reboot-

Those directions do not work for me. The only connections i have listed are America Online, Internet Connection, and Local Area Network. I tried on all of them to do what you said but there was no way to add the TCP/IP.

edit-Just tried a hunch. Dialed up to AOL with my modem and there were no problems. It downloaded and uploaded just fine. It must be a problem in the settings.

NOW you tell us that @#$&^& AOL is on this thing...sheesh...forget everything I have typed to this point.
Is the modem recognized in device mangler? Any errors?
If not, contact AOL, and get them to sort out the mess.

reboot calm down. this afternoon was the first time i have dialed up to AOL in about 3 years. I have had cable since it was available in my area. I dialed up just to see if the modem was working correctly for another program. AOL is the only other program i have on my PC that i can use the modem for. I fail to see what the big deal with this is.

If the Modem works to dial up AOL then the Modem must be ok.

As to not working for faxing it may well be that the modem is not at the address or Com port that fax is looking for it.

Or the fax may be looking at the Cable connection and just will not work.

Some ( not all ) but some, systems will not handle both an Internal Modem and a cable modem served by a NIC and do it correctly.

On Some systems the Internal Modem will keep the Cable modem from work correctly. ( or stop it completely ) MY daughter just went through that problem until her Cable Internet supplier finaly realized what was wrong and helped her disable the Internal Modem.

If a good solid fax is needed, get and External Modem, put it on COM1 or 2 and have far greater reliability. Regardless of OS.

Reboot may be a little strong I agree.

AOL has been known to cause mucho many problems for a system. I tries it once and it messed things up so bad only a re-install of 98 fixed things up.

Excuse me, but .......

Doesn't AOHELL still disable all other DUN settings? And, don't you still have to reinstall MS DUN after removing AOHELL from what once was a perfectly good system before AOHELL changed some 6-7 mb of System files?

Educate me .........

Personally, I thought Reboot was quite polite regarding a certain ISP mentioned in this thread - in fact, almost too kind.

Yes but this setup worked fine for the fax in 98. That leads me to beleive that there is a misconfigured setting somewhere in the mix.

I should stay out of here when I am in a hurry.

That was supposed to read

Reboot may seem a bit strong but I agree.

AOL will tear up a system.

If my memory serves me correctly you are quite right about AOL and Dial up networking.

Sorry, but just to reiterate, AOL will royally mess with DUN, and any protocalls associated with dialling anything through a modem.
Even removing AOL from the computer will probably NOT return it to a state that can actually use DUN properly.
If the modem is in device mangler, and has no problems, the odds are it works fine. Unless it's been zapped and blown the switching transistor that detects the dial tone voltage, it should work.. Now you need to get AOL off there, and I would suggest a system restore to a previous point, then remove DUN via add/remove programs, windows components, restart, and run inetwiz to reinstall DUN.
The fax program is using your cable settings, and trying to dial a fax number through the modem, using your cable internet settings, it's just not gonna happen, and until you get a proper set of DUN protocalls installed, and THEN get the fax program to use DUN, and recognize the modem, and what port it's on, not any other settings, you're not going to fax, or connect to any other ISP.
In the future, you do NOT need an accout with an ISP to check a modem connection, and especially NOT AOL pleeeeeeeeaze!!!

p.s. I could have said a LOT more than I did (about AOL), and here I was congratulating myself on actually showing some restraint.
My apologies if my comments about AOL sent some of you spinning.

I understand what you are saying about AOL. The only problem is that I can't restore to a point without AOL b/c my family uses AOL for their email and I don't want to have to uninstall AOL then have to re-install it whether or not your suggestions work for the fax.

So be it. However, I think Reboot is 100% on the mark re: your problem and he has given you a solution if you read what he said very carefully.

Now that you've stated your position on AOHELL (excuse me for going off subject again) I have a couple more questions. Did you know you can have AOHELL access thru your cable provider and pay somethng like $16 instead of $23 a month (still a rip off, but ...) And, did you know your kids can still have AIM without AOHELL.

You must have read the Wall Street Journal article about Time Warner's problems when they were mandated to use AOL for corporate email. You might be interested in the outcome.....and, perhaps you would be doing yourself a FAVOR by following their example.

