BootlogXP appears to spit out different drive letters when it creates the logs. I got the same drive letter in my logs, G:, and there is no G: drive on this system.

I am really not seeing two Windows installations? Windows files are not case sensitive.

    C:\WINDOWS>cd system32

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>cd ..

    C:\WINDOWS>cd System32

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>

Try that on your computer. svchost running multiple times not out of the ordinary. It has to do with loading DLL's: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056

It is not a slow PC. It is not the programs being loaded at startup. It's Windows Explorer hanging at login. And it appears to having something to do with the xpsp2res.dll file. Maybe instead of complaining about a second Windows install that several other people have already complained about, it might be helpful to research that file and find out what could make it hang explorer.exe.

And reinstalling Windows XP doesn't "fix" the problem. It ignores it. I'm tired of people just giving the same excuses that have nothing to do with the problem. It's like taking your car to the mechanic because of an oil leak, and he says it must be a switch on the radio.

I had a new customer recently that took their Dell computer to Staples because of a blue screen error. Staples said they would have to reinstall. When I met her, I told her let me look at it. I recognized the blue screen error, ran chkdsk. The computer booted just fine.

I too have been working on computers for 10 years, so 1997.

Cool it please - you are just inches away from being awarded infraction points for that outburst - which I have deleted as irrelevant to the thread.

    OOPS !! I goofed.

    That should heve read
He is talking about a slow booting machine.
Which I believe will continue to do so until the problem of attempting to load from two different places cleared up.

Which BTW I do not like writing but may well require FORMAT and start over.

I do understand and DID look at the log. And I see
Same file being called not only multiple times but from two different locations DOES take time to straighten out.

    Good points also.
Had to remove a couple from SU myself yesterday. Now I gotta try to find out how they got there. I THINK I know. But the KIDS won't admit it LOL

Gotta go refill the coffe cup.

I know this is a stupid question but how do you know it is xpsp2res.dll and it's hanging explorer.exe electronerdz? I just want to know how you saw it and I still can't.

I think you will be WASTING your time.

That fix relates to RUNNING 3rd party programs AFTER Windows is loaded. Not Long pause at boot

    kryptic,

Under process ID 1900 (explorer.exe) of your log, there are the following lines:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\secur32.dll
    13.12.2007 09:49:02.258
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msimg32.dll
    13.12.2007 09:49:02.258
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xpsp2res.dll
    13.12.2007 09:49:02.293
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\actxprxy.dll
    13.12.2007 09:51:53.279
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msutb.dll
    13.12.2007 09:51:54.332

If you notice, xpsp2res.dll starts loading at 09:49:02 and 293ms. Then thenext file loads at 09:51:53 and 279ms. That is 2 minutes. I have the same thing, about two minutes of hang time. Two minutes is 120 seconds... a common timeout period for programs.

Can you give me more information about what programs you have installed (that are 3rd party and doesn't come with Windows) and a little more information about how you have your network setup, and your settings for things like AntiVirus, etc so I can compare it to the computer I am working on? Being that the xpsp2res.dll file is for Service Pack 2 (and has some API's relating to that), it's likely to have something to do with networking and/or antivirus (two big updates in SP2 with the security center). When I get back to my office, I am going to play around with stuff like the antivirus and the firewall settings. But it IS explorer.exe hanging, as that is what loads after you click login, and it is what loads the desktop (icons) when it is done loading all of it's corresponding DLL's. If you press Ctrl-Alt-Del during that 2 minute period, and open Task Manger, you will probably find that you can run stuff like "calc" from the File | Run menu and things load fine.

Well I have Zone Alarm Security Suite running.
Adobe Audition 3, which had problems starting up but I found a reg file online which fixed that.
    Nero 8
(I mention the last two because they may have been installed around the time of this problem but I can't recall for sure.)

My network is a DSL router connected to a wireless router to which I have two machines hard wired and a laptop on wireless 802.11n. This problem is occurring on one of the hard wired machines.

The log file ALSO ahows this.
Explorer.exe loading ( or attrmpting to load) twice from G:\Windows and then switching to C:\Windows

If that does not indicate more than one install of Windows and it trying to run from both then I will get outa here and stay out.

A question that just came to my mind is- If Windows Updates are downloaded WHERE do they go ? G: or C:

    Gotta do some house cleaning.

Ok BillyBob, I have a request. Can you try to run BootlogXP on your machine and post the log you get so I can see what it is supposed to look like, please.

kryptic, I just got back to my office, so I back at messing with that computer. I tested my theory at being able to run other programs while waiting for explorer, and I could. They'd run just fine. I also tested another theory. While inside of Windows, in the task manager, I killed explorer and waiting a few seconds to see if Windows would restart it, it didn't, so I manually ran it (via File | Run), and I had the same timeout, 2 minutes, before explorer would come back up. This will make testing things easier as I don't have to wait for an entire reboot process. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Oh! Of course BillyBob. That is indeed a priority. Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge my request. I hope that the fates allow you the chance to carry out my request.

P.S. I hope things go well with your family get together.

electronerdz, I have the same situation as you with task manager. Except when I kill explorer.exe and start it from Task Manager there is no delay.

I tried and got the message that told me the file was too big.

As soon as I can get time I will try again. Which will more than likely be awhile as I just found out today that we have family coming from Georgia tomorrow for the Holidays. { 2 adults and 6 grandchildren.)
So I think I am going to be a bit busy.
And also with that many around I do not think it would be in my best interest to get into too much.

    Speaking of priorities
I still have to go shopping to get something for the Special person in my life.

    LOL
    I just heard the words

" Ya know what we forgot when we went shopping ? "
    Do I dare ask LOL

Nancy is calling for help so will say goodnight

    Good Morning.
I decided that before the house got too noisey I would take another look. Essentially I saw no different other than mine pointed to just one drive C:

    And no duplications.

    Where yours shows both.

Hmm....Well there has never been another XP install. And there is no other reference to G: other than in the BootLogXP log.

    One more time.
I believe the above and the below DIS-AGREE !
    TWO DIFFERENT INSTALLS/locations OF WINDOWS.

And again going over other logs that you have posted show the same thing.
