    I FIXED THE PROBLEM! :)

tonight i uninstalled ie6,sp1. that process reinstated the previous version of the browser i had on this machine, which is ie5.5.

i now have the Confirm File Replace dialog right back where it belongs!!

that is, it DOES appear when i drag an url file from the browser address window and drop it into a desk top folder, more than one time.

i now have to decide whether i want to reinstall ie6,sp1.

    i think i do,

but it was getting flakey on me in other ways, too, not just the missing dialog.

maybe i'll stick with 5.5 for a while.

i promised to report back if and when i found joy. :)

i'll follow up if i do upgrade to 6.0

THANK YOU VERY MUCH TO THE FOLKS WHO OFFERED HELP AND IDEAS!

    :)

WOW! Thanks for posting back. I've just about pulled all my hair out trying to find the answer for this little glitch. This isn't the first time SP1 has thrown a monkey wrench into an otherwise well working system. I do recommend that you try it again though.

I had to do three installs of it before I got one that was bug free. At least I think it is. My bottom line was, be sure to kill all background programs prior to downloading and installing the SP1 for either IE or XP. Thank God for GoBack, which made it rather easy and painless.

Even my "good" install had to have some of the default setting restored. The SP1 seems to set things up very conservatively.

    Best regards.

    hi zephyr

you're definitely welcome, i mean for the posting back part.

part of me wants to get right back on the ie6,sp1 horse to see if i can get it back the way it was.

and part of me wants to ride this 5.5 pony for a spell and enjoy the hassle-free experience.

i also want to see if those other minor glitches get gone, which my better sense says they went bye-bye with the 6.0,sp1 uninstall.

very good advice, btw, about shutting down all background apps before installing. i think most of us know that, but we might tend to get lazy or whatever from time to time and not close it all down like we should. you think?

anyway, i'm dragging and dropping now like the old days and really stoked.

    :)

    i knew you'd be relieved.

when i reinstall ie6,sp1 in a few days, or whenever, then i'll see what i've got.

btw, how'd you like that regsvr error message?

"Comdlg32.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. DllRegisterServer may not be exported, or a corrupt version of Comdlg32.dll may be in memory. Consider using Pview to detect and remove it. "

you guys are terrific the way you pitch in.

    :)
