    Ramona,

In response to your post of yesterday: When all of this first started, the suggestion you gave me about enabling Navigator and Mail and Newsgroups, was one that I had purposely disabled.

In my feeble mind, I was figuring that if I had them both enabled this silly software wouldn't know WHAT to do first. <G> I guess that was dumb on my part? Anyway they are both disabled right now. Perhaps you can explain.

All was working fine until a few minutes ago. I could open Navigator and click on the mail icon and it would open my mailbox. I was going back and forth just fine. Then while I was reading the posts here, I closed all open mail box windows and guess what? Now I can't get into my mailbox.

As I said originally, most of the time if I leave a mailbox window open I have no problem. But I know that is not a permanent solution. (Leaving windows open.) Something happens after I've had the browser open for a while.

For some reason I have aprox. 28 processes running. I must have a BUNCH of garbage going on here.

And yes, I am using that newest theme, Toy Factory. I don't recall if it happens with the others or not. I will give that a try. But I've been using Toy Factory for the past week and sometimes all is okay and it is not.

I can't handle the Newsgroups. Too complicated for me. I would need a full course just to figure them out.

Just for kicks, can you please give me instructions for creating a new profile. That will be my last resort. What does a new profile do that a re-install wouldn't?

I see that there is another post from Dennis. I've printed that off to read also.

As you caught previous, check task list and end Netscape process.

<< But I've been using Toy Factory for the past week and sometimes all is okay and it is not.>>
Ramona's suggestion to use "Modern or Classic" " theme's are very valid. Known email problem's with other themes.
    Good Luck

    vegaspat,
Change your Theme back to Modern. Toy Factory is one of the worst offenders in causing problems.

I always leave the Mail window open, as otherwise you will get no Mail Notification. A bug that hasn't yet been fixed. However, you should still be able to access the mail. Change Themes and then report your progress...

You should enable "When Netscape starts up Open
    Navigator
    Mail & Newsgroups

Did you also include the -browser -mail command switches to your Netscape icon?

    Ramona :D

P.S. You probably should run your msconfig, and take a look at your Windows startup items. Twenty-eight sounds like rather a lot, but then I'm not at all familiar with XP.

    Ramona and Dennis:

First thing--- I was not burning the CD's while Netscape was running. I just meant that prior to opening Netscape, I had been burning quite a few CD's. I just thought that perhaps I had tied up too much memory?

Now, I've reverted to Netscape Classic theme. Boy, that is sure boring.

I've enabled the two items you suggested. (Ramona.) I am having problems with adding the other two items in the "Target" box.

This is what I have: C:\Netscape\Netscape7\Netscp.exe

I put NOTHING in Program Files, if I can help it. That wouldn't cause a problem would it? I don't think I've ever had a problem with any other programs because of it.

Should I have added the quotes and the hyphens? I did and I got some sort of error message. Didn't make a note of it, but could if you need it.

    Dennis:

I have auto download set as a mail option. I also have it set to check every minute. (Messages) Is this a problem.?
    :(

I really appreciate all of your patience and help.

BTW, I surely love that Toy Factory theme. If it causes problems, why doesn't it get fixed!!!?

I use a dial up connection. Hope that doesn't complicate things.

    vegaspat,

Enter this line exactly as you see it. In fact just copy this line, and then paste it into your Target location in the Netscape 7 icon Properties sheet:
    "C:\Netscape\Netscape7\Netscp.exe" -browser -mail
Yes, checking for Mail every minute is a very large problem . Change the setting to every 10 minutes. Dialup is not a problem, autodownload is fine.

You may yet have to change to the Modern Theme, as Classic can also be cranky, but first let's see if the above changes will correct your Mail problems.

    Hang in there vegaspat

Ramonia has the patience of a saint. With luck adjusting the target line and possible moving to Modern theme will make your browser a happy camper. I'm not sure (Ramonia ?) but didn't the profile king at SillyDog say that the new "Sky Pilot" theme was email stable? It is a very attractive, colorful theme. But first, follow Ramonia's instructions and I'm sure everything will work out.

    Hey Dennis,

LOL! :D Yes, the "King of Profiles" did say that. I haven't tried the new release of SkyPilot yet, have you?

Before vegaspat does any more experimenting, I would like to see her get this Mail problem solved. That last little bit of information re: checking for mail every minute was a definite "Bingo! ". I have a gut feeling this might be the end of the problem.

Okay guys, I've changed to Modern and with a little cut and paste, the target has been changed.

I NEVER could tell when and where to leave a space.

Do the switches I added to the file accomplish the same thing as enabling Navigator and Mail & Newsgroup settings in Preferences? BTW, they are now enabled.

Is it okay to have both windows open with the Mailbox kind of hiding behind the Navigator window? If so, why doesn't Netscape do all of this when it installs?

I will work with these changes and see what happens. If it works flawlessly I will post back to let you know.

Now, what about this other theme? If this works, think I could spruce things up a little?:D

    Keeping My Fingers Crossed!

    Hi vegaspat,

You've heard the old saying: Don't touch that dial! Well, don't touch those settings, and for goodness sakes don't go doodling around with Themes. Give the changes you've made a week or so to see if the change you made in the Mail check time interval did the trick.

Yes, the command switches do basically the same thing as the Preferences settings, but... "Don't touch that dial! ". ;)

Yes, it's perfectly O.K. to leave your Mail component open all the time. I certainly do, so I can get the Mail Notification, and I'm pretty sure most other users do the same. Netscape 7 is a new, from the ground up, work in progress. It's not even close to end result yet. Those of us who choose to use the browser, have learned to work around the bugs, and look forward to the next release. Following the Mozilla NG gives you a good idea of the upcoming features on the next release of Netscape.

    Here's hoping,

    Ramona :D

    Hi vegaspat,

I decided to experiment with the latest SkyPilot Theme last night. I do like the looks of the Theme, and somehow it is more restful on my eyes.

To get to the point, I booted up this morning, logged on the Internet, checked mail on both my accounts, then started browsing. After a bit I noted that I had an envelope in the system tray, but hadn't received a mail notification for some time. This is rather unusual, as I get tons of email. Clicked on Get Msgs...nada! clicked on the Mail envelope in the Netscape Component Bar, and again nothing! I had to close Netscape, and open it again to get my Mail. This was no doubt part of your problem.

    FWIW,

    Ramona :D

    Ramona,

So far, so good. And thanks for experimenting with the other theme for me. :p

I am going to continue as is since you spent so much time getting me straightened out. I haven't had to re-boot once since early yesterday. But, I have to tell you that this theme is really a drag. I love something a little more splashy, but not at the expense of having to re-boot every hour or so.

BTW, this board is sooooooooo much better than the Newgroups. They seem so disorganized.

One more thing. What is your advice about uninstalling 4.79. Can't get rid of IE, which I don't use, but when I am sure 7.01 is working properly, I would think I wouldn't need all of these
    browsers hanging around?

    Hi vegaspat,

If HD space isn't an issue, I would keep 4.79. It's always nice to have a backup.

Here's a little program recommended to me by a friend. It's used to lock down IE, and useful if you don't use the browser: Enough is Enough

    Ramona,

Just wanted to let you know. So far, so good. No lock-ups and no re-boots.

Life with Netscape is good. :p

Thats great news vegaspat. We've all been where you were. N7x is a nice browser. I hope you've adjusted to the current theme. To add alittle color , spice things up via Windows themes and appearances. Hopefully Ramonia will get the low down on Sky Pilot. In the mean time.... Monday Rose tint glasses, Tuesday Sky Blue... :D
    Happy surf'in.
