    Mr. Bill-

I now undersand your earlier message. Java was down so would not download!! OK that is what started me on this road to begin with. I may not bother with it at all.

Hopefully next year I will be able to get a new computer before XP is not serviced. But I am working on the links to get my computer running better now and resolve some issues. Half way thru them.

    Thanks,

    MonaJ

You are looking at the Mem Usage column. I need the process using the higher percentage under the CPU column when the PC slows down. If the CPU is jumping to 96% when connected but not using it then it could be something is checking for an update or trying to download. It could be Microsoft Update or another program that is allowed to update itself, such as Flash, Java and etc.

It can range from 4% to 100%. OK I clicked on CPU twice and it was 100% and it was iexplorer. There are three processes running for ie and two have very high memory usages. IS this normal to have three processes running for internet explorer?

    Check out the following link.

I have three internet explorer exe running in my task manager

With IE8 on my XP SP3 system open to just my home page I have 1 explorer.exe and 2 iexplore.exe. With my home page open along with WindowsBBS in another tab I have 3 iexplore.exe running. None of them were registering any usage in the CPU column. Make sure of the names iexplore.exe or explorer.exe. You could have an add-on such as a toolbar calling home. Toolbars can be malicious. Also running torrent programs can cause multiple instances of IE to be running in the background grinding your system to a halt.

I am going to check out the link. I currently have the following on my Task Manager:
    iexplorer.exe 101,464K usage
    iexplorer.exe 31,424 K
    explorer 51,980K
    iexplorer.exe 131,9808 K

It is a lot of usage. I wonder if more than one internet explorer is running? Sometimes websites say that I am running Internet Expl 7, but I am actually running 8.06? Any input would be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    MonaJ

Maybe a trip to the Malware section would do you some good. Not saying you have any, but Broni is good at what he does and this will "maybe" solve some of your problems.

Hi Monaj, I see you have Symantec (Nortons SS) running. My experience with Symantec was that it was a complete Resource Hog.
My comp got clogged with Norton 2002/2006. When I tried to install Norton IS 2007, it wouldn't finalize the install.
I contacted Symantec Support and one of their Techos took 3.5 hrs. on Remote Control cleaning out their c---p!!! I finally uninstalled Symantec and cleaned out all entries in the comp and installed MSE.
    Problem fixed.
If your slow operation continues, I would respectfully suggest you try MSE as your AV software. Neil. ;)

I agree with Neil as well. I've never been a fan of Norton since its always caused issues on the machines that I have removed it from.

Anyway Monaj, how is the progress on my instructions that I posted going? Have you ran AdwCleaner, the Junkware Removal Tool and Hijackthis yet?

    CPU Usage 0%

This freshly installed XP Home SP3 PC runs a Semprom 3100+ w/ 1GB of memory. IE8 opens to Google as a home page and I have WindowsBBS open in another tab. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials on it. This is normal behavior.

When is the last time you ran Disk Cleanup and defragged in Safe Mode? I occur with the others that Norton is a major resource hog. I would never use any anti-virus program offered my my Internet provider for free. MSE is fine as long as you understand that is isn't ranked right up there with the best. You are the one who controls your surfing habits and no matter what anti-virus is installed you can still get infected. For the inexperienced the best free AV product at the moment seems to be Avast.

BTW. HijackThis is dead and should remain so.

Evan- I will finish up today with your instructions, I have been battling bronchitis thus the I am behind. I am up to the junkware and adwcleaner portion. Norton does cause problems and malfunctions a lot, I also have the Norton Safe Web where it scans the web. I may get rid of it after I finish the cleaning.

WHiskeyman-Duly noted on Norton. I also found when looking at Manage Add-ons, some entries from Acatel-Lucent a while lot of them in the "run without permission section" such as MCCISysSecurityCtrClass etc a lot of files and I disabled all of them. I am not sure what this is. I have not defragged and cleaned disk in safe mode. Will do it. Just got a warning about High Memory usage as well. I have 2 GB of ram installed.

    Evan-
I completed the list however #12 would not run ( "not recognized as internal or external command ").. I chose not to run Junkware Removal Tool(I will if you say it is safe). 39 Processes running in Task Manager, Norton Security Suite, IE 8.06, Adobe Flash Player 11, No Java Installed on computer. Video Card: I am not sure how to find this Legacy maybe? please advise. Seems a little faster overall.

Alright thanks for the logs. You can run the Junkware Removal Tool, it is safe to use.

In Hijackthis select the following checkboxes:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Kernel and Hardware Abstraction Layer] KHALMNPR.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMAXPnP] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\Core\smax4pnp.exeO4 - HKCU\..\Run: [EPSON WorkForce 500 Series] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_FATIEQA.EXE /FU "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\E_S6C.tmp" /EF "HKCU"

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Akamai NetSession Interface] "C:\Documents and Settings\Mona\Local Settings\Application Data\Akamai\netsession_win.exe"

Then click on the Fixed Checked button to remove those items from startup.

After that is done click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and remove the Akamai NetSession Interface from your machine if it is listed.

Would you be interested in removing Norton Internet Security and replacing it with a better alternative?

To see what video card your computer has right click on the desktop and click on Properties. Then click on the Settings tab. On the Settings tab click on the Advanced button. After that click on the Adapter tab and under Adapter Type tell me what video card is listed.

Alright cool, we are making progress.

For your video driver download and install the latest version from this link, Nvidia ForceWare Release 90 Driver.

After the driver has installed reboot the computer then click Start< Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Norton Internet Security and any other Norton entries. Once that is done download and run the Norton Removal Tool.

After the Norton Removal Tool has finished, reboot the machine and then you can install either Avast Antivirus or Microsoft Security Essentials as a replacement.

Give me an update with how the machine is running.

I tried it again and successfully downloaded, however, I cannot seem to verify if it has the updated version? My computer is responding much faster now. Monaj
