can think of other workarounds to that situation, but I'd prefer to just disable that. Can/How do I do that?

Netscape is sometimes 'hijacking' me when I open the browser to Netscape pages (usually trying to sell their dialup ISP). In preferences each Profile is showing my correct opening Home page choice. Spybot, Adaware, & McAfee show no BHO. How do I correct this? [EDIT: this seems to have now stopped after several open/close].

This only happens on opening 7.2 (not 7.1): Zone Alarm Pro pops up that Netscape is attempting to receive Server rights. Each time I have to say No/Deny as to not unstealth & open ports. In ZAP, both NS 7.1 & 7.2 have Access rights (as they should), but not Server rights. Other programs sometimes display this Server rights request after install, but once denied they stop asking. Netscape 7.2 keeps asking. This stops the browser from opening till I click Deny. Any ideas on how to stop this weird behavior? [EDIT: wow, this also all of a sudden stopped happening & hopefully won't return]

    Thank you very much.

I'm confused here, as in the first paragraph you said 7.2 and 7.1 were sharing a Profile, but then in the second paragraph you talk about each of your Profiles. If you are sharing one Profile between the two Versions, you are in for serious problems. Each Version must have its own Profile. Create a Profile for 7.2, and hopefully you will be O.K., but if not, then you may have to create two new Profiles. That is, if I am understanding you correctly.

If you decide you no longer need 7.1, then follow my guideline in yesterday's post for uninstalling. Always use Add/Remove to uninstall any program.

It's Mozilla ActiveX control and plugin support for Windows Media Player, i.e., it's a plugin. Netscape and Mozilla don't use Active X, as does IE. To remove the plugin, simply rename the npmozax.dll file, or delete the file, if you don't plan to use WMPlayer.

You would have to opt out of saving passwords. To the best of my knowledge there is no UI for disabling the feature.

You can change your Program Setting in ZA for Server rights, allowing or disallowing for any program.

    Marklet,

I asked the Champions if there is a UI for disable the Save/Hide Passwords, and they don't know of any either. I looked in about:config using "signon" and "password" but saw nothing there either. I think your only option here would be to use a Master Password.

"I'm confused here, as in the first paragraph you said 7.2 and 7.1 were sharing a Profile, but then in the second paragraph you talk about each of your Profiles ".
I have 7 Profiles. They were created with the Profile Manager in Netscape 4.61; I was very happy with the Email Software in 4.61 so when I installed Netscape 7.1, I kept 4.61 installed & used it for email only. I liked its email program because it wasn't Microsoft & had better searching capability than other email clients. (Then a year ago I found/trialed/bought Bloomba; was just bought by Yahoo, & no longer sold). When I installed NS7.1, it began sharing my 7 Profiles from 4.61; I didn't do anything other than recreating the Profile names in 7.1 Profile Manager & it recognized that the Profile names existed on my PC & pointed to them. Both 4.61 & 7.1 are installed in separate Folders under C/Program Files. Based on your earlier post, I totally separated 7.2 by Custom installing directly into C (not under Program Files). 7.2 created a desktop icon of its own. As soon as I clicked the icon, it opened the Profile Manager & had my 7 Profiles. I opened/checked each Profile & each one had the same settings, bookmarks, history, cookies, everything etc just like each Profile's counterpart in 4.61 & 7.1; there was never any conflict before, & there appears to be no conflict now? 4.61, 7.1, & 7.2 are all sharing the same 7 Profiles. The Profiles are located in C/Documents & Settings/Owner/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles.

"If you are sharing one Profile between the two Versions, you are in for serious problems. Each Version must have its own Profile. Create a Profile for 7.2, and hopefully you will be O.K., but if not, then you may have to create two new Profiles ".
Sharing 7 Profiles with all 3 versions per above. The Profile names correspond to 7 usernames with my Comcast ISP. May I respectfully say that it seems fine the way it is? If it never created trouble before or today, is future trouble definite?

"If you decide you no longer need 7.1, then follow my guideline in yesterday's post for uninstalling. Always use Add/Remove to uninstall any program ".
Based on additional data I provided here, could that remove my Profiles? I definitely don't want to lose them.

