    Hello,
I'm trying to get my lan drivers loaded on a new harddrive with xp pro sp3 on it.. I'm downloading from another computer and transfering to the new one. It says I need service pack 2 installed and the xp pro I have is sp 3. So I'm wondering if this is the cause of my problems getting it loaded..
Sorry if this is the wrong place for this I have a hard time with this site..
    Thank you,,
    Bernie

Your specifications are not showing in your user profile yet.

Try getting updated chipset drivers from the motherboard (system) manufacturer's website. Is that where you got the LAN drivers? That is where I suggest you get them from.

The two other options I can see, go to the manufacturer of the LAN adapter's website and get the latest drivers for your model there or unless your disk is SP3, uninstall SP3 and go back to SP2 until new drivers are released.

Thanks Matt, Yes I went to the hp website and found the lan drivers for my actual system.
When I try to load them on the new harddrive it wants to put them on c drive, which is listed as a removable drive the harddrive is actually H. It tells me there's not enough space on c and to clear up some room.. and there is no way to change where it wants to install it. I did notice it said sp2 needs to be installed and my os is sp3 so I guess that could be the problem..
    Thanks again for the suggestions.

I think you need to find out why the drives seem strange. Do you have any external drives? Maybe even a printer with card readers.

The HP system will work on Windows being on the C: drive. Since you have only recently installed the Windows, don't be afraid to overwrite it and start again. You want to have the system set up correctly now and not have to reinstall some time later when it could be inconvenient.

    Thanks Matt,
Yes I have a couple of external's, and several different card reader's built in.,
And I partitioned the new hard drive into two partitions.

The drivers for the LAN adapter on that comp come in a packed exe file. Run the exe and immidiately check the %systemdrive%\documents & settings\your-username/local settings/temp directory. The installer probably unpacks the drivers there. Copy the fplders/files from that dir to the desktop BEFORE the installer quits. (it usually will delete the unpacked files on a failed install) Best to empty that temp dir prior to doing this, it will make the files easier to find. Once copied, go to device manager > network adapter > update driver > browse to the copied files.

If this is a new install be sure to download and install the chipset drivers BEFORE installing any hardware:

Are you happy with Windows being installed on the H: drive? I have seen card reader drives taking C:, D:, E:, F: G:, etc. Your HDD doesn't seem to be set as the primary boot drive. You have partitioned the HDD, the HP installation system might not support partitioning of the HDD. I always get the drives "sorted out" before installing Windows, I don't want card reader drives as primary (boot scanned) drives. Try to set Windows system on C: or leave it on H:, your choice. I know where I would like to have it.

I have made that mistake only just recently when I did a new install of XP and I had left by mistake a USB stick in the back of the case and Windows made my USB stick for that computer C:\ and the HDD that had the OS installed E, I think I have to be honest I did not like it as certain items are automatically looking for C and I had the same situation with Windows telling me that there is not enough space on C or when it was not connected that it can not find C.
I formatted and reinstalled this time without the USB stick.
