They have a whole security suite, which is not free, and they also have free antivirus, ver. 8.

I know about the security suite. The free AV was news to me, and I could find no documentation, and nothing but negative reports at the download.com site. The average rating was one star out of fivem while v.7.5, which I have is five out five. Either, the users don't understand what's going on, or they are right. After looking around the AVG I did not see any free AVG v.8 listed, only a trial version. Since the procedure very clearly says that v.8 would uninstall 7.5, I don't want to take a chance. Not yet.
As I said, I did get the program downloaded, but did not attempt to install it, in view of all that.

Does it matter if AVG7.5 is not supported, if the third link says:
Free AVG7.5 was never supported in the real sense of the word. Now, if they are going to stop the updates, it is another story. I got the download, and there is plenty of time.

Ok, it is serious enough, but where does it say that 7.5 updates will not be available after May 31? I looke all over the AVG site, and I have not seen any mention of it.

Hmmm...good question. I swear, I read about it on couple of sites, but...maybe it's a rumor.

This is very amusing. The second link from download.com is mostly negative. They may notc be correct tbut with one exception the users said to keep using 7.5, or implied that. Thw mjorgeeks.com site has no pro or con, in the open, but the screenshot shows that 7.5 is being used.

As for AVG, I could find nothing to indicate that updates would not be available for 7.5, and 8.x was required.

A big thank you to all who have commented and helped me with my problem.
Before reading your latest replies advising me about AVG, I had already installed McAfee.I got 3 licences at a good price £25.00 or $50.00 to you guys.

I have installed it on all 3 of my pc's ,so far so good !

I am very pleased I can now use the ancestry site through mozilla.

I will see how I go with McAfee and if no good I can always fall back on AVG.
Question.. why is AGV free ,I always believe that nothing is for free in this world, how is it subsidized ?

    Regards
    Coalminer

    Coalminer,
free AVG does not have all features of the for pay AVG, and does not have any support, i.e. someone to complain to, if there are problem. I have free AVG for at least eight years, and have McAfee prior to that. For a while, I alternated disabling either one or other, until I became satisfied that it was a good product. Some freeware is an enticement to buy the for pay stuff, but it does not work with me. I have freeRIP, an excellent software which will rip CDs to almost any format. The limitation is that only five cuts at a time can be ripped. It is no great effort to adjust to that.
As for antivirus, my ISP provides the entire McAfee security suite for free, but so far I have been doing fine with my free software. The moment free is no longer free, I am gone.