"You can change your Program Setting in ZA for Server rights, allowing or disallowing for any program ".
Yes, I know that, but it's never a good idea to give anything Server rights unless it requires them to function & you lock it down with complicated Expert Rules. Many programs now request Server Rights even though they do not need it to function. The standard course in Zone Alarm is you Deny Server Rights; if the program won't function you then have a choice of not using it or allowing Server Rights that open ports & create security vulnerabilities. Not a good idea. Defeats the whole security purpose even if you only open 1 of 60,000 doors/ports. Normally when you Deny Server Rights, programs function & don't request it again until you upgrade the program, or sometimes after doing a XP Windows Update. In this case though, Netscape 7.2 kept requesting Server rights each time I opened it; then the behavior stopped for a while, & now it started requesting again. For test purposes, opening each of 7 Profiles in 7.1 still does not cause this behavior. So with 7.2, it's a nuisance to have a delay & then to have to click Deny most times I open it. Any ideas?

Thank you very much. I'm sorry for not previously explaining these issues clearly.

Thanks Ramona. I already use a Master Password. Silly me, I was concerned about security if a friend uses my PC (to not reveal those passwords), but I forgot they won't be able to see/show them because the Password Manager is locked until the Master Password is entered. So it's actually a nice feature for someone who doesn't have an Asterisk JS & needs to remember a PW to use on another PC.

Sorry for wasting your time on this point.

You can count on it. Before, you weren't sharing Profiles with Netscape 7.1 and 4.61. The 4.61 Profile was migrated and converted to Netscape 7.1. They are two different programs with totally unique codes. Netscape 7.1 and 7.2 are the same program and share the same code base.

From the Netscape 7.0 - 7.2 Release Notes:

    Preferences

Do not share a profile between Netscape and Mozilla browsers. Doing this can lead to unpredictable results, which may include loss of Search settings and preferences and unchecked growth of the Bookmarks file (large enough to freeze your system). It is best to create a new profile for each or manually copy (and change the name) an existing profile.

    ---
You can, however, share your Bookmarks, Mail, and Cache.

Profiles remain untouched by an uninstall.

I've haven't had ZA ask for any Gecko Browser Server rights since the first Version of ZA I installed. I would say that is a ZA problem and not Netscape.

I'm sorry Ramona. I'm very confused now. 7.1 & 7.2 are both reading from & writing to the same location C/Documents & Settings/Owner/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/(7 subfolders for the 7 profile names). Logically, I hope the warning would only apply if both 7.1 & 7.2 were opened at the same time. I have NOT done that, so hopefully I haven't caused any corruption.

I still don't 'really' understand the problem because I didn't tweak anything as to the Profiles location. The link in your last post includes a list of where each OS including XP default stores the Profiles. The location on my PC is the default location. When I installed 7.2, I didn't 'tell' it to read the same Profiles that 7.1 has; it just did that by itself.

I'm also confused by the language here of "Do not share a profile between Netscape and Mozilla browsers ". I understand the connections between what's called Netscape & what's called Mozilla or Seamonkey, & that Netscape includes Mozilla folders (or folders & files that are common to both). However, I've never installed Mozilla suite; I've only installed Netscape versions. Therefore, does that sentence apply to me; am I sharing a profile between Netscape & Mozilla browsers, Or am I sharing Profiles between Netscape browsers? Isn't that language distinction important?

Further confusing is "You can, however, share your Bookmarks, Mail, and Cache ". That seems to contradict the earlier sentences. I'm not saying you contradicted yourself. I'm guessing the confusion might be that maybe I used the wrong terminology somewhere. Here's why this confuses me:
The 7 Profiles that are being shared are stored in what Netscape calls the default location for XP (C/Documents & Settings/Owner/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/). Each of the 7 profiles therein individually contains those Bookmarks, Cache etc that you said you can share. Then how could I be sharing those without sharing the Profiles they're located in? Otherwise, if I had a Profile in 7.1 named A & created a Profile in 7.2 called AA, how would they even known to share bookmarks etc? (If I simply copied those files from one to the other that would not be sharing as they would only be the same until a change was made in either of them & they wouldn't be reading/writing to the same file).

If it's wrong for 7.1 & 7.2 to share the same Profiles, then why are they sharing the same default location of C/Documents & Settings/Owner/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/?

I'm very sorry Ramona, do you understand all the things I said above & why I'm confused?

Anyway to take it to the next step, I'm ready to soon Uninstall 7.1; will that solve the concern over sharing Profiles (I assume from your prior post that the Profiles & then their default location wouldn't change)? *****PLEASE though, even if the answer is Yes from you, I'd still very much appreciate your answers/logic to the confusion in my other questions even if a Yes answer here makes the other questions functionally moot.*****

Thank you so very much for your continuing Help & patience.

