You should do both of Arie's posts #15 and 20 and let us know the results!

Because in my first request for you to do DAF I only asked for "Reinstall BITS" I would like you to confirm that you did all of the following in DAF as posted in my second request:

    Reinstall BITS
    Repair Permissions
    Reinstall Automatic Updates Service
    Reinstall WMI/WBEM

    After doing all the above.

Get me the services under Remote Procedure Call that are disabled. Only the disabled.

I did do Arie's instructions in post #15 and got this error post #17

I have a question about post # 20 It is asking for my SP3 disk. Is that the one I should be using rather than my original home edition CD SP1 as requested? If so where do I find it in the I386 file on my SP3 disk?

Absolutely use only an SP3 disk on an SP3 OS. If you use an older it will put back old prior SP3 files.

The I386 folder in on your SP3 Disk.

Never use the other older disks again for updates or SFC!

And what about my question about DAF!!??

Sorry for the confusion. yes I did run DAF the way you instructed in #18

    Yes I did Reinstall BITs
Ran Repair permisson-unable to run error I did get the one error. See post #19 for JPG
    Reinstalled Autowindowsupdate
Reinstall WMI/WBEM- had to tell it where to look for file ncprov.mof then ran okay

I followed Arie's instructions in post #20 and used my SP3 disk when prompted. Told it to look in I386 on my SP3 disk.
Actually I also put a copy of my I386 from SP3 on C:\ for future.

    Hi Alicia

We are missing something here? Do other updates from Winupdate install or is it only these 3?

Lets take a deeper look at Services and drivers.

This will show what each svchost is running.

To see what svchost is running hidden from you, copy the text between the lines but not the lines.

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\tasklist.exe /svc >> "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\Tasklist.txt
    ----------------------------------------------------------

    then
    Start-Run
    type cmd
    hit enter or click OK

rt click in the open cmd screen and rt then paste
    hit enter twice

Now repeat the same process with the below

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\sc query type= service > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\ScQuery.txt
    ----------------------------------------------------------

    then

    close cmd prompt

Now there are 2 new icons on the desktop Tasklist.txt and ScQuery.txt
Post back contents of both! You can delete them later.

Arie I get the same error message as before. TryingtostartBITS.jpg

Dumb question, when attaching a file to a post that has already been uploaded how do you do that without uploading again. When I click on paper clip it takes me to a list which is not complete and with no naming of the attachments so I don't know which one to use, if it's even on the list.

    Tasklist.jpg

The txt file does go to desktop but it's empty?

All 3 updates could not be downloaded from the microsoft update site. I used the windows catalogue for two of them and searched KB to run Malicious software tool.

To be honest I don't have much more on how to solve this. Last ditch:

    1. Run sfc /scannow from a command prompt
    2. A Windows Repair install

    I agree with Arie.

Please be sure to use the SP3 CD to do this!

No wonder you have problems BITS is not even listed in the ScQuery!

The reason Tasklist did not work is because you have XP Home and the Tasklist program is not included with Home.

It will work so download it here and move it into the Windows folder.
    http://www.computerhope.com/download/winxp/tasklist.exe

    Then run it again.

Do not post attachments in this case.

Open the Tasklist.txt on your desktop, "Ctrl A" to Highlight/Block then Rt click and copy. Open post and paste.

Okay I ran sfc and my event viewer just says it started and completed successfully.

Just as an aside, I lost my Microsoft update history on the website in all this.

I appreciate all the help Arie & Mike. I guess for now I'll have to scan and then use the catalogue to D/L and install. Unless there is an easier way?

Someone suggested I do the following:

It looks like the BITS service settings are messed up. Please download the
    bitsadmin.exe tool from
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...76-9BB9-4126-9761-BA8011FABF38&displaylang=en
    and do the following:

    bitsadmin /util /repairservice /force

After that send me the output of the following command:

    bitsadmin /util /version /verbose

What do you guys think? Can it even be used for SP3?

I do have bitsadmin.exe located here : C:\XPSP3\Root\SUPPORT\TOOLS\SUPPORT.CAB from when I was making my SP3 slipstreamed CD

Excelent idea an may do the job. Won't hurt anything as BITS is already broke.

The force may just do it! Ive used it before but fogot it!

This should have been addressed in Arie's post #15, addressed again indirectly by Arie in post #20 and was also address by DAF.

But since you have done some of these things and then done an SFC with your SP3 cd it may be ready for this procedure.

    Go with it!

Where do I extract the bitsadmin.exe to? Windows\System32?

(I know the part about Run and cmd).

This cmd: bitsadmin /util /repairservice /force is there something before or after that I should be adding to make it work? I know nothing about the cmd prompt except copy and paste.

And this cmd: bitsadmin /util /version /verbose is there something before or after that I need to make it run? Where does the 'output' go?

    No not \Windows\system32.

This is the install exe not the running BITS. Extract it to where ever you put other progams you have downloaded to install.

This program can be deleted after it is used.
