That doesn't make any sense to me, but I guess anything can happen in the world of computing. It sounds like your .pst file is corrupted.

My guess is that he uncovered the folder pane on the far left side exposing the contacts folder, but anyway, I'm sure glad you're back in business again. ;)

Look on the right side at the top-most post in this thread, and you will see a drop-down box called Thread Tools. Click on it, and you will see a "Mark This Thread As Solved" selection. Click on that and you're done.

    EDIT:
Wait a minute. My bad, I thought you started this thread, Johnny, but I see it was started by someone else (Ivr181). You can't mark someone else's thread as resolved.

You are not the starter of this thread, and because of that can not mark it resolved. The thread starter is simply the one who posted the first post.

Irv, at support.microsoft.com/kb/272227, I down loaded 3 pages (How to repair your Outlook personal folder file (.pst). I was not home, but my wife said he took this and played with it for about an Hr. Hope this helps. best wishes for good luck. Johnny

P.S. I saw where LOSER had already made this suggestion. Apparently it worked for my(Tech), 17 year old boy.

Getting back to the original thread message, Ivr, there is another way to get access to your contacts (at least some of them). Open your emails one at a time, and you will see the To & From address in the top left corner of the message. You can copy this information easy by right-clicking on an address and selecting "Add to Outlook Contacts" from the context menu.

I know it may sound painstaking, but it is better than having no contacts at all. I have done this few times, myself, if I needed an address not found in my contacts folder.

    Windows explorer crashed
thus the only choice I seem to have was to mount the drive as a secondary drive and retrieve the pst files. This I did, and on another computer, installed MS Outlook and placed the pst files in the correct place but all I got was some old emails (and downloaded new ones) but no contact list or additional folders from original set up. Perhaps your 17yr old boy "technician" had normal windows access to repair your problem?
    Thanks for your input.

Thanks - yes I can do that for the emails I have. Unfortunately it is the other missing ones I want :(

I live in hope. But the lesson to be learned is to back up your contacts list regularly. Not done by this "silly" elderly person.

I know it hurts to lose important data, but I'm sure everyone on this forum has lost vital information along the way (god knows, I have).

I make it a habit to back up (or export) information like

    • .pst files
    • address book files in the form of csv format
    • Roboform data (password files)
    • Microsoft Money data (personal finance)
    • photos & videos
    • music
    • important documents

.Mr. Martin, I did not start this thread. i was in the windows 7 forum I asked about another problem and just mentioned that I had lost my Email contacts. The problem I ask about was resolved. I beleive I checked it resolved but I possibly did not log out of that forum. Someone picked up on the lost Email contacts and has worked it to death. I got th problem solved by downloading and printing some info. that one of your tech's suggested. the local guy took this info and got my contacts back. I was not home and don' know he did it.
Mr. Martin I hope you live to be a "silly" eldery person like me. Best wishes and may God bless

    Hi LVR181,

You dont need to have access to 'normal' windows to scan your pst file.

Copy your pst file in an external drive.
You can use any other 'working' laptop.. Go to scanpst.exe ... and browse to your pst in the external drive to repair.

    Good Luck

I will try that. I copied all pst files from "useless "{ system and they now also sit in a folder within my laptop.

Go to Microsoft Community forums and post your question in the Outlook forum. They have experts that deal with Outlook issues on a daily basis.

To get started, you'll need to click on Participate, and then click on Ask A Question (after you create an account of course).

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
