Well Folks, my story isn't all that pretty. Called Dell today as i said I would, they did agreed to look at the missing functions and in fact spent 5 hours trying to repair my OS. It seems my OS is not recogonizing that there are files missing and therefore cannot be repaired. There are more files missing than I was aware of. The plan is to Ghost my machine and clean my drive and reinstall XP. What are your thoughts on this plan? Dell will asisst with all of this when I make a decision. I am not sure I can make an informed decision on this without a second opinion.
    Please give me your opinion.

Will follow up with the outcome. Do you know of any online courses I could take to increase my computer technical knowledge?

Your best school is on boards like this one, and other computer boards.

I must admit I have learned a whole lot on this board, I belong to other boards but this is my favorite. I don't like the feeling of being so illilterate and asking dumb questions. I also am embarresses being on here all the time with so many issues but that is the only way I can learn.

There is nothing to be embarrassed of. All of us had to start somehow, somewhere.
I never got any formal computer education, and I don't think, I'm alone around here :)
It simply takes time, and every day brings you new batch of knowledge...

Thanks Broni, I'll try to keep that in mind. I did not grow in the computer generation so it's a little more difficult for me.

No worries. I bought mu first computer, very "powerful" Commodore 128, at the age of 34.
That was the very first time, when I saw a computer in real.

PCS weren't even available when I was 34 so I'm getting a much later start and my friends think I have lost my mind. Our first one was TRS 80, never could use that thing, kept losing my data, hated computers.

As long, as you like computers, tell them to get lost :)

    That's probably very good idea.
You'll get more attention, and I'm not familiar with Ghost.
Make sure to post a link to this thread, so you don't have to explain everything twice.

I think I'm in real trouble. I could get no help with Norton Ghost, I was referred to another site from this site but could not type the code to match so could not get in to register. I went out own, I backed up computer using Ghost to external hard drive, this I found is not correct. There is no way to redo as XP has already been reinstalled. Now I have the contents on an external drive and don't knpw how to retrieve them. I was hoping to have an image as a backup, now I don't know what I have. I did try to copy to C drive and it will copy for a while and there is a message about a bad file and it stops. Can you think of anything I can do?

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with Ghost, as I said before, so I have no idea how to get your data from the back up.
    I'm sorry...

Thank you Broni for responding. I think I'm just at wits end and just needed to vent. I don't where I'm going to go for help. My Daughter used the program for years and she bought this for me but she doesn't help me with my computer. I briefly mentioned it yesterday and that's when I found I had not backed up correctly, she doesn't like windows so she won't help us who have Windows.
Somewhere I should be able to find some help, if you think of a place, please let me know. I was hoping Pete would see this, he might could help.
You have done your share to help me out .

    Broni,

Need to tie up this loose end. Reinstalled OS, everything works fine, bad news lost all data. Ghost back up diidn't work, called a pro to try to recover data, he has had it running for 4 days and no data recoverable. I think this issue is resolved.