"Do not share a profile between Netscape and Mozilla browsers ".

Namely the settings, or preferences. These can give you trouble because the language in Configuration may and is different. This causes problems.

    " I'm very confused now. 7.1 & 7.2 are both reading from & writing to the same location C/Documents & Settings/Owner/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/(7 subfolders for the 7 profile names). "

Indeed, you are confused. You are mixing up Profiles with accounts. You left out an important item in your path, above, i.e. that it should be:

    C/Documents & Settings/Owner/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/default/blahblah.slt/

Then in the .slt folder, there is a Mail folder which contains your accounts.

"When I installed 7.2, I didn't 'tell' it to read the same Profiles that 7.1 has; it just did that by itself. "
As long as there is a single profile, any Netscape or Mozilla will go after it.

After reading the rest of your post, you left me totally confused, because what you say appears that you have seven Profiles. But, I don't understand what mechanism you are using, nor where the profiles are, on the hard drive.

I think that there is as much chance that you foul things up by sharing a single profile beteween Netscapes, because they are so different from each other.
I was going to quote moe of your message, but there is no way that I can reply without having a complete path for all those profiles. And, where are the subfolders physically located.

Perhaps I am mixing terms. I don't know. I have 7 different usernames (if I can use that term) that were initially created by the Profile Manager in Netscape 4.61 & were then copied by 7.1 to that XP Mozilla default folder, & are now shared by 7.2 (I've been referring to them as Profiles because they were created by the Profile Manager & are stored in Windows Explorer in the Profiles Folder I listed.

"...because what you say appears that you have seven Profiles. But, I don't understand what mechanism you are using, nor where the profiles are, on the hard drive ".
Sorry, I'll try to explain better. When I click a Netscape icon on my Desktop, the Profile Manager opens for me to select which of the 7 names I want to select to open. Each name has it's own associated unique set of preferences, bookmarks, history etc.; these names in the Profile Manager are what I've been referring to as the 7 Profiles.

"I was going to quote moe of your message, but there is no way that I can reply without having a complete path for all those profiles. And, where are the subfolders physically located ".
    OK here it is:
    My Computer/PRESARIO (C:)/Documents & Settings/Owner/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/
Clicking the +Profiles reveals 7 folders. Each folder name corresponds to a listing in the Netscape Profile Manager. Clicking on any of these folders then shows a folder that ends .slt (the first one is d982n47v.slt). The other 6 folders have different names ending with .slt
Clicking the .slt for any of these on the left side of Windows Explorer yields the following list on the right side (with different file sizes based on what I have in each 'profile'; some lists are slightly different):

The (blue) I believe indicates system files that could be hidden.

If you need to see the individual files located in the above Folders (Cache,
Cache.Trash, chrome, Mail, News) I can type those also.

I hope the above is the full structure you were asking about?

Yes, I'm sorry for feeling so confused & probably using incorrect terms. Thank you too for your Help.

    Westside, Part 2

"You left out an important item in your path, above, i.e. that it should be:
    C/Documents & Settings/Owner/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/default/blahblah.slt/ "

    Westside,
    After /Profiles/ there is no "default/" before "blahblah.slt/ ".
If I click the + sign to expand "Profiles" I then have a choice of what I've been calling my 7 profiles (that correspond also to the names/choices I see after clicking the Netscape desktop icon that opens the Profile Manager for me to select 1 of the 7 choices & then be connected to the web on 1 of those choices).

There has never been a subfolder under Profiles/ called "default ". Not that I think I'd even want a default? When I click the Netscape desktop icon I want the Profile Manager to appear like it always has & does so I can make a choice. Each 'account' or 'profile' contains unique preferences & bookmarks & history etc that I use for different purposes. I'm also allowed 7 email accounts/usernames with my Comcast ISP. Each of these listings in Profile Manager corresponds to one of those Comcast accounts.

If this helps explain it better:
I started with the @Home cable ISP that then became ATT Broadband & now is Comcast. When @Home was first installed, it included not Netscape 4.6, but a proprietary @Home Netscape 4.61 with built in @Home links. The setup included creating the email addresses & using those email usernames as the 'profile' names in Netscape Profile Manager.

