    Greetings To All,

Please bare with me as I am a new member. I am hoping that someone out there can give me some much needed advice on my computer issues. I am fairly good at computers but I am in no way an expert, so any information you are kind enough to give...please go into step by step detail so I don't waste anyones time by asking stupid questions. Any advice is very much appreciated so might I say thank you so much in advance. Anyways, here are my computer specs:

    System:
    Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 3

    Computer:
    Intel(R)
    Pentium (R) 4CPU 2.40 GHz
2.39 GHz 2.00 GB of Ram

    DVD/CD-ROM drives:
    JLMS XJ-HD 166S
    Pioneer DVD/RW DVR-112D

Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard

    Logitech USB Wheel Mouse

Now onto my problems. First thing that started going wrong is with my DVD/CD-Rom drives. Let me first start by saying that my computer is a used rebuild that I have been running and upgrading for the past 5-6 years. The JLMS drive is the original one I started with. The Pioneer is about 2-3 years old. I have used the heck out of both of these drives and just recently, they aren't working properly. I think the JLMS is shot...but the Pioneer has been starting to give me burning and reading issues. It seems very selective in what is wants to play and absolutely does not want to burn DVD's. It will burn CD's sometimes, but not DVD's. I recently updated the driver with no better results. Could there be any other issues that I am missing or is it safe to assume that it is shot as well?

My biggest problem that developed last night is with my mouse and keyboard. I was running a paid for karaoke MIRC program downloading karaoke zips when all of a sudden the MIRC window started acting strange by not letting me scroll without creating a grey cover window in the channel. So, needless to say...I shut it down quickly. Low and behold...after shutting down MIRC my mouse started freezing up. So, I opened my Easy Cleaner program and cleaned out all cache, mru, unnecessary, registry. Then ran %temp% deleted all. Opened Registry Cleaner, ran it and had it fix all problems. Then I ran disc cleanup and restarted my computer. I got back on and started working on some digital art. The mouse seemed to work fine for about 30 minutes then started freezing up again. So I shut down the program and got online to check Google for a fix to my problem. Well, now my keyboard wasn't working. So now really freaking out...I tried to restore my comp to an earlier date and in the process I realized that duh...I have a login password and my keyboard isn't working so I immediately (in the middle of restore) hit the power off button. Stupid I know and it really messed things up, but I was finally able to get into safe mode and successfully restore to get back up and running again and I also removed my log in password just incase my keyboard was still malfunctioning.
Finally, I ran my Avast Antivirus to do a full system scan. It found 2 MIRC files that were infected, so I quarantined them. After that I used Spybot search and destroy and searched to find about 13 tracker cookies. I tried to delete them, but it only seemed to remove 5 of the 13. After all of this mess I rebooted and restarted normally. Since then the keyboard seems to work better...it hasn't frozen yet (better not speak too soon right?) but the mouse is still acting funky at times. And now when my mouse freezes...periodically I will hear a ba-dink...like the sound you hear when you are unplugging a usb cable? After the ba-dink sound...the mouse will start working again. Also, now when I open a new tab it seems there is (what looks like) to be a Windows Update logo in the new tab box as soon as I open it. When I log into my yahoo email, the logo turns into a cn logo, and when I log out of my email I get an m logo. This seems quite odd to me as I have never noticed this before.
Sorry this is such a long post, but I felt that it would be best to go step by step hoping someone might see where the issue might have come from (MIRC?). As I said previously...any information or fixes would be ever so greatly appreciated. Does it sound like I have to totally wipe out my system and restore windows??? If I do that...will my mouse and keyboard work properly during and after the process??? Someone Please help...I am at a loss. Also, while reading posts on Google I read something about replacing the CMOS battery and reconfiguring BIOS??? I have never replaced this battery...could it be the problem??? If so, how the heck do I reconfig the BIOS? Thank you so much for reading and I hope to hear from someone soon.

    Many Blessings To All,

    Persephanie

P.S. Another freaky thing...before I system restored and immediately shut down the first time...I deleted all the zip files I had downloaded from MIRC into my recycle bin. When I finally got into safe mode...they were back in the folder I deleted them from and had to delete them again. Hmmmmmmm???

    Hi persephanie, Welcome to WindowsBBS.:)

I would suspect you have Malware/Virus problems so you may have to wait until one of the Moderators checks in. Cheers Neil.

It may not be a virus, let's look at the mouse first.

Is it a wired or wireless USB one? If wired their is a chance that the cable is damaged causing the mouse to become unplugged/reconnected.

Your keyboard freezing is less likely to be this issue (but it appears that this only happened once) so we'll come back to that.

Your optical drives are probably just showing signs of wear and tear, do you clean the lenses often?

Finally because Avast has found some malware I will direct you to the anti-malware board, just to be safe.

Please read this and post requested logs in the Malware and virus removal board.

    NOTES:
When posting the logs ensure word wrap is switched off (in notepad Uncheck Format->Word Wrap) failing to do this makes them difficult to read.

Be aware that only Malware analysts will advise and they are often busy. Your post will be taken on a first come first served basis but it may take a while before you receive a reply.

Include a link to this thread if you can.
