How about an update on how the computer is running now!

After the last steps it should be running much better.

    Any issues remaining?

    Good Job Rich

HJT log looks good now except for the following

    Remove the following in HJT.
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:8080

    For extra protection
    Download the protective host file
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip

Make a folder named MVP move zip there and extract zip

    Run mvps.bat and accept prompts

I think it best to do a final Virus/Malware check

    Download Dr. Web Cure-it:
    ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe

    Gdata Remover
    http://www.gdata.pl/~szczepionki/eng/download/remover.exe
Boot to safe mode and run

Then boot back to full report in for hopefully the last time on this group of issues.

mike, computer was running fine. Unfortunately, my son followed your previous posts ref norton/symantec & has done something wrong, to the point where windows will not start. Error message appears:- windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    \windows\system32 \config\system
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-rom.
select r at the first screen to start repair.

Haven't a clue what to do now!
I've put my XP cd in the drive & restarted my machine, but, the same error message appears.

    Hi TOG

I just go back from an errand and am to leave again in 1 hr. for another 3 hrs.

Glad I got this message now before anything else is done.

I reviewed the procedure and have no idea what he could have done but this error has to do with the registry.

These steps need to be followed carefully.

Put Windows cd in Drive reset the computer.

We want to start windows setup. It may give a message to hit a key to Boot from CD.

    Hit enter.

Windows will begin the setup program.

If it asks to repair windows with repair console say no!

    so click next/continue here

We are looking for setup to say it has found an existing Windows installation and ask if we wish to repair it. This is what we want to do.

If it does not stop here!

It will ask you to choose the installation even though there may be only one.

Select it and continue. It will take 30-40 minutes to finish from there.

WARNING: If it does not find the existing information and warns that a new installation will be done STOP there. and get back to me.

    Mike

    Mike,
It found an existing installation & is now repairing it.
Sorry about this, I know you have spent an awful amount of time on this problem already.

Ok, I'm back up & running, thanks. During the installation, a files needed window appeared & has appeared again, it reads:-
The file "Appoint.exe" on alps touch pad filter driver for windows 2000/xp setup disk is needed. type the path where the file is located.

    Any ideas?

Also, I'm unable to access my wireless connection from this laptop, which I'm looking in to

    Great Rich

Sorry I was later getting back than I anticipated.

No problem on the time spent.

The Point that it wants is not on the windows CD but on a ALPS driver disk.

    Ok!

First tell me if all else is OK. Emails Documents. Running good. Is anything NOT working?

Anything I might need to know.

Since we did the overlay/repair install we probably have corrected other problems and created a couple of minor ones that we can correct.

One of the first things is to do a windows update.

So tell me about the above then do a windows update.

    Mike,
Everything seems as it should, with the exception of the appoint.exe file I mentioned earlier & the fact I am unable to go online. Unfortunately, I am cluless about my wireless/online settings or how to set up! When I hover the mouse over the wireless icon a message appears "No supported wireless adapters available in the system "

    Morning Rich

To finish up we must get you back online.

Once we get you back online we need to visit the website of the mfg of your laptop and get all updates for your model.

This will get the Pointer .exe and the update for the wireless network card.

To do the above you will need to take the Laptop to the desktop pc and unplug the network cable there and plug it into the laptop.
    ===========================================
But first do this on the Laptop.
    Start-Run
    type
    devmgmt.msc
at top click view then Check Show Hidden devices

Then look for any items marked with a Yellow exclamation mark or Red X. If any rt click them and unistall them.

Then look for a category Unknown devices. If there click the + to open it. Now uninstall each ithem untill all are gone and even the Unknown Devices category itself is gone.

Now close all windows back to desktop and reboot.

    Do this before continuing below.

If this gets us connected we will not do all of below.

    ===========================================
We will use a cabled connection to connect to the internet get the updates we need to get the wireless back.

No need to turn off the desktop so you can plug it back in if you need to use it.

But the Laptop should be off when you plug in the cable.

So do that and see if you can make a connection.

If so go to Laptop Mfg site and find the section that deals with updates for your model.

Get back to me with the status on this.

    Mike

Rich what is the exact Brand and Model of this laptop. So that I may look it up on the Mfg web site.

Also go to System restore now and see if there are any restore points from right before this incident. If so try to restore to that point.

But first exact Brand and Model of this laptop

    Mike,
It is a Dell Inspiron 9300. Do you want the service tag number?
The only software I have found is either for my desktop or is of no use ie works, XP home edition reinstallation CD etc.
