When you post anything with the colon ( : ) inserted, i.e., about:config, about:plugins, etc., you need to enable the "Disable smilies in text" option just below the Message field, in "Additional Options ". That way you won't be sticking your tongue out at anyone! :D

Ha, Ha. Okay, so that's the trick for not being so smiley!

    sir gerald,

about:plugins is the "website" that shows you the plugins Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape have.

The plugins folder I think is Program Files\Moxilla Firefox\Plugins.

And Ramona is right about the files not necessarilly needing to be in the Plugins folder, and I recall that Firefox automatically used some plugin's without them being in the Plugins folder. However it has been mentioned by some folks that at times Java doesn't quite click with the newer versions unless you manually put those NP files Ramona listed (basically it's anything that starts with NP in the Java folder) into the Plugins folder yourself.

I don't know why it's not working for you even with them all listed in about:plugins, but it wouldn't be the first time. Try copying those files in there and see what happens. Also, make sure Java is enabled in the browser preferences.

You are right. There is no need for the plugin .dlls to be present in the FF folder, as long as they are listed in about: plugins. I am pretty sure that they needed to be copy/pasted for NS7.2 and Mozilla1.7.x to work, but I never checked the folder. I have pasted file NPOJI610.dll in the Firefox1.0.4 folder, for old time's sake.

Well ... I copied the .dll files frm the Netscape/plugins folder to the Firefox/plugins folder and it still doesn't work.

This has got to be the most annoying computer problem I've ever had.

? Question ... when you do download Firefox, does it come with the plugins ?
In other words ... let's say I didn't have Java installed on my system.
If I were to install Firefox, would it have the Java plugins ?

No it doesn't come with plugins, but when it installs it does a plugin detection that detects Acrobat Reader, Flash, Java, and Windows Media Player. I think it may use the plugin files directly from the particular plugin's folder in this case. That's how come the files appear in about:plugins without actually being in the Firefox Plugins folder.

When installing on a clean system I usually only have Windows Media Player and the .reg file that puts a ShimInclusionList entry into the registry for WMP9, 10 to include Firefox for embedded media installed before installing Firefox. Then I run the Microsoft Application Compatibility Tool and create a fix to LoadLibraryCWD when running Firefox (fixes Shockwave). Then I install all the plugins. Then I run the Windows Media Player 10 (or 9 on 9x) setup file again to fix whatever all the plugin's and media players broke in WMP.

I can't fathom why after uninstalling the old Java, installing the new one, and taking the additional step of copying the plugins over your Java isn't working. If you want to have another go at it, try deleting the Java folder after uninstalling Java and rebooting. Then reboot again after deleting the folder and before installing the latest Java. I would also delete those plugin files you copied over to the Plugin folder before reinstall as well.

If you have a registry cleaner/finder like jv16powertools2005, that might assist you as well. If after uninstalling stuff its list still has the products listed, you can tell it to remove them and it will safely delete the specific product's registry entries. Cool tool.

If that still won't work, I might want to start with a clean uninstall of Firefox including the Mozilla registry entry and your profile folder. Uninstall all the media players and plugins as well (Java included). Sweep everything out. (Except of course Windows Media Player, but I would reinstall that over itself after you're done installing everything.) Then reinstall all of it starting with Firefox. Reboot between every install and close all programs except your Firewall before running any installation. Especially make sure you disable your virus scanner.

If that doesn't work, it's time to format the hard drive and remove all hardware except for your monitor, keyboard, mouse, and videocard. Make sure you have your motherboard chipset drivers and up to date drivers for all your hardware before you begin. Save anything you want to keep on cdr's. Install Windows, motherboard drivers, and all your other hardware. Get all the Windows Updates. Reboot between everything. If you run any Word Processing stuff (like Word, Works) install that and update it on Office Update. Then give Firefox and the plugins their turn. They'll work then.

Something in your registry might be messing with Java. A clean start might be the only way to fix it if uninstall, reinstall won't do it.