Couldn't stand it - here's part of the lead in from the March WSJ 22nd article:

"In a humbling reversal, AOL Time Warner Inc. is retreating from a top-level directive that required the divisions of the old Time Warner to convert to an e-mail system based on AOL software and run by America Online's giant public server computers in Virginia.
The drive to get all the company's 82,000 employees to use AOL e-mail was an attempt to give symbolic resonance to the marriage of AOL and Time Warner, the largest corporate merger in U.S. history and perhaps the most-scrutinized litmus test for the marriage of the old and new economies.
Instead, management got months of complaints from both senior and junior executives in the divisions involved, who said the e-mail system, initially designed for consumers, wasn't appropriate for business use. Among the problems cited: The e-mail software frequently crashed, staffers weren't able to send messages with large attachments, they were often kicked offline without warning, and if they tried to send messages to large groups of users they were labeled as spammers and locked out of the system. Sometimes, e-mails were just plain lost in the AOL etherworld and never found. And if there was an out-of-office reply function, most people couldn't find it. "

It's 14.95 for BYOA(Bring Your Own Access) from AOL. I haven't dialed up to AOL since the late part of 99 when i got cable.

reboot

I tried to follow your suggestion but there is no DUN to remove in Add/Remove Programs.

OK lets see what we have here according to my thinking.

The original problem was ( and I believe still is ) that FAXING could not ( can't ) be made to work.

The setup that is bieng attempted in XP apparently worked fine in 98. Well, we are no longer working with 98. Just because it worked in 98 does not mean it will work in XP. And the reverse could be true also.

It appears that the modem itself seems to be working as it will allow Dial-up access to AOL. At least I believe that is correct.

So that says to me that the TCP/IP protocols are there. But they may all be AOL dial-up adapters and not a standard MS dial-up adapter which the Fax side may require.

The last that I knew AOL when installed puts at least two of its own TCP/IP Dial-ups adapters into what in XP is called My Network Places. ( Network Neighborhood for myself )

So the the fax may be trying to use the AOL adapter(s) which will not work.

I have ABSOLUTLEY NO IDEA how to do it in XP. But somehow a Standard TCP/IP Dial-up adapter needs to be installed so the that fax can ( hopefully ) use it.

If it existed before AOL was installed, AOL does not( or did not in my case ) remove the standard Dial-up adapter. Its just puts in its own and works around the other.

Again I believe Reboot is on the right track regarding protocols.

It may also be possible that the order in which thing were done could have an effect.

If the Modem and fax were set up and working before AOL was installed it MIGHT still work.

This may just be more of my Wild A** Guessing but this is waht I do think. And some of it from a little past experience.

TCP/IP for Windows is NOT there. AOL's version of it IS there, and the modem is trying to use AOL protocalls to dial for sending a fax.
Never gonna work.
Just go into add/remove programs, windows components, and add Windows faxing.
Open Networking in control panel, add a protocall, select MS, TCP/IP.
Highlight it, select Properties, check that it is NOT default, and is NOT bound to the logon (take the tick mark out).
Now you're going to have to go into the properties of your fax program, and specify the modem, and the port it's on. It should use TCP/IP protocalls for it's dialling, although with AOL on there, no guarantees.
If it were me, I would uninstall all networking components, and AOL, then completely remove AOL manually through regedit.
I would also remove any dial-up connections, and your fax program.
Then reinstall the fax, and see if it works. Providing the modem is correctly installed, it should.
Now reinstall AOL, and hopefully it will leave the protocalls in place for the fax.
You might have to face it, it may never work with AOL on the machine.

Reboot

I understand you now, but i still can't figure out how to add another TCP/IP protocol. There are no options for me to do this via the network connections. What connection am i adding the protocol to? I understand everything after that.

OK, you may not have TCP/IP as a protocall you can manually add. I have my XP set up a bit different than most.
The only thing I can think of, is to uninstall XP fax, then restart, and reinstall it, then work through the options there. It should install the protocalls needed to send a fax, bypassing the AOL stuff.
Fax will appear in Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications, so you can run through the wizard there, and it should look for a modem on your system, and then simply use it to fax.
I have a feeling that AOL is so pervasive that it's not going to work though.
