Turn it back on after rebooting back into Windows, before doing the updates.

    Almost done, but...

    Hi again

I've almost finished your instructions, but can't download RAV - see message:

"Download Section is closed. Existing RAV AntiVirus registered customers should address support@ravantivirus.com for downloading existing products.

Due to the acquisition of RAV's IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) by Microsoft Corp., GeCAD Software SRL is currently engaged in a strategic reorganization of its operations, which includes scaling down and discontinuation of its anti-virus related business. More details at:
    http://www.ravantivirus.com/pages/shownews.php?i=153 .

As part of this process please be informed that RAV AntiVirus online and direct sales ceased September 3rd, 2003. "

I also could not find msdirectx.sys on my computer - I know that AVG always notified me of an infected file called msdirectx.exe - did you mean this?

    Seem to be clean

    Hi again

Just done another MWAV scan and came out clean! The only two files that were noted werde the ones related to Pegasus that you pointed out to me before as being legid and safe. I'm so relieved.

Also done another Hyjackthis scan. Here is the protocol:

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
    Scan saved at 11:16:19 p.m., on 15/05/2005

I keep my fingers crossed and hope that everything is ok now. Thanks soooo much. Could never have done it without you.

On a similar matter: My firewall trial version (ZoneLab Pro) is running out tomorrow - any recommendations on alternatives or do you think ZoneLab is ok?
Also what about other protection - I'm using AVG as a virus scanner - any other suggestions/recommendations?
What other protective software should I have? I'm not keen to go through all of this again!

Again thanks so much for your help and patience!

Good news! :) You're most welcome, and I'm glad I could help.

I mentioned the MSDIRECTX.SYS file only because you noted at the beginning of this cleanup that you were prompted as infected by the same file, but located somewhere in Docs and Settings. ;)

I feel AVG is adequate protection, as is the Zone Alarm free version. ;)

To run the RAV scan, click the To continue without subscribing click here link on the first page, then allow the ActiveX component to be installed, wait for the definitions to load, then click Scan my PC.

I also recommend you fix this entry with HijackThis.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_01\bin\jusched.exe

Then go to control panel>Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Java Runtime environment. Reboot, then go to the Sun Java Website and update your JRE. Current is 1.4.2_08

Also recommend you download Spybot Version 1.3 from my signature, install and update. Allow it to load SD Helper. Open it up and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it (always recheck this setting after downloading updates). Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates regularly and watch for any protection being disabled. Then, still in Spybot, click tools button, then IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file.
Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

That will give you some added layers of protection against unwanted parasites.

    Virus free and protected!

Hi there. Thanks so much again for your help to clear this nasty virus from my computer. I'm clean and up-to-date with just about anything on my machine. This was long overdue.... ;)

Just one more question. I did not quite understand what you meant with the following (this is in SpywareBlaster):
"Then, still in Spybot, click tools button, then IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file." I clicked on Tools but wasn't sure what to do then... sorry

Other than that I am happy and relieved.
Have also recommended your forum to some other people ;) Thanks heaps!

I'm sorry for the delay in responding. I got a bit side-tracked.

Sorry, I know those instructions can be confusing. I wrote them that way because when you're inside of Spybot and click the SpywareBlaster link, an IE window opens to the SpywareBlaster download page. It can be downloaded, installed, updated and closed, yet Spybot will still be open. Therefore, with Spybot still open in advanced mode, click the tools button in the left pane, then click IE Tweaks. Now click 'lock HOSTS file......'

    Hope this helps. :)
