    Marv,

If you still haven't been able to access Profile Manager, then do this:

Right click the Firefox Desktop shortcut
    Select: Properties
    Click on the "Shortcut" tab
    In the "Target" field: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe "

Add one space, and type: -profilemanager

The "Target" field will now look like this:

    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager

Let us know if this works.

    Marv,

This is weirding me out! I know that Firefox and Windows Vista are compatible, as many users have confirmed this.

    Try this:

Right click on the desktop and choose "Create new shortcut "
Use the "Browse" button and select:
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
(Assuming this IS the location of the Program execute file.)

    Click the "Next" button
    Type: Firefox Profile Manager
    Click: Finish

    Next:
Right click the Firefox Profile Manager shortcut, and select: Properties
The target field should look like, or be similar to this:
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe "
Add one space, and then: -profilemanager, or simply -p
The Target should now look like this:
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager
    Click OK
    Now:
Double click the "Firefox Profile Manager" shortcut
The Firefox Profile Manager should appear.

    Ramona,

Tried the latest suggestion, and when I click on the Profilemanager shortcut, it still brings up my earthlink home page just it did on the last suggestion. In my original downloading of Firefox I never checked to see if there was a Profile manager and it never asked me to set up a profile. My profile shows as default. When I completely uninstalled Firefox and then reinstalled from a new download, which included the latest updates there is no profilemanager option in Programs, Mozilla Firefox. I never checked for profilemanager after the last two updates to my original Firefox, but that is when the problem started. I have 2.0.0.6. The only common denominator is Vista, Earthlink Web Mail, Firefox. No problem using internet explorer and no problem using XP, webmail and Firefox at work. When looking for addresses to forward mail if I type in the first few letters it brings up closest addresses without a problem and if I just want to view addresses while not forwarding mail it brings them up with no problem. Only have problem when I click on email addresses when in Forward.

Close Firefox completely (select File > Exit from the main menu of Firefox).
Select Start > Run... from the Windows Start menu (use the search box on Vista).
Enter firefox.exe -ProfileManager and press OK.

Then create a "new" profile (as Ramona has suggested). Then see if the problem persists.

James, thanks for the reply. I already tried that and search cannot find it. At work now, but when I get home will try again and see what happens.

    Thanks,

If I go to Start/Programs/Mozilla Firefox... all I get is what you get: Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). But if I type into Run (and I suppose in your case since you have Vista: Search) the words: firefox.exe -ProfileManager and then click on OK it brings up my Profile Manager. Which allows me to Create, Rename or Delete my profile. Make sure there is a space between firefox.exe and -ProfileManager. It seems to make a difference.

Tried it again and got "No items match your search ". I am beginning to believe that it is not there.

It's there Marv, or you wouldn't be able to use the browser. Let me do some more research on Windows Vista, and see if there is something that is obvious, which we've missed.

Ramona, thanks, please keep posted and again thanks for all of your help, both now and in the past. Also, is it safe to periodically delete the XPC and the XUL mfl files in the profile while deleting the cache files? In Appl Data Mozilla Firefox there is a profile folder with the cache and these files. Does this have anything to do with the Profilemanager?

    Marv,

Yes, it is safe to delete both the XUL.mfl and XPC.mfl files located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Netscape\Navigator\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.profilename

When deleted, Firefox recreates them on the next startup. These are cache files for extensions (XUL) and components (XPC). I delete mine frequently, and no, they are not integrated with the Profile Manager.

Here is additional info I found so far:

Upgrading to Vista, Connecting With EarthLink
Is this how you access mail in Windows Mail?

    Ask Email Guy

I see your post, and Email Guy says:
Could be that your earthlink.net cookies are corrupt. I would delete ALL EarthLink cookies, close the browser, restart, then go to Web Mail and log in. New cookies should be created.

Always glad to help, Marv, altho in this particular instance, I don't seem to be succeeding!

    Ramona,

Thanks for info. Tried deleting my cookies, but unfortunately problem is still there. I may have to learn to live with re logging in to get to addresses. I do not use windows mail. Only use web mail.

    Marv,

Did you by chance try deleting your Password in Tools | Options | Security?

Have you tried setting up the Web Mail in Thunderbird? You can set up an IMAP Account, as well as POP Accounts:
    Using WebMail with Thunderbird
Perhaps this would avoid the double entry of your Password.

Hi Ramona, might take a look at your suggestion. Will continue to use earthlink web mail in Firefox for now. Will keep trying to find out what is causing the problem.

    Thanks,

    Marvin

    Marv,

I just went over the entire thread again, and when I gave you the guidelines for setting up a Profile Manager shortcut on the Desktop, you replied:
Did you close Firefox before clicking on the Profile Manager shortcut? You can't access Profile Manager if Firefox is open. In fact that applies to all Gecko browsers; Netscape, Mozilla, SeaMonkey, Firefox, and Thunderbird.

That's because your Profile remains untouched by updates, uninstall, and reinstall of the program. That's why the Profile Manager never came into play.

Here are a couple more thoughts:

    Close Firefox
Try the new Desktop shortcut with the -p added to the Target path

If no joy, then do this:

    With Firefox closed
Move the entire Firefox folder to your backup folder:
    Users\\Application Data\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

If you don't have a backup folder, then create one, e.g., C:\Backup, or whatever you want to call the folder. If you have no other browsers installed, i.e., Netscape, Mozilla, SeaMonkey, then move the entire Mozilla folder to the Backup folder:
    Users\\Application Data\Roaming\Mozilla

Start Firefox, and you will get the Import Wizard window.
    Select: Don't Import Anything.
Firefox will open to a new Profile. Now, go to the Earthlink Web Mail portal and see if the problem persists.

If the problem persists, then close Firefox
Open Windows Explorer and delete the new Profile:
    Users\\Application Data\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\xxxxxxxx.default

Open the Backup folder, and copy either the Mozilla, or Firefox folder you copied
Paste the file here: Users\\Application Data\Roaming
    OR
    here: Users\\Application Data\Roaming\Mozilla
Depending on which folder you moved.

Let me know if this isn't perfectly clear.

Ramona, the problem is solved. Thanks for your effort. You are correct all the times I tried to get to the profile manager Firefox was open. I went back followed your earlier instructions, closed Firefox and clicked on the modified desktop shortcut to Firefox and it brought up profile manager, created the new profile, went to web mail, went to forward a message, clicked on addresses, and they came up without me having to re-log on. Now is there a way to move my bookmarks, etc. to the new profile from my old default profile?

    Thanks,

    Marvin

    Marvin,

You can absolutely move all Profile data to the new Profile, and so glad I finally spotted the fact that Profile Manager opened in the browser Home Page. That always happens if the browser is open. Wahoo!

Copy these files from the OLD profile, to the NEW Profile, and allow Windows to overwrite the existing files:

    bookmarks.html
    cert8.db
    cookies.txt
    key3.db
    persdict.dat
    signons2.txt

    Copy the bookmarkbackups folder

Let us know if you have any further problems.