One more point on terminology that is still confusing. I call them 'Profiles' because as I said in my last & other posts that they are contained directly under the Mozilla subfolder called "Profiles" (and there is no default).

    Marklet,

Do you also have 7 unique Mail accounts with your 7 Profiles? If so, are you aware that in Netscape 7 you can have unlimited Mail Accounts, and only one Profile is needed?

You can't open 7.1 and 7.2 at the same time, and to reieterate, they are the same Program and are based on the same code. It is impossible to have them running simultaneously.

At the risk of repeating, you will have corruption sharing your Profiles.

Correct, Netscape looks for a Profile in the default location during the install. It sees the 7 Profiles of Netscape 7.1 and therefore uses them, because you didn't create new Profiles for Netscape 7.2. At the last stage of the install the Profile Manager opens and it is at this point the user creates the new Profile(s).

It was a quote Marklet, and obviously the "Mozilla" does not apply to you.

You can share them because they are part of the Profile, and not Program files. The Profile will look at the location the user designates for the Bookmarks, Mail, or Cache location. This can be done in either about:config, or prefs.js.

Because you did not create new Profiles for Netscape 7.2.

Yes I understand perfectly what you have said, and hopefully I have explained in such a way that you will no longer be confused.

Even though you will no longer be sharing Profiles, I would strongly advise creating new Profiles, as you have been sharing a Profile between the two Versions, and you may already have corruption.

    You're quite welcome.

"Do you also have 7 unique Mail accounts with your 7 Profiles? If so, are you aware that in Netscape 7 you can have unlimited Mail Accounts, and only one Profile is needed "?
Yes, I have 7 unique Mail accounts because it was originally created that way in Netscape 4.61, but I never installed the mail part of 7.1 or 7.2; when I first installed 7.1, I kept using 4.61 for mail. Then I started using Bloomba for mail. So currently the uniqueness of each of the 7 profiles/accounts/names(?) in NS 7.2 is in their bookmarks, history, & preferences.

"At the risk of repeating, you will have corruption sharing your Profiles ".
Okay, got it. Wish this was clear before I installed 7.2 while keeping 7.1 too.
Since installing 7.2, I believe I only opened 7.1 once just to see if it looked the same as before & wasn't changed by 7.2; probably stupid, okay.
So now I'm ready to uninstall 7.1; I want to keep my current 7 profiles/accounts that 7.2 is using right now. What exactly do I need to do?
Are you saying that after I will uninstall 7.1 that I need to create 7 new profiles/names in the Profile Manager & point each one to the corresponding existing profile? So if 1 of the 7 profiles is called lets say 'WORK', do I need to create a profile named 'WORKB' & point it to 'WORK' location in Windows Explorer Documents & Settings area? Do I then need to clean down the Profile Manager by removing the 7 originals?

"Yes I understand perfectly what you have said, and hopefully I have explained in such a way that you will no longer be confused ".
Thanks for your patience. Thanks for your answers. What I understand now is I did something wrong (though nothing seemed to warn me in advance that it was wrong). I won't say I'm confused at this point. Instead per above questions I just want to be sure I fix everything correctly & don't lose my 7 unique sets of preferences, bookmarks, history etc.

    Marklet,

I'm only making suggestions, dear. You can do whatever you wish as far as creating the new Profiles.

To uninstall Netscape 7.1 follow the instructions in my October 28, 2004, 18:38 post: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showpost.php?p=195446&postcount=4

If you have a backup of your Profiles folder you will lose nothing. Another tip, and if I had known that you weren't an intermediate-advanced user of Netscape, I would have said to always read the Release Notes before installing, as there is a wealth of information in those notes, including installing/uninstalling and Profile information.

    Please?

Forums are good but of course are a limited form of communication. If in any way you thought I was arguing or disagreeing, I was not. And I do think my general skills including Netscape are intermediate in a general sense compared to most of the population; that doesn't mean I'm an Expert & certainly doesn't mean that I don't want to learn more.

"To uninstall Netscape 7.2 follow the instructions in my... "
Why? I said I was ready to go with 7.2 & uninstall 7.1 & I asked specific questions in my last post that I don't seem to see answers to? I've accepted everything you said including that the status quo will create corruption and I asked exactly what do I do now to run strictly with 7.2 while saving my 7 distinct sets of Bookmarks, History, & Preferences.

