Awwwwww shoot Mudd! I'm sorry I missed this post! Tell us you didn't have to give up "your" computer? :D

How're things going? I too think that tech you spoke to was taking the easy way out?

I haven't given up - Dell may have! I have sent and received several letter to them. So far they have answered promptly and given me things to do to try and solve the problem. The last one was yesterday and it didn't work either. I wrote back and so far no response.

They said I should do a Repair, later to do a Reinstall, and yesterday I should do a "register Urlmon.dll" and instructions on how to do it. That didn't work either

Going to wait another day before I scream at them again. I believe they are at a loss as to what to do next.

If I weren't so old and numb-headed I'd experiment on my own. I'm very timid as concerns changing things on the PC.

Thanks for asking and remembering me and my problem.

    Hi Mudd
Speaking of re-registering your URLmon.dll.......did you run through the list and re-register as I posted them?

You did infact find the hosts file and rename it?

I don't think that is the case. I'm following their instructions. I think I'm doing a "Repair," at least that what it indicates.

This morning I got an additional letter from Dell that instructs me to do a "Repair Install." Gave me the instructions, etc. I'm at a dead end now as it wants me to give a "password" before doing this. As far as I know we didn't enter any passwords when we first set up. Just Grouch and I here. Why put in a password.

Anyway, I'm at a dead end now because the Repair Install won't go because I won't put in a password and I don't have one to put in! How's that for a dead end?

My last post doesn't appear. Lost along with me I assume.

The password request appears after I boot with the Repair CD. I have XP Home. After three guess on a password, it restarts and want the password again. Don't have one. I'm the one that set the PC up for Grouch the day it arrived. I know I didn't put a password in. So, if I didn't, and it asks for one before it will do whatever it is trying to do, what will break the standoff?

As I said earlier, I'm pretty much lost as to the whys and wheres, just following instruction hoping for the best.

Can you by-pass that bugger by rebooting and holding the shift key?

Don't know. I'll sure try. I can't call because of my being deaf. Grouch is gone for the day. She usually does the talking then points or does her sign work.

You are going to a lot of trouble trying to help me. Why don't you just forget about it and help someone that is help-able! I'm a lost cause I think, especially without my ears for some telephone work.

I'm going now to try that. This particular window comes up after I make my selection to "repair install" and is on one of those DOS look alike windows where I have chosed to do a certain thing, as in this case chosen "R" for the repair. Then I have selected "1" as the repair option as given in the letter from Dell. That's when it wants my password. I will try your suggestion.

I think you just answered your own question. You don't want to hit "R ".....I believe you want to hit enter!

The instructions are: Select "R" to repair install. Then select from below which system you want to repair install. Well, there is only one there, it's C/Windows, and it's numbered 1. Then, I'm to enter my selection at the blinking cursor which I do as "1" Then I'm to click enter which I do. That is when the Enter your/Administrator Password comes in.
