Click Start< My Computer< double click on the C Drive and browse to C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution. Right click on the following folders: DataStore and Download. When you right click on each folder click on Rename. Add .bak to each of those folder names. They should read DataStore.bak and Download.bak

Do the same thing for the C:/Windows/system32/catroot2 folder. Rename it to catroot2.bak

Did you copy each command and then paste them into command prompt rather than typing them all out?

Yes, I copied and pasted them. They are one entire command string. Right?

No, they are two seperate commands that have to be entered in seperately.

    The first command is:

    sc.exe sdset bits D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCS WLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

    The second command is:

    sc.exe sdset wuauserv D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCS WLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

Well, there is nothing else I can can do to help you with those commands.

If those commands won't work and you have entered them in correctly then go ahead and move on to the next step in the Windows Update reset process.

Hi Evan. Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat I get an error message that says: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. I did this successfully: Click Start< My Computer< double click on the C Drive and browse to C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution. Right click on the following folders: DataStore and Download. When you right click on each folder click on Rename. Add .bak to each of those folder names. They should read DataStore.bak and Download.bak. I was unsuccessful with these: No, they are two seperate commands that have to be entered in seperately. I got an error 87 Syntax error. I was unsuccessful with these: To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press ENTER after you type each command.

    ■ Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore *.bak
    ■ Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download *.bak
    ■ Ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 *.bak. The fiename, directory, or volume label syntax is incorrect. I was successful with these:7. Reset Winsock. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

    netsh reset winsock

    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, you have to set the proxy settings. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

    proxycfg.exe -d

    The first command is:

    sc.exe sdset bits D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCS WLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

    The second command is:

    sc.exe sdset wuauserv D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCS WLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

Do the same thing for the C:/Windows/system32/catroot2 folder. Rename it to catroot2.bak

Well since resetting Windows Update did not work we may have to repair the system files in the installation.

Do you have a Windows XP CD that you have access to?

If you don't have a Windows XP CD see if you can borrow one from a friend or relative that has one. Chances are that the recovery disks won't allow you to do a repair install of Windows and will most likey reformat the entire system and restore it back to when you first got the computer.

I want to avoid doing that if possible so a Windows XP CD you can use to repair the Windows installation and still keep your personal data files intact.

NO, you can't repair XP Home with an XP Pro CD.

I'm not sure what Sony's policy is with regards to the OS. Check with Sony Support.

Evan I was able to back up all of my files to an external hard drive. I then restored my computer back to its original state using my restorations disks.

Thats good that you were able to get your system fully up and running after using the restoration disks. Since you restored your system using the recovery disks make sure you update your computer to Service Pack 3 and install a good antimalware program.
