Do you have another ethernet cable to try? It's not even picking up the hub (Default Gateway).
With IPv6 now disabled, you may also want to try opening the Device Manager and uninstall the Network Adapter then reboot. It should automatically reinstall itself after logon.

Definately not the cable noahdfear, I can plug that into the back of the laptop and it works fine. I'll uninstall the NIC and see what happens, its an onboard as ive now removed the PCI one I installed a few days ago.

Ok - uninstalled the NIC, rebooted and it automatically installed - no pop up box as usual saying new hardware found. Device manager says that NIC is working fine. Still have limited or no connectivity though :(

This 3lb lump hammer is looking mighty tempting now, I have to admit

Maybe if I completely format the HD, reinstall Windows XP home (this version was put on by my neighbour, a hookey version of XP Pro apparently) as I have the COA, then start again ? Would that be a sensible thing to do ?

    Cheers,
    Olly

If that means it's not a valid copy, then by all means nuke and pave with a valid installation. We will not help with invalid operating systems.

It does indeed noah - let me reinstall a proper version of XP home tomorrow morning, and i'll relook at it - i'm kinda annoyed with my neighbour as I asked him to install XP home, I gave him my COA to validate etc etc

Thanks for all your help so far and i'll get back to you tomorrow

    Cheers,
    Olly

Noahdfear - just to update you.

I now have XP Home reinstalled on my PC, activated with my COA via the Microsoft Helpline - and still the same problem as before. It's installed with SP3, and ive now been told that the SP3 pack is corrupt, unable to install it from the PC.

Is there anything else we can possibly try to get to the bottom of this before I take a 3lb lump hammer to it and buy a new one ?

Cheers for all your invaluable help before

    Olly

You probably will need the hammer :)

I would start by replacing the network card, sounds like a hardware issue to me.

Sometimes we rush and overlook the obvious, so I'd like to make sure that when attaching the laptop via the same ethernet cable, you first disabled the wireless connection on the laptop. I would still recommend trying not only another cable, but a different port on the hub, if available.

    Hi Noahdfear,

Yup - I disabled the wireless connection, and connected via the cable, it even comes up as a cable connection rather than a wireless. Ive now come to the conclusion that it is a motherboard problem rather than anything else - im off to the shop to buy a new board, if this does not work would anybody like to buy a scrap PC that ive demolished with a 3lb lump hammer ? :D

    speak to you soon

    Olly
