Solved Is my computer infected or just getting old?

    Reset Internet Explorer.
    Go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 and run "FixIt" procedure.
    You can use ANY browser to download "FixIt" file.
    Make sure you follow ALL steps listed there.

    Let me know if it works better.

    Thanks, broni, for that link. I did do a reset via the fixit file. Can't say I really notice any significant difference?

    But at least I know my computer is clean and I do have a laptop (with Windows 8 on it) and if I or my husband get too impatient we use that one.

    I think the worst "not responding" happens when we visit facebook using my desktop computer, so I'm thinking it has something to do with their website and using an older browser and/or OS?? As it seems to work fine with my laptop.
