For some reason when Windows starts on my wife's new PC I get the following error message:

"Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 is required to continue. This software is available from Microsoft ".

.NET framework version 3.5 appears to be already installed on this computer under installed programs so why is it prompting version 2.0?

Second if I click on the link provided in the error message, it doesn't really take me anywhere, other than Microsoft's website. Not to the proper download anyway.

So my wife finds version 2.0 but it won't install. I explained that if version 3.5 is already installed on the computer it superseds version 2.0 and that is why version 2.0 won't install.

Then there is another program she tried which she says needs to be installed first. I think it was DOTFIX.exe. It saying that this program cannot install on a 64 bit operating system.

We are not sure why this error message is even occuring. It didn't happen when we first got the computer. I think something has been installed on this computer that is prompting for .NET Framework version 2.0.

Further more: after installing NetFx20SP1_x64 I get the following error in the log:

[01/12/10,23:03:16] VS Scenario: [2] CSupportedPlatformCheck failed : You must use "Turn Windows features on or off" in the Control Panel to install or configure Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP1.

Any ideas as to what is going on? Thanks.

Windows 7, as with it's predecessors, requires installs of .NET 1, 2 & 3. Each serves a separate purpose and may be a specific requirement of a particular program.

Paste the following path into the Address Bar of Windows Explorer ....

    %systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework

    You should have installed v1, 1.1, 2, 3 & 3.5 - Screenshot

Drop down to the nest folder in the LH pane - Framework64

    You should have installed v2, 3 & 3.5 - Screenshot

You will see from the Created file dates (14/07/0) that they are the original Win 7 files.

See this MSDN thread for a possible solution ....

Windows 7 message at start up:microsoft.net framework version 2.0 is required to continue

Everything listed you posted in the attachments is installed. I also tried reparing network framework 2.0 SDK in the control panel to no avail.

I did a Google search and even though this is not a Dell computer, one website mentioned something about the printer causing this error message.

She's using a Lexmark X3650 printer and with her previous computer running Vista, it didn't like this particular printer or perhaps the software. The software or drivers may have been written for XP. I can't seem to find the installation disk at the moment.

I could uninstall the printer and software and it seemed to fix the problem for awhile but after installing it again, the computer eventually just crashed beyond repair. We are not sure if the hard drive died or it just crashed, just after 6 months of use.

It finally came back from the manufacturer the other day but we haven't picked it up from the repair shop yet to find out what happened to it.

OK. I figured out that it has something to do with the software that came with this printer. If I click on the Lexmark studios icon on the desktop, I get the same error message as when Windows starts, because it automatically tries to start this program.

Now that I have figured out the issue is with the printer, I'm trying to find a solution. I'm going to install the Windows 7 drivers from Lexmark's website and see what happens.

We ended up taking the computer back and getting another one. My wife said it was defective because it was doing crazy things like programs that originally worked now didn't, printer originally worked but then popping up the error message pertaining to Net Framework 2.0, screen going black and having to manually turn the computer off and on again. So either the motherboard was bad or Windows 7 is no better than Vista.
