Broni - thanks for explaining the hosts file. I was a bit worried as many of the sites listed sounded nasty and I have never been to them!

I hope I did this step correctly. I followed your directions but did not close Firefox when I ran FRST. Is that OK?

    Quick Update

    Broni,

I am running Sophos but it looks like the process may take a while. The status bar shows there is a ways to go.

I will post the log as soon as possible.

Have you found anything yet that would explain the original outbound link attempts?

Would it make sense to add data.rtbfy.com to my hosts file? (assuming this is a file I can edit directly somehow)?

    Sophos

    Broni,

Sophos just finished after about 8 hours! The good news is it found 0 threats. I could not click on Details, perhaps because there are none to show?

I will be out for a few hours. Looks like we are close.

Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
    Alternate download: http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=java

You only need to update 32-bit version. 64-bit version is fine.

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.
Note 2: If you're running 64-bit system make sure you install BOTH, 32-bit and 64-bit Java.

    ==============================

    Your computer is clean [IMG]

    1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download [IMG]DelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:
    • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
    • Remove disinfection tools
    • Create registry backup
    • Purge System Restore
    • Reset system settings
Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

    2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

    3. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

    4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
    Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Scan without installing plugin" and then on "Scan now ")

    5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

    6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

    7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly (you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix).

    8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

    9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

    10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

    Java Questions

    Hi Broni,

I have a few questions about the Java updates. I first ran the 32-bit version. After the installation finished, it told me my computer is at serious risk and I should uninstall out dated versions:

    Java 7 Update 67 (64-bit)
    Java 8 Update 20 (64-bit)

I am pretty sure I should uninstall these version, but there is a warning that older Java apps may stop working. So I unchecked the boxes and did NOT uninstall the versions. If I should uninstall them, I hope I can simply re-run the installation package.

Second, you said my 64-bit version was fine. But then said I should be sure to install both versions. Do you want me to download and install the latest 64 bit version as well?

Finally, out of curiosity, do we know what was causing Firefox to try to connect to that site and which of the steps you suggested resolved the issue?

    Thanks!!

Yes, you should not keep any older Java versions. Uninstall them.

The latest Java is Version 8 Update 31 so your 64-bit version IS up to date but your 32-bit is not.
You have Java 7 Update 51.

    It's Back!

    Hi Broni,

I uninstalled the old Java per your instructions and I also followed the final "Mr. Clean" steps.

I have some bad news. I was on a website to place a takeout order from a local restaurant and the same Malwarebytes warning popped up three times! Here is a copy of today's MBAM log:

The only hiccup I ran into with your instructions is the AdobE Reader plugin for Firefox. I am running a version 10.x that is listed as out of date. I tried multiple times to install the version 11, but the installation never works. I read this was a problem with Vista (but I am running Windows 7).

Would you be able to walk me through the process of adding a line to my hosts file so that 208.43.117.244 is redirected to 127.0.0.1? If we did that wouldn't that fully protect me while getting rid of the pop up messages?

Also, I forgot to mention that prior to the problem coming up I downloaded and opened a dozen pdf files from my bank.

rtbfy.com is some advertisers site and it probably kicked in when you visited that take out site.
Note that MBAM warning is for "outbound" traffic not "inbound" so nothing was traveling to your computer but out of your computer.
I wouldn't worry much about it.
Did you install WOT to make sure you visit safe sites?

As for Reader issue I suggest new topic in Windows forum since this is not malware related.

    Thank You

    Hi Broni,

Thank you for all of your help. I will follow your suggestions for staying clean.

I found a site the explained a way to modify the hosts file using Notepad. This is what I did.

    1) In Explorer turned off Read Only on hosts
    2) Copied to my desktop
    3) Opened in notepad
    4) Added lines at end (see below)
    5) Saved
    6) Moved back to original folder
    7) Made it Read Only

Thanks again!!! I see you marked the thread as Solved and I agree. :)
