Ah well, I see those links are dead. Did you make sure the related.htm file is present? The link for download doesn't appear to be working (at least not for me), so if you need a copy of the file, someone can put up an attachment for it. I have one. In addition to adding the registry entry, I had to also do Method 2 from Zander's link for the related icon to show up as a customise option.
This link, http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo/a/alexa.asp, also shows a workaround to data being sent to MSN or Alexa.

Note that the per-user reg file will not be targeted by Ad-aware.

I used the "Per user" file and it was indeed targeted by Ad-Aware so perhaps the game has changed since that info was printed.

Hmm....suppose that's possible. However, I notice that Ad-aware targeted an HKEY_Users entry for you, rather than the HKEY_Current_User entry that the reg file enters.

I see now that the HKEY_Users entry is also present after adding the HKEY_Current_User entry on my machine. Wonder if allowing Ad-aware to remove the one will affect the other??

I tested that and it affects all users. The button disappears and the option to install it as well. And the Registry entries are also gone!

Soooo, I suppose you could say the feature is the result of a browser hi-jack even though the original hi-jacking was done by M$. :) Semantics, one mans' hi-jack is another mans' feature, go figure. I think I'll dump it now that I've beat it to death. I never had it that I know of until now so I won't miss it much. I'm sure it saps a little processor time while doing its hunting.

Yep......I got the same results allowing Ad-aware to remove the HKEY_USERS entry. Took out the whole thing. So it would need to be put on the ignore list to keep or deselected for removal with each scan.

Mine didn't work either. Dumped it out of the reg. I guess you could keep it for cosmetic purposes. Maybe I'll reinstall it and fiddle with when I have a little more time to devote to it. I put it on a disk. Create a exclusionary rule in NIS if it's possible. I just accessed related.htm SP2 is restricting its use.

Actually, mine worked just as it was supposed to but then I don't have SP2 installed so that may be the factor that is stopping yours. SP2 seems to affect many areas that aren't fully defined as yet. :) I'm holding off on it, at least until I understand fully what it will affect. I'm sure it'll be incorporated in such a way that I'll eventually need it to access the Updater site but for the time being I'll let it twist in the wind.

Did it work right away or did you have to create rules for your firewall or antivirus. I found Related.htm tried to access it but SP2 has a new security bar. It has an option to allow blocked content for that file(I think, not to sure). I don't want to allow blocked content and then later find out I allowed all sorts of weirdness onto my machine because it unblocked everything. Well tried unblocking the content related still did not work. So SP2 must have a strangle hold on it.

It works right out of the gate for me, no problem with the firewall or AV. I can turn it on and off by simply running contradicting .reg files such as :

    for ON:

    Code:
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a}]
     "MenuText "= "@shdoclc.dll,-864 "
     "MenuStatusBar "= "@shdoclc.dll,-865 "
     "Script "=hex(2):43,3a,5c,57,49,4e,44,4f,57,53,5c,77,65,62,5c,72,65,6c,61,74,65,64,2e,68,74,6d,00
     "clsid "= "{1FBA04EE-3024-11D2-8F1F-0000F87ABD16} "
     "Icon "= ",4 "
     "HotIcon "= ",4 "
     "ButtonText "= "@shdoclc.dll,-866 "

    and for OFF:

    Code:
    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a}]
     "MenuText "= "@shdoclc.dll,-864 "
     "MenuStatusBar "= "@shdoclc.dll,-865 "
     "Script "=hex(2):43,3a,5c,57,49,4e,44,4f,57,53,5c,77,65,62,5c,72,65,6c,61,74,65,64,2e,68,74,6d,00
     "clsid "= "{1FBA04EE-3024-11D2-8F1F-0000F87ABD16} "
     "Icon "= ",4 "
     "HotIcon "= ",4 "
     "ButtonText "= "@shdoclc.dll,-866 "

(The only difference being the minus sign after the bracket in the second .reg file.)

Save the code to two separate notepads, with a .reg extension, file type All Files (*.*) So, RelatedOn.reg and RelatedOff.reg would be an example. Double click to merge whenever you want to use them. You will need to open a new IE window to see the change.
