    Again, thanks for your advice and information. I got back from Arizona and found no miraculous healing of my computer. So, I cleaned all data off my C drive and did a clean reinstall of Windows 2000 pro. It worked!!. I am writing this message on the machine. I never figured out what went wrong. I probably wasted your and my time by trying to postpone the real fix. I have got a bit more work in the cleaning area and will be more careful in backups.
