First, I will state what I have done to troubleshoot before I list the problem.

YES, I restarted the computer. It's a brand new keyboard that was working fine until a cat started laying on it while my son was using it. My son tells me something was updating when it happened, but doesn't know what. I tried swapping out keyboards and the problem persists. I do not believe it is a keyboard problem, but is something to do with the OS. I tried getting into safe mode, but the problem blocks out all key inputs except what it is doing.

    And now, the problem...

Upon start up there is a continuous string of keystrokes. Tried to change the password, all I got was spaces, as if you were holding down the spacebar.

Hi behill75, Welcome to WindowsBBS :)
First, get rid of the cat. (joking) It sounds like too many keys were being pressed by the cat while the comp was active! Who knows what new code has been inputed?
Without keyboard input I can't think how you are going to get to do a repair/Recovery or Restore.
My only suggestion would be try your original OS CD/DVD.
Don't despair as someone with more knowledge on this problem may stop and help. Neil.

Thanks. I have a friend who does this stuff for a living, but can't afford to pay him and he is out of town. Here's to hoping this can be fixed.

Hi behill75, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Can you boot into your user profile? If you can have a look at the suggestions here, How to Reset a Keyboard.

If you can't boot into your user profile because the keyboard doesn't work then try this suggestion, How to Use the On-Screen Keyboard in Windows 7 & Windows 8.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

It figures, forgot to check and make sure, my son said he unplugged the old keyboard...he didn't and something was sitting on top of it. I feel sheepish now (trust but verify). Thanks everybody.

So does the keyboard work properly then?
