could you please seperate the descriptions and include where they are located, and do you infact have the items you mentioned installed

    spools.exe

    smsc.exe

    msne.exe

    ========
The first two sound lagitamate but must be very rare, I only see msne.exe mentioned once and it was with smsc.exe, and goabot was mentioned
several folks said it sounds like the spybotworm to.

vareints of both can and do prevent anti virus programs from detecting them

So How has your scan worked out ? have you yet been able to get the onlines to work ?

copy and past this into IE's addressbar
    javascript:navigator.userAgent
    Hit enter or go
and copy paste that back here for us please

    "msne.exe" looks like "W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen" worm.
You may want to go HERE, and check registry entries mentioned at that site. You may also run removal tool from the above site. It won't hurt anything.

You will need to show hidden files and folders. Right click the desktop and choose new>folder. Name it HJT. Cut and paste HijackThis.exe from C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip to that folder.

I recommend you go to add/remove programs and uninstall, if present, Wild Tangent.

Scan again and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    All R1's and R0's.
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us4.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-us4.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us4.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us4.hpwis.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://us4.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us4.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-us4.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us4.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us4.hpwis.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://srch-us4.hpwis.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://srch-us4.hpwis.com/
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DDCM] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\DDC\DDCManager\DDCMan.exe" -Background
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DDCActiveMenu] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\DDC\ActiveMenu\DDCActiveMenu.exe" -boot
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

    Optional

O9 - Extra button: MktBrowser (HKLM)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MarketBrowser (HKLM)

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart.

Now in safe mode, open C:\Program Files and delete the folder Wild Tangent.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open My Computer and right click Local Disk C:, then choose disk cleanup. Check all except compress old files and OK.
Also recommend you uninstall Windows Messenger. See this thread for more.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Back in Windows, visit Windows Update. Accept all critical updates.
Reboot and go back to Windows Update until there are no more criticals offered.
Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

Information below about this process, taken from answersthatwork.com. C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe

NVIDIA Driver Helper Service which gets installed under Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003 by the NVIDIA drivers for some of their graphics cards (or graphics cards based on an NVIDIA chipset). We do not at this stage know what this process does except consume memory ! And we also have no idea as to what a “Driver Helper Service†is supposed to do !!

    Recommendation :
This service is often responsible for various glitches, from significant shutdown delays to excessive memory usage. Disabling it, however, does not result in our experience in any ill-effect as regards the proper operation of your NVIDIA or NVIDIA chipset graphics card, so we recommend that you definitely set the Startup Mode of this service to Disabled. You can Do this by going to start>run, type services.msc, hit enter. Locate the service in the list and right click>properties.

Dave - thanks for that. I had that service running and had never thought to look past the fact that it was legit and from my video maker.

Now stopped and disabled since I was having occasional problems like those mentioned.

You stay more on top of this sort of thing than I do so if you see any changes to this recommendation, please post them.

Well, almost. You still need to visit Windows Update.

Close all windows and fix these with HJT.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
    O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Reboot. Do the updates. Reboot when done. As noted before, you may need more than one visit.

Download CWShredder from my signature. Open and with all other windows closed, click fix. Reboot.

Then paste the following command into the address window and hit enter.

    javascript:navigator.userAgent

Copy and paste the resulting window here with a new log, along with any comments.

Well, things look good at this point. How long do you expect to wait on the update CD? There are alot of critical updates needed yet, quite a few in SP1. I think you would be best off to just start the download and walk away for a while. Better to get it now than to keep surfing without it.

If your Winsock was broken, you never would get a page. Are you still getting blank on occasion?

Go into the registry and verify the windows key is present at the following location. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows

I know, sounds like a strange request but there are some new nasties doing funny things. Just need to be sure.

Also with the SP1 it takes about 6 hours to load and will disconect after about 2 hours.. I will try agine before I go to bed tonight just to see..

Evey thing seems fine now.. One last ? Can you recomend a good Virus Scanner and fire wall.. does not matter if it is free or not.. The one I had was V-com and they used Trend micro and Trend is upgrading there DAT Files to diffrent numbering system that V-Com does not suport.. :(