What I asked in my last post was:
"So now I'm ready to uninstall 7.1; I want to keep my current 7 profiles/accounts that 7.2 is using right now. What exactly do I need to do?
Are you saying that after I will uninstall 7.1 that I need to create 7 new profiles/names in the Profile Manager & point each one to the corresponding existing profile? Do I then need to clean down the Profile Manager by removing the 7 originals?

I appreciate your time & replies & would very much appreciate specific answers to above paragraph so I don't do something stupid again.

BTW, I have more data on the Zone Alarm Pro problem. The log shows that these are the 4 Netscape components that keep reasking for Server rights most times I open the browser & sometimes while I'm surfing. First is the annoyance of clicking Deny because no browser should need Server rights (only Access rights). Then when I Deny, sometimes it doesn't connect to the internet or stops connecting. ZAP is working fine with no other problems & this only started after installing Netscape 7.2; the files are:
    nspr4.dll
    plc4.dll
    plds4.dll
    TYPEAHEADFIND.dll
I tried totally removing Netscape permissions from ZA Pro to force it to ask again from the beginning. This didn't help. It adds to the frustration & I'd really appreciate Help with it beyond saying it's a ZAP not Netscape problem. Why do you (if you still do) determine it's a ZAP problem when other than this ZAP is functioning fine with every other program (I have many) including IE?

I apologize for any occasion that I may not have expressed myself clearly. I am very appreciative of all Help. Thank you kindly.

    Marklet,

We don't have "stupid" on this Forum, only "learning mode ". I believe you took what I was saying the wrong way. I wasn't being condescending, and of course, I'm always glad to help in any way that I can. Here are the answers to the questions above.

You need to uninstall Netscape 7.1 using Add/Remove

Delete the Netscape 7.1 Programs folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape

Delete the 1.4f_2003062408 folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4f_2003062408

    REBOOT YOUR PC

    Now install Netscape 7.2
    ---

You can still handle what you want to do with one Profile. In fact, I would recommend installing Mozilla 1.7.3, on which the Netscape 7.2 code is based. You can elect to opt out of Mail & Newsgroups, as you are using another Mail Program. You will see no difference in the two browsers, as they are the same. In fact Netscape is Mozilla.

You can use any bookmarks.html file you wish by clicking on:
Bookmarks | Bookmark Manager | Tools | Open Bookmarks File
Select the location for bookmark2.html, or however you wish to name the files for selection.

So this is what you can do:
Leave the bookmarks.html, file in your Profile #1
Create a folder on the HD for for the bookmark file in Profile #2
    Name the folder, e.g., C:\Bookmarks #2
Rename the bookmarks.html file in Profile #2: bookmark2.html

Do the same for the other five Profiles, i.e., bookmark3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, and place them in like folders: C:\Bookmarks #3, #4, etc.

When you open Mozilla, and let's say you want to use the bookmarks from Profile #2, then you will do this:
Click on Bookmarks | Bookmark Manager | Tools | Open Bookmarks File
Select the location for bookmark2.html, which would be C:\Bookmarks #2.
This Bookmark file will be loaded, and will remain until you change Bookmarks folder again.
This would be so much less work than creating 7 new Profiles.

However, if you still elect to use 7 different Profiles, then yes, I would recommend 7 new Profiles. As for the history.dat file, it is not recommended to copy this file from one Profile to another. In fact it's a good idea to delete that file often, and not let it grow. You definitely should not copy the prefs.js file to a new Profile. You want the new Profile to create its own prefs.js file. It only takes a minute to run through and replace your settings. If you have added any scripts to the prefs.js file in the OLD Profile, you can always copy them to the NEW prefs.js file.

Now, if you would rather create the 7 new Profiles and instead install Netscape 7.2 then use this guideline, which lists files to be copied, and files which should not be copied to the NEW Profile:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/NS7newprofile.html

Copy the recommended files from the OLD Profile #1 to the NEW Profile #1, etc.
Do not point the NEW Profile to anything in the OLD Profile.

Now, on the ZoneAlarm problem. I don't use ZoneAlarm Pro, so I'm unfamiliar with the settings. I can only guess what the settings are. Have you checked on the Zone Alarm site, or Help File for Troubleshooting. I said it was a ZoneAlarm problem because ZA is the program which doesn't remember the setting you used. So it asks permission each time whether or not to allow server settings for Netscape. On the free ZoneAlarm, there is a setting when the Program asks for permission to allow or not allow, which says "Remember this setting ". Do you have that setting in the Pro Version? If so that is the setting to use when you tell ZA to allow or deny access to the Internet. Once you have checked "Remember this setting ", ZA should not ask again. Hence my suggestion that it was a ZA problem.

