My original optical device for the HP is a Philips SCB5265 DVD-ROM/CD-RW. But I also have a Philips SDVD8820 DVD-+/- RW from the Everex.(which I have been using in the HP).

    Sorry hllstrHUNTER

I asked for burning software (Nero, CloneCD etc) not hardware.

 Sorry, I know the difference, I really do. What I don't know is where to find that information. I have the SIW program, would it be listed in there?

When you're burning a CD or DVD what program do you use? Just to be clear we're going to be using the HP to make the disc.

Probably under Applications or Installed Programs, but so will everything else so I don't see how that would help.

When I burn a Music cd I use Itunes or Windows Media Player. When I burn DVD's I have to use something called Sonic My DVD. When I burn program or other(pictures, etc.) files I just use the drag and drop method, with the cd writing wizard. And, yes, I will need to use the HP to write the disk.

    Ok,

Please read the instructions to create a Bootable Dos CD-Rom (single boot image) (stop at Bootable Dos CD-Rom (multiple boot images)) and let me know if you'll have any problems following them?

Ok, just to clarify this last step.

I should copy the DOS Diagnostic tool into the "cds\cdromsi\files" folder, is that correct? Do I need to change the autorun.bat file?

    Hi hllstrHUNTER,

I'm sorry but after reviewing this thread I'm not entirely sure that testing the HD would solve (or assist in solving) the problem. I'm sure others are looking in on this thread and they may be able to assist but failing that I can only suggest that you contact a local Everex dealer for further assistance.

I do apologise for being unable to assist further. :(

Well, that's discouraging:( I would like to thank you for your time wildfire. I Guess I'll just salvage the parts from it that I can use and leave the rest on the curb for the garbage man. Again many thanks for your assistance:) Jon

I would like to personally thank whoever gave me the negative reputation points for one of my posts in this thread.. Speak up! How dare you criticize me for asking questions regarding something I don't understand. If everyone was an expert then this website would be unnecessary.

    Hi hllstrHUNTER,

    Do I understand:

    1) No matter which HDD you put into your Everex laptop, the BIOS doesn't recognize it. Correct?

    2) You've gone into the BIOS and selected "Primary Master "” Auto Detect ", and it still doesn't recognize the HD. Correct?

    3) There's no "Access Mode" limitation (i.e., CHS, LBA, etc.). Correct?

    4) Both drives are jumpered to Master when you plug them in. Correct?

    5) The cable coming from the motherboard is 80 pin (or 40 pin), the same as in the working laptop. Correct?

If all the above is true, and you're going to junk it anyway, how 'bout trying a couple of things first?

    1) Replace the ribbon cable.

    2) Remove the memory stick(s) and clean the contacts with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Maybe replace one of the sticks with one you know works.

    3) Does your laptop have a little round battery on the motherboard? If so, replace it.

    4) Try clearing the CMOS and then booting to the BIOS and Auto Detect the drive.

    5) Take a flashlight and a magnifying glass and check out the MB and see if there's any crud around any of the solder points.

All the above may not give you any joy and boot, but it only takes about 10 minutes to do it.

Then again, I could be wrong.

Although I don't have to "speak up" I gave the negative rep hllstrHUNTER, The criticism was not for asking questions but for the lack of valid answers. If you feel this negative rep was undeserved then PM me personally and I'll consider asking a member of staff to remove it.

    Hi Just Plain ;)

A laptop is an entirely different beast than a desktop, most of your questions/suggestions are irrelevant and the others have already been looked at. Thanks for looking in anyway and keep up the good work.

    Hi wildfire,

Uh, you must have missed my "weasel clause ":
    :D

Also, this isn't the first time it's happened, but when I responded to hllstrHUNTER, there was just one page in this discussion. It wasn't until I logged in just now that I saw the 2nd page. Had the second page showed up I wouldn't have responded because, like you said, that stuff had been looked at. I'm using SeaMonkey 1.1.17 and I've noticed a few glitches on other sites. I'm going to go back to 1.1.14 or 1.1.16.

p.s. This is totally off topic, but do you know what Coleman Balls are? Legit question.

Kind of a moot point but that long laundry list is more than a little off base. There is no such thing as an 80 pin cable. Its an 80 wire cable that goes on a 40 pin IDE header but wait, there's more. Laptop drives have 44 pins, not 40.

I could continue, but like I said - its a moot point. The credibility already has a big enough hole in it, no need to pour any more fuel on the fire.

As to hillstrHunter and the negative feedback - I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I've seen 3rd party drive overlays that can cause unrecognizeable drives but from what I read, this happened rather suddenly and you said the Fujitsu drive in question was readable in an HP laptop. Further, you said the HP's HDD was readable in the original laptop. Perhaps there is a logical explanation for this but it also appears to this author that something is missing.

    ;)
