    Download OTL to your Desktop.

    * Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    * Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

    * Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.

I really don't see much here.

    Delete broni.exe file.
Download fresh Combofix file, rename it BEFORE saving it to broni.exe.
Restart computer in Safe Mode and run it from there.

    Broni,

Combofix was uninstalled successfully. The computer was restarted normally.

Both browsers are still unable to show any webpages. There's no change from the way they were at the start of the problem. I think I'll try installing a different browser, such as Opera, and see what happens.

We're going to sign off for the night and aim at being back online ~10 AM (Eastern) tomorrow. Thank you for all the attention you're giving to this.

    Frank

    You're welcome :)

Whenever you have a chance, I want you to uninstall AVG, using AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools and Zone Alarm.
When you're done, make sure to turn Windows firewall on.
See how your browsers are doing.

Broni, before getting on to your new instructions I just want to let you know that we installed Opera and it has the same, exact problem that the other two browsers have. Needless to say, we uninstalled it immediately. We will get on to your latest instructions tomorrow.

    Success!

    Broni,

Good news! :) The laptop is back in operation!

We uninstalled AVG as you instructed and before uninstalling ZoneAlarm we rebooted and tried browsing in both FF and IE, and to our utter amazement, we were back on the Web!!! We were able to download Windows Updates and get e-mail too. Everything seems to be back to normal after 3 1/2 days.

As a final test, we reinstalled AVG 9 and rebooted. Surprise! Everything still works!

We don't know precisely what did the trick but we must assume that something you had us do had the desired effect -- for which we are extremely grateful!!! We certainly appreciate all the help you have given us.

    Excellent news :)
You're not the first person using AVG, which has been complaining about internet issues lately. Must be some of their latest updates.

Now, let's make sure, your computer is totally clean.

    1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

    2. Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

    1. Disable your active antivirus program.
    2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    4. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    5. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      [*] Archives
      [*] Mail databases
    6. Click on My Computer under Scan.
    7. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    8. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    9. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

Post fresh HijackThis log as well.

    Broni,

My friend says the following, "I'm of the 'if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it' school of thought. I really hate to hit a sleeping lion with a stick just to see what it might do. If AVG is starting to behave badly, then let's replace AVG. Right now my wife is happy (and VERY grateful), with the results and all she knows is that her computer is working, so I'm very reluctant to take it away from her again, at least this soon after restoring it for her, so that we can *do stuff* to it again. I fear she will react badly to that. "

I agree. Other than tidying up loose ends and maybe answering some lingering questions, is there anything material to be gained by running these further tests? I think the tests you already recommended have shown pretty conclusively that the problem was caused by something to do with the AVG program. My feeling is that all we need to do at this point is to permanently uninstall AVG and install (for example) Avast, which I have been using for some time on my own PC and really like. I felt AVG was getting too intrusive in setting itself up with no real means of turning some parts off (except by internal meddling with files and with difficulty), while Avast is generally regarded to be an excellent program and it lets you configure and turn it on or off as you like. I appreciate your concern but I would like to decline runnning these tests if at all possible.

    Thank you,
    Frank

Combofix removed some baddies, so I strongly suggest, we finish, what we started.

Broni, we ran the TFC program, restarted the computer, went to the Kaspersky website and did the online antivirus scan as prescribed (after AVG had been uninstalled, because there's no way to turn it off) twice. Why twice? Because the first time there were no results shown in the report. The second time through, there were also no results, just a blank report window. Running these two tests, including downloading all the virus updates, took about four and a half hours.

I'm convinced that we're done. I'm going to oversee the installation of Avast on this machine and then turn it over to my friend. I appreciate all your help through this ordeal.

Before you do this, make sure to reset system restore:

    - Windows XP:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check "Turn off System Restore ".
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    - Windows Vista:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
    4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
    5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
    6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C: ")
    7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
    8. Click OK

    Restart computer.

    Turn System Restore on.

Broni, have done so. Also installed Avast, which is working nicely, and rebooted again. Turned ownership of laptop over to friend. All is functioning well now. :)

Many thanks to you and the experts on this BBS, which I think is the best on the Web (that's why I keep coming back).
