Using Dell desktop with Windows 7 64 Bit. 6 gh ram. Sorry, I'm 68 with limited experience with computer. Recently, when I turn on the computer, it takes a long time to boot up. After I put in the password, the welcome screen appears and after a while, turns to a black screen with just the cursor. This stays for at least 20 or more seconds before opening. I was thinking about trying Restore back to a month ago before this started. Don't know what to do

You might have to many programs trying to run on startup.

Depends on what is starting up. Some programs can be made without anything being downloaded to stop loading on startup. Need to know what programs are loading. Most of them shoule be by the clock on the bottom right. What is on the left side near your Start button don't count. Those are just shortcuts to programs.

Tell us what is beside the clock and we can go from there.

Download a program like Codestuff Starter and stop them from loading.

There is nothing hidden is there? Most PC's hide lots of things there that can be seen by clicking on the little << to see. I have mine set not to hide anything. I like to make sure I know what is there.

You could have Malware/Spyware on your machine that is causing this problem also. You should go to the Malware section and do what is asked there. It is pretty easy and straight forward.

OK thanks, I do have malware on the computer and it did not pick up anything. I'll try the start up and see what happens.

Did you update it before you ran it? There is an update just about every day and sometimes there are more than 1 update during the day. Did you run a Quick scan or a Full Scan?

Why don't you post a HJT log in the other section and let somebody look at it that can read them good? It can tell a lot about your PC that a HJT log reader can help you with problems.

I know someone has mentioned using a malware program, so I'd like to recommend Microsoft Security Essentials: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

For me, it's worked well and from the sounds of it you might want to consider running a virus scan.

Yes it would. You can only have 1 Anti-Virus program on your PC at one time that is active. Problem with 2 of them on there is when one of them downloads updates, the other may think it is a virus and not do it right. If you are paying for McCrappy, keep it till it expires and then remove it. Then download MSE. MSE will tell you when you download it about more than 1 AV program on your machine. It will ask you to uninstall the other before proceeding with the download/installation.

Yeah, but you may not have all the things on your PC that it shows. You can take a PC that they sell for $400.00 and add things to it and make it a $800.00 PC. Usually the latest dated ones are all. Drivers should not make it slow down.
I would still try in the Malware/Spyware section. If you get stuck on something, just ask and you will be helped.
