hi everyone. im a completely new, green and fresh member and i signed up cuz i need some assistance and i look for your kindness.

My computer started to stutter recently (2 days ago. even less).

it seems like it starting to happen if im running a game and it doesnt seem to trigger if im doing something more mundane as surfing the web.

my computer is having tiny freezes - my mouse freezes, the sound freezes (loops?) and the application (game) freezes for 0.3 of a second (approximatly. i didnt really time it :p ). the spaces between the freezes is about a second. they are really short but really really frequent.
if i leave the game im playin than all the freezing is carried over to the rest of my work time on the computer until i reboot.

if i reboot and dont load a game then i dont get the freezes at all.

    ************

    a few notes -
my specs - windows XP sP3
Q6600 OCed to about 2.6ghz (i have been using the OC for 4 months now. no stuttering until 2 days ago).
    2GBs ram
Radeon 4870 512mb (updated drivers but had stutterings in the older drivers too)

    another note -
as i said i OCed the CPU a tad. not much at all. i didnt have any issues with it.

i have quit a lot of programs in my start up. not sure how to type all of them here. most of these are assential to me (razor keyboard, logitec mouse, tablet, spybot tea timer, ATI CCC etc) and some i dont know what they do (adobe gamma loader? ***?).

ummm.... can't think of anything else to state.
also it seems like sometimes my computer is slower than i expect it to be. i guess that i maybe loaded it with too much programs but cheking the running processes and performances in the task manager - it doesnt look like my computer is working that hard.

my temperatures (using coreTemp to check them out) are about 54-60 Celsius. nothing special...

so, what do u say?... how can i stop the stutterings?
how can generally speed up the computer?

thanks for anyone who can help or at least make me feel like he cares by saying "poor boy... there there.... poor boy "...

Hi topeira. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Try following these steps to make your computer run faster:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use.
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger and click ok when you are done.
    3. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html.
    5. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files. Once you select those checkboxes click the more options tab and under System Restore click the cleanup button and hit yes when it asks you if you want to delete all but the most recent restore point. Once you do that, click ok and allow disk cleanup to finish cleaning up your system.
    6. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag from here.
    7. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    8. Click Start< Run type in cmd and press enter. In the command prompt window that opens type cd\ followed by enter. Next type the following command and press enter, chkdsk /r. A message will appear saying that check disk cannot run while the volume is in use. Type Y and hit enter. After thats done reboot the computer to allow check disk to run.
    9. Lastly, please fill out your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Let me know if your computer is running any faster after performing the above steps. :)

    hello buddy.

thanks a lot for giving these pointers.
i already made some overhaul steps myself (cleaning some of the startup stuff, running check disk, defragging and checking for maleware) and i also followed your advices on the rest of the stuff i didnt know about or thought about.

the end result is a faster smoother experience with my machine and im a happy puppy.

for now i dont think my rig needs more TLC so i wont post specific specs and the rest.

thank u so much for the advices :) u helped a lot.
