    I HEAR YOU

    Thanks Alice.

I've read your full notes and will keep a log the next time but it hasn't arrived as yet.

I'm not too well at the moment so will let you know when I get back to it. Actually, I want to reinstall Norton 2002 which is very IE 5.5 dependent but the Symantec folks have sent me a new CD supposedly with patches so perhaps I'll just try it as is. Couldn't install 2002 to save my soul but 2001 installed w/o a hitch.

    And there's Quick Tax and...

    Cheers

    Ron

I assumed that you did a selective startup and unchecked everything in msconfig then rebooted when you said you did a `clean boot' prior to your IE5 install but I thought I'd mention, seeing that you have NortoonAV installed, that earlier versions had problems with windows hanging on a reboot if you only "ended task" or disabled Norton Autoprotect before the installation. This issue may have been fixed in NAV2001, I don't know, but it did exist in earlier versions of NAV. FWIW this is from my notes at http://home.att.net/~wymette/programs/NortonAv.txt and is quoted from Symantec support:
In any case, I hope you get the issue resolved. If you think that Norton AV may be involved then I would contact their technical support

    NORTON

    Hi Alice

Re `Clean Boot', the answer is yes: AEBat/CFSys/WIni/SIni and all of the Start Up Group. I disconnected from cable and shut down Zone Alarm, too, from within its Config options [otherwise ZA will load regardless of Start Up]. Only thing running was Windows and Explorer, not even Systray.

I had no trouble installing Norton AV 2000 or 2001, just 2002. And yes, I went around the horn with Norton with even three tech persons involved and I still have a Job Order # posted. This is why they gave up and sent me two new CDs, last supposedly with special patches. The Script errors I was getting were `new' to them. They were aware of some but not mine.

In ways, I'm kicking myself for not reformatting and starting afresh but one never learns anything that way.

Incidentally, I downloaded a software program from Australia to remove all of IE and Outlook from one's System and Registry and supposedly, one then can install only what one wishes. Haven't tried it. I'll only do so as a last resort and if it bombs, then it's reformat and install, install, install.

I really don't want to go to ME or XT or whatever the latest is. For the latter, my cousin who is a computer repair man, had to buy a new scanner as his old one would not run.

I'll be back...when I'm up to taking on IE and Windows et al. Will close the loop, later if not sooner.
