on a NTFS drive the "Boot Sectors" are different than a FAT32, and not haveing a NTFS drive can not verify if my book is correct. book says "boot sector" is 7 sectors long with only the first sector specific to drive. The only difference between any NTFS drive is the data shown within the "NTFS Boot Sector template.

did you just convert fat32 to NTFS or use diskpart to delete partiton and then make a new NTFS partition. The best , I think is the latter. I do not use XP much so do not know how. If someone else is reading the post, they can help you better .

I just used the XP format function to format the drive. The option was set to NTFS so I left it as that. So to answer your question. Im assuming that the partition was not deleted. After this formatting has finished, would it be best to redo it? ..to delete the existing partition and redo the format? Anyone familiar with NTFS experience feel free to jump in. Thanks. BTW if deleting the partition is the best way to go, how best to accomplish this?

After reading help in XP , I would leave it like it is. There are 3 ways to change a FAT32 to NTFS
    1) convert , if one has data that needs to be saved on drive
    2) boot into Recovery Console and use Diskpart to deleat and remake partiton, one must be sure what drive is what and then run format.
3)format as you did, I think it must be just a short cut to deleteing and remakeing partiton by just changeing the partitiom type , auto running Fixboot and then formating.
