Hello, recently I havent opened my computer for 3 weeks (before I left my sound card was working), and now my sound card appears to be broken.
Normally it says "SB! Live wave device" or something towards that on skype when allocating the default microphone (like Screaming Bee audio driver or Virtual Audio Cable). Ive tried pretty much everything, updated windows, tried to find it on device manager, nothing... Anyone know if its broken or can it be fixed? I tried unplugging it and plugging it back.

Hi ravenheim, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

So the sound card isn't recognized in Windows? Is the sound card running in a PCI slot on the motherboard? If so then see if plugging it into a different PCI slot will allow it to work. Check to make sure that there is no dust or dirt on the mothernoard by the PCI slots as particles can affect the connection of add-in cards.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Im not sure if its a PCI as my video card is AGP (as far as i know, because its VERY old). There are some kind of steel plates blocking from inserting on other slot. I think I could remove them and place it on that. And my video card and sound card have pretty much dust on them.

Did you remove any dust that you found in the case before plugging the sound card into a different PCI slot? Also try cleaning the contacts of the sound card with a clean eraser to rule out a faulty connection.

You could try installing the sound card into another computer and seeing if that will get the sound card working. Failing that though I would probably conclude that your sound card is dead.

I don't have another computer. But how did it break when nobody was using my computer?

Sometimes hardware parts can just wear out over time with continual use. Especially if the component is many years old.

Electronic components don't last forever but simple things such as cleaning out your computer case of dust and dirt and keeping your computer in a well ventilated area will help prolong the life of the components.

I believe it's over 7 years old and my computer is on about 10+ hours a day and I rarely clean it. But thanks for the help, looks like I got to buy another sound card..

Yeah with the age of that system it wouldn't surprise me that one of your components eventually failed. If you need help with buying a replacement sound card feel free to let me know.
