    registry entries

I don't want to belabor this point but this new computer never had Netscape on it, so any entry in the registry must come from Mozilla. If you have done the manual install, do a regedit and then search for "Mozilla" no quotes, and you will see the entries I am talking about.

    Hi Bob,

You certainly aren't belaboring the point. I was going on the premise that, as Mozilla does indicate in its documentation, there are no Registry entries when using the Zip install. I don't want to give incorrect information to members.

Because I have multiple versions of Netscape and Mozilla installed on my Dell, I decided to crank up the Aptiva. I removed all Netscape, and Mozilla programs. Removed all Registry entries, and all Program folders. Did a reboot and unzipped Mozilla 1.6 in a ....\Program Files\Mozilla 1.6 folder. I ran Mozilla, and used the Mail & Newsgroups component.

I closed Mozilla, and did a Registry "Find" for Mozilla, and mozilla.org. These are the only Registry Keys found:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Client\Mail
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Client\Mail
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Client\Mail\Mozilla
    HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Clients\Mail

All of which are the Mail Client. Are these the Registry entries you found?

The Mozilla executable install adds roughly 65-70 Registry entries.

NOTE: this was done using Windows 95b.

    Thanks!

    Registry Entries

    Hi Ramona,
Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. I did searches on every major key, Current User, Local Machine, Root, etc. and find many entries in every one. Many of the entries in Classes involve gifs, jpegs, html, mng, xbm, xhtml, etc.
Then there are entries related to Certificates of Authority, mapi, mapiproxy.dll. When I get to Local Machine there are entrries to Mozilla.exe, at least 10. In Root, there is a whole section on Mozilla. If you scroll down, it is in alphabetical order. I don't know how serious these entries are but Mozilla starts up so fast on my machine that I can't believe much time is spent going through the registry. Anyway, there are plenty of entries there and I would be interested in the location of the place where the Mozilla developers say there are no registry entries.

    Hi Bob,

I can just imagine the difference you are seeing in the startup of Mozilla. On my older PC which has a 166 Mhz processor, I can play 9 holes of golf while waiting for startup! ;)

The Mozilla Book from which I took the above reference can be downloaded here:
    Mozilla Book - 20031017

    See: Page 18
One of my friends did a manual install of Mozilla 1.6 on W2K, and he too found Registry entries. He reported most of the options in Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System were recorded in the registry, at least on Windows 2000.

If you want this straight from the developers, then you might want to post on the MozillaZine.
