I have a Amptron 3726(M)T motherboard with a USB 1.0 riser (I believe that is what it is called). it has two ports with a PS/2 mouse connector.

I want to find a place to buy a USB 2.0 riser to replace the one I have. I would just buy a USB 2.0 PCI Card but don't have an open PCI Slot to put it in.

    Any suggestions????

    Thanks

    Mitch

PCI is probably the only option to get USB 2.0 on that motherboard since it does not natively have support for USB 2.0. It has 3 PCI slots. What are you using presently in those slots?

Thanks for the response. I was afraid you would say that.

first PCI slot has my video card
    second has sound card
    third has the ethernet card.

The motherboard has onboard sound but I bought it used and it didn't have the daughter board for the onboard sound and I couldn't find one.

I suppose I may just have to deal with what I have until I can afford to upgrade to a newer system.

One possible solution is to pull the ethernet card, install a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI card and then buy a USB to ethernet converter that can be plugged into one of the USB ports. Should handle what you are looking to accomplish for less than $30.

    ;)

The D-Link model seems to have the best compatibility out of this lot.

All these adapters are not without problems for some people, though. There's just no predicting how you will fare, but it's certainly worth a try. Keep in mind that you are using a very old motherboard and its USB compatibility may be an issue with modern USB devices (I'm not talking about USB 1.1 vs 2.0).

Scrap the pci video card and use the agp port, plus you'll get better performance from agp than with pci video anyway. You can get a 256 MB agp card today for 50 bucks or less on sale.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your posts. I've been preoccupied the past several days.

I think I am going to try one of the ethernet adapters.

    TonyT:

I would love to get rid of the PCI Video card and use the AGP, unfortunately, the case doesn't quite match the motherboard: the agp slot sits above the last available opening. I could clear two PCI slots if I bought the right size case and found a daughter card for the onboard sound - which is what I would like to do.

Of course, my best bet would be to buy a newer computer or a barebones kit but money to too tight for that right now. Have to live with what I've got and make it work as best I can.

Will keep you all updated on my progress.

Thanks again for the advice and help.

    Understood.
However, more ventilation in a case is always a good thing that could be added w/ a decent pair if snips. (cut a hole for the agp connector!) Who cares what the back of the box looks like anyway!

by golly I never thought about that, and it just might work. I'm going to give that some serious thought.

But in the mean time, bought a four port USB PCI Card and am now waiting on my USB to Ethernet adpter to arrive. Once installed, my printer, flash drive, and webcam ought to pick up a little speed.

    Thanks again,

Will keep you up to date
