So, a related problem I have is:

When all was rosy with the update world, I tried to download the critter, and it seemed to do so, or at least I got the message that Windows needed to restart to complete installation... And Then The Screaming Began!

Needless to say it didn't work and stopped in the middle of things, but ever since then I continually get the "Windows needs to restart... pick a time" message. Even if I do nothing, the computer restarts and tries to install the corrupted update, eventually failing and then uninstalling the changes it tried to make and -incidentally - taking about 85 minutes to do so, then rebooting and using another 5 - 10 minutes sorting itself out.

The question is, how can I prevent this from happening? While not a major disaster, it is supremely annoying.

So... let me ask you... Was the update offered by Windows? Sounds like it was not.

If something is working, I've learned not to mess with it.

I did try the same thing back when 1709 came out... as a precaution I made a full image of my system, and *boom* it went pear-shaped.

As I posted somewhere else, I final got offered 1709 by WU about 10 months after its release. I made my image backup and proceeded, this time no more trouble, all was working just fine. I'm reckoning that since my hardware is quite old (March '09), that's the reason for the delay...

I haven't been offered 1809 on my main PC (I'm running it in a HyperV VM), and I'm not going to force it :)

I would try running the Disk Cleanup (Start > Run > cleanmgr.exe). Click the Clean up system files button, select your C drive and make sure to tick the box for Windows Update Cleanup

That seems to have worked! Thanks.

Any word from Microsoft as to when the update will be "officially" sent out to the community?

Version 1809 is back. I created installation media via the Media Creation Tool, let it loose on my Toshiba LapTop and after an hour it was up and running. No problems, no files lost!

Note: Microsoft asks customers to wait until the update is offered to their device.

Well, since I never let my LapTop run 24/7 but only when I use it, Microsoft has a tendency to interfere with my work. For that reason, when I don't plan to use the LapTop, I initiate the upgrade manually. That way, I have some control of what happens and when.

That's fine, just know that'll (slightly?) increase the chance of problems...

Actually, my experience is the opposite. Friends have asked for assistance when an automatic upgrade didn't complete but was rolled back. Using the "tool" to do it, I rescued their systems without a problem.

We're talking different things here. The 1809 update should not be 'forced' on a PC, but one should rather wait for WU to offer it (that's Microsofts suggestion, which I fully support). I had that experience myself with 1709. Installing it manually when it came out resulted in an inoperable PC, but when it was offered some 10 months later from WU the upgrade went without a hitch...

I believe there should be a more defined distinction between an update (monthly) and an upgrade (bi-annual). We are both talking about an upgrade (bi-annual).

(Wasn't "upgrade" the word used at the start of these events for a new version?)