I hope that I have answered the correct questions, and my answers are specific enough. If not, then ask away, that's why we're here.

    Ramona

    EDIT:

I did have one question. When you listed these files:
    nspr4.dll
    plc4.dll
    plds4.dll
    TYPEAHEADFIND.dll

Are you getting errors in these files? I wasn't clear on that issue.

Also, there is a ZA Pro PDF User's Guide located here:
    http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/media/pdf/zaclient51_user_manual.pdf

Start at Page 79 for Program settings, etc.

    Thanks!

    Hello again Ramona,

"You need to uninstall Netscape 7.1 using Add/Remove "...Delete the Netscape 7.1 Programs folder" located here...Delete the 1.4f_2003062408 folder... REBOOT YOUR PC "
    Done.

    "Now install Netscape 7.2 ".
Now I'm confused as 7.2 was already installed (that's what you said would cause me a conflict sharing profiles with 7.1). Are you telling me to uninstall & reinstall 7.2, or is my current 7.2 okay?

"You can still handle what you want to do with one Profile ".
Why would I want just 1 Profile? My bookmarks, history, preferences, PrefBar, & Netscape Toolbar settings etc are different in each profile.

"Leave the bookmarks.html, file in your Profile #1
Create a folder on the HD for for the bookmark file in Profile #2
    Name the folder, e.g., C:\Bookmarks #2
Rename the bookmarks.html file in Profile #2: bookmark2.html
....This would be so much less work than creating 7 new Profiles ".
I understand your point. From my perspective though it's easier 1)to do the work once & have it there, & 2)your system may address Bookmarks, but not the other factors I've listed that I also have & want as separate/different in each profile.

"As for the history.dat file, it is not recommended to copy this file from one Profile to another. In fact it's a good idea to delete that file often, and not let it grow. "
In some profiles, I clear the History each time I exit the browser, but in other profiles I want to know what links I already visited/read, so I have the preference set to keep History for 90 days. Is that wrong? I'll 'sheepishly' say that it was never a problem.

"If you have added any scripts to the prefs.js file in the OLD Profile, you can always copy them to the NEW prefs.js file ".
Yes, over time I have, but I have no idea today/now what those changes were. How might I identify them?

Okay, so I'll lose History & Preferences. You list files to copy, & files not to copy. I didn't see on your list if these can/can't should/shouldn't be copied:
    verisign.na2
    secmod.db
    prefbar.rdf
    pab.na2
    netscapetoolbar.rdf
    netcenter.na2
    mimetypes.rdf
    key3.db
Re the chrome folder, you wrote not to copy chrome.rdf; can I copy:
    bugmenot.jar
    bugmenotservers.xml
    prefbar.jar
Re the .slt folder: there are several files with #s that end with suffix .s and suffix.w; in some profiles they're primarily hidden files / in other profiles they're not primarily hidden files; after the new password file is created, do all of these get copied to the new profile?

As to the names of the Profiles:
Can I change the current profile names by adding a letter, & then name the new profiles with the original old profile names? I'm guessing the answer is yes, but I'll ask to be sure.

"I did have one question. When you listed these files:
    nspr4.dll
    plc4.dll
    plds4.dll
    TYPEAHEADFIND.dll
Are you getting errors in these files? I wasn't clear on that issue ".

No, I'm not getting errors on them. When ZAP pops up many times when I start NS & tells me that NS wants to act as a Server, I can look deeper into the details & see if it's say the main netscape.exe or 1 or more other things. The 4 above dll files are what specifically each want to act as a Server. ZAP offers to remember your decision on Programs. On Components, it remembers the ones you approve except for when it sees it as a changed Component. Some 'pesky' dll files with problems such as a dll from Trojan Hunter that prevents tampering is always seen as changed; only solution is to turn off the anti tampering on that by adding a .old suffix to the dll or approve its Access each time (that dll doesn't access the web, but does access TCP). I don't see why that should happen with Netscape & these 4 dll files. Are these 4 needed for what; can I .old suffix them without creating any problem?

Thank you very much for all your Help. I also enjoy helping people. Used to do that in ZA Forum, but the Forum changed & I no longer participate there.
