Unless I misunderstood what AVG8 does there is a way to exclude some risky scanning. Go to Tools|Advanced Settings|Resident Shield|Exception|Add path.
I have this path excluded from scanning: C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\.
You should be able to narrow down to the Inbox, but considering that AVG8 has been finding alleged trojans, which were not there before, I may as well taking the exception to the entire folder. There are more safeguards at e-mail scanner.
I was very upset at AVG8, but it settled down. It does slow down my computer ( I have cable, of course), and scanning the entire 50 GB C drive has settled down to a bit over two hours.

I have also considered using McAfee (Cox Bennie) but it's quite possible that McAfee will have the same or worse problems. I've already lost the inbox; and since I've tamed AVG8, I haven't anything else to lose. I have 3 other computers still on AVG7.5. I may try McAfee on one of them to see if it has its own set of problems.

AVG7.5 is, reportedly not updating, as of May 31, so recent viruses can hit it.
It is the same thing as people using NS7.2, which has not been updated in years, and so vulnerable. The Inbox should have been retrievable, except for some settings in Tools|Adv.Settings|Maintenance|Virus Vault. My setting was to delete file automatically, in 3 days. In the meantime one can go to ools|History|Virus Vault. There is a Restore button there. I learned about these settings by, just, looking around. But, the Inbox should have been retievable.
As for McAfee, I could get it, because Cox is my ISP. I ask a local tech, and he told me that one may be slowed down even more, since it has the Firewall as well. I just called Cox, yesterday.
The reason why I started using AVG eight years ago was because McAfee was doing only weekly updates, with more frequent updates if some virus is unusually virulent. AVG may have more than one update each day, and, guess what? McAfee is still doing weekly updates!

still not fixed, another inbox bites the dust

Nice site. I had to register just to post this as another AVG 8 victim. Just on Monday I gave in to the nags, downloaded and installed version 8. With the first scan it claimed my inbox and the backup as well (was on another physical drive on the same machine). My only hope now is a restore utility, but so far had no luck with any. Not sure what to look for, as AVG renames the file to {something}.fil when it moves it to the vault. It may also compress it at that time, so I have no idea about the file size, either.

The AVG forums make it clear that AVG Technologies has been aware of the issue for weeks now. Yet, they not only allow users to download and run this software with a fatal flaw, they don't even mention the issue on their download page or anywhere one might get a chance to see it. Yeah, the beta release has the fix... Well, so much for trusting AVG, no problems for a good period of time. Will have to find another virus scanner now.

    Welcome to the Forum, ElvisKing!

    ElvisKing,

Under Tools | Advanced Settings | Resident Shield | Exceptions

Add the path to your Mail Account Folder, so AVG will ignore:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profile_name\*.slt\Mail\pop.isp_name.net

It is a well known fact that since all mail is in a single file, with e-mails back to back, that the entire file would end up in the Virus Vault, even if a single virus is detected. I think that I gave all the necessary info on how to get everything back, i.e. History|Virus Vault|highlight item, and click on Restore.
Problems, no doubt occur when someone is trying some restore utility, and anything which is not in the province of AVG8. I have never encountered anything like described, so, it is possible that AVG8 does not pay attention to what is requested, but I have not seen a single case when someone has tried what I said above. In another post, I said what to do to avoid problems, in first place. And, there is an area not mentioned or followed up by anyone else, i.e.
Tools|Advanced Settings. One should not have to check what AVG8 is doing, for any length of time, but it would not hurt to do that.

    That's how it should work

I don't know if I made myself clear. Because of the AVG bug the affected file is gone, gone from the vault, gone from the Windows index. Therefore, one cannot simply restore it from the vault. The only chance is trying to use 'undelete' utilities and praying that the lost file has not been overwritten since, but it is much harder in this case vs. just attempting to salvage lost images from a CF card or such.

What makes AVG so dangerous is that there is no warning for users. I have used AVG for years, never a problem. One 'upgrade' later this terrible mess.

Good information for people who still trust AVG. Not the case here I am afraid.

Altho I have not experienced the problems a few people have reported here, I do understand your reluctance to continue usiing AVG 8.

How many victims is there going to be?

Thanks magicat. No sign of my Inbox. It was Not in the Vault. One of AVG default settings I found was set to 1000 files. I lost about 1600 emails.
I have really been suffering over the past few days. My life revolves around my Inbox emails which I'm sure is true for many here. After all emailing
is and has been for along time a basic and vital form of communication.

I have always suspected that the people who make viruses could be the same people who make virus protection programs.
Well it seems to me that the "Latest Virus" you can catch for free like most are, is called AVG. 8.0 it not only deletes your Inbox but slows your PC
down. My computer has never ever been so slow, maybe 20 times slower and almost unbearable to use. So many things don't work as they used too.
I want very much to uninstall AVG 8.0 but have not at this stage as I might just need it to recover my lost Inbox. Am I expecting too much?

Who can you trust these days?

This is what I was able to find out on the AVG Free Forum:

    Email folders lost

    depends on OS

If you use Vista or XP with the system restore feature enabled then that's a way to get your inbox back. Unfortunately, no such rollback feature exists in Windows 2000. I was able to find an older version of my Inbox with PC Inspector File Recovery, which seems to be a nice tool to restore deleted files. The file is listed and marked as in good condition, but when you try to save it out of PC Inspector onto another disk you get a "could not read source file" error. Not sure why a recently deleted file residing on a slave drive cannot be restored. There has been no write activity on the slave drive since (except for the fatal AVG scan). I'll keep trying, not giving up on my mail history yet.

I guess the good thing about this - if there is anything good at all - is that I am learning about backup tools such as the Firefox Environment Backup Extension, which I am going to use from now on. I am also going to burn DVDs with critical data, a cheaper and more secure option than external drives. Might even make a DVD duplicate set and store those in a different physical location in case of a fire or other total loss.
