Turning off automatic updates is not a fix it is a cop out. If there was nothing wrong with your netbook auto updates would not need to be switched off. Updates are very important to keep your netbook safe from security attacks. I am sure they have not had to do the same to all the netbooks they have sold.

Whatever the problem is in your netbook it is unlikely to improve and may well deteriorate and leave you with a useless machine.

I had a problem like that on a client a few months back, when a specific update was trying to install itself several times, and when trying to access Windows Update the computer BSOD'd. Heres what I did to fix it:

    1) Repaired .NET. If not up to date, update!
    2) Remove C:\windows\security\database\secedit.sdb (Holds securityinfo+info about all the updates installed.)
    3) Reboot computer.

I have found the website for emachines. They have email support, so I would suggest you email them with the history of your netbook and the fact that it will not run updates and that the shop (having changed ownership) switched off auto updates as a resolve to the problem.

As you still have a guarantee you may find some information in the Warranty section. The guarantee will be backed up by the manufacturer and they may instruct you to send it to a local authorised repairer.

There is a "Restore" facility in your system but you have to have it up and running to use it. You will find it in the list of programs (click Start and Programs) it is listed as "Emachine ". There is probably another way into this but I have not been able to find anything further. I suspect in the shop they plug in an external CD or hard drive and boot it up with that.

Now you are coping out like they did when they shut automatic updates off. GO TALK TO A MANAGER AND TELL THEM WHAT WAS DONE. I DON'T CARE IF THEY CHANGED HANDS 10 TIMES.

Ok thank you for all your opinions..i will email the website markmadras posted and see what i get back. Im also going to take it into my local computer tech as i said i would when i got it to work so he can have a look throught it! But i will send an email first and explain in as much detail as i can as to what is happening..Im sure by emailing the actual laptop company i am more likely to get help than to go and breath fire down someones throat at The store..as im no good at doing that.
