A dialog box appears on my desktop at boot up and sometimes again when opening a program to run with the title 'msmsgs.exe - Application Error' and contains the following text..

The instruction at "ox5ff3d322" referenced memory at "Ox8d30d49b ". The memory could not be "read ".

Click on OK to terminate the program

Can anyone help me clear this problem?

    I would try two things:
    1. Uninstall & reinstall Windows Messenger
    2. Check for Malware

Arie, Your suggestion did not work. Windows Messenger turned off OK but no Malware detected by my CA Internet Security Plus.

Error message still appearing (and reappearing again shortly after being cancelled by clicking on OK.

Uninstall CA, check if the problem still exist.

Reinstall CA, did the problem return?

Those software(s) usually don't do a good job of detecting Malware. I suggest you post the required logs to our Malware forum to make sure you are free of Malware.

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.
