Okay, that is what I thought. Thanks for the explaination. I didn't do that with IE 5 or IE 6 and they don't have any for IE 4 b/c it is so old. They recommend to anyone who is using IE 4 to upgrade. However, I am about to download and install IE 6 again and will definitely check for all critical updates for IE 6.

    Good plan.
It's imperative that the critical updates are done..as Billy's forever patching bugs and holes that crop up. Hence why you were vulnerable to some of those viruses.

And don't forget to do as Kevin has suggested and dump your temp files.

Thank you Kevin for that link. I did exactly what Tony T posted and still no luck!

I have reinstalled IE 6 and the same thing is happening. Both priestsforlife.org and gymboree.com are shutting down before loading completely. Since they are closing I didn't try the other 3 websites. I tried turning off cookies before going to the websites and it didn't help. I am about to download a critical updates package. Let's hope it helps b/c this is beginning to drive me crazy! :)

Well, I have all the critical updates and IE 6 is still closing down all the web sites as before, cookies or no cookies. I will try belarc.com and let you know how that goes. I am beginning to think I am destined to use IE 4 until we can buy another computer. :)

Thanks for the advice on belarc.com!

    Belarc.com

I have downloaded the belarc advisor and it has given me a profile summary. What output did you want me to post? And what are product keys? I apologize for my ignorance. :)

They're the numbers listed beside the software.

Post it all. (Minus the product keys) Who knows....maybe we can pick out something we've missed?

Maybe now would be a good time for you to enlist some help from a relevant newsgroup such as:

It was worth a try anyway. Thanks for all the help with the computer viruses! I have posted twice over on Microsoft's community newsgroup and no answer so far.

Are these the same programs you've always had.....or have you cleaned out some of them recently?

    BHO Cop got me wondering.

Yes, I have deleted some programs I had downloaded as a free trial. Not sure if I really understand what the BHO Cop is...do you think it is worth a try?

    Actually...at this point..anything's worth a try?
Being that you got infected.....I'm making the assumption that you probably have/had "enable install on demand" checked under internet options. As such, it's more than possible that one of these so-called browser enhancers got installed.

    Daizy

Oops.......forgot to tell you what BHO's are.

Here's a few (clutching at staws) things to try. I doubt that any will work but you might as well try!

    1) Try the steps described here.

    2) Use BHOCop (as per Daizii's suggestion).

    3) Visit this page.

    4) Make sure that you have the most recent driver installed for your video card.

    5) Try reducing hardware acceleration (right-click on a blank area of your desktop - click Properties - Adavanced - Performance and decrease using the slider). If you have an ATI card, add the line "DevBMP=0" (without the quotes!) to the [Display] section in the system.ini file.

    6) Make sure that you have the most recent version of DirectX installed.

    7) Use Find Files and Folders to look for anything contained the text "Tracker Class ". If you have any hits, post back.

    8) Try switching to Sun's version of Java (see this thread).

    9) Download and unzip this file. Rename the text file so that it has a .reg extension and then double-click the .reg file to merge into your registry.

    10) Go to My Computer - View - Folder Options - File Types.

Scroll down to the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocols, click Edit twice and make sure the following is in the application used to perform action box:

    "C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome

    The same applies for URL:Gopher

DDE should be set to: "%1 ",,-1,0,,,,
    Application should say: IExplore
DDE application not running should be blank
    Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL

Run through the "regsvr32" commands again (mentioned earlier in this thread).

    11) Download a copy of F-Prot for DOS, unzip to C:\FSI and then run a scan from DOS as per these notes:

Start (or Restart) the PC in DOS mode.

    At the C:\ prompt, type:

    CD:\ (return)
    CD FSI (return)
    F-PROT (return)

You'll get a screen which shows the available functions. You can use the arrow keys to move around the screen, and press the "Enter" key when you want to select an action.
    Scan
    Options
    Information
    Quit
When [Scan] is selected, you get a menu where you can specify where to search for viruses, and what to do when a virus is found. See the file SCAN.TXT for further information.

When [Options] is selected, you get a menu where you can enable or disable various options. To change an option, move the red line over it, using the arrow keys and press <ENTER>.

When [Information] is selected you get a list of several subjects you can select to get more detailed information about the program.

Finally, selecting [Quit] will terminate the program.

Thanks Brett for all of your time and help!

Everything was fine with all the commands in the May Not Open Window directions. Although I am not sure how to know whether the .dll files have been damaged?

No parasites detected on my browser.

I have decreased the hardware acceleration.

No hits for "Tracker Class ".

I downloaded BHO Cop, installed it, and nothing seems to happen. The BHO Cop box is empty when I open it. Does this mean I have no BHOs on my computer?

I downloaded and unzipped the file you recommended, renamed it and double clicked it, however, I received an error saying it wasn't a registry script and I can only import registry files. What have I done wrong?

I don't think I even have Direct X installed. What is this?

How do I tell if I have the correct driver installed for our video card? Hubby says we do, but I had better check myself if you can help me figure out how to tell.

    Working on the rest....

    Amy

When going into File Types under My Computer, this was what was in both the URL Hypertext Transfer Protocols & URL: Gopher

    "C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome

    DDE "%1 ",,-1,0,,,,

    I changed that to what you recommended ( "C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
& DDE should be set to: "%1 ",,-1,0,,,,)
and now I have 2 URL Hypertext Transfer Protocols file types and only 1 URL:Gopher. Should I have left the original instead of changing it to what you recommended?

Let's leave those entries as they are (for now) and run the .reg file instead. To do this, double-click the unzipped .txt file to open it and then (in Notepad or whatever application has opened the file) click on File - Save As. Change the File Name to "url.reg" (without the quotes) and set Save As Type to "Text Ducuments ". Now click Save and then double-click on the newly created .reg file.

The latest version of DirectX (and you will have a version installed!) is 8.1. To check which version is already installed, click Start - Run and type "DXDIAG" (without the quotes).

    Brett, you are a GENIUS!!

I downloaded (took forever) and installed Sun Java and IE 6 works perfectly!!! That must have been the problem (and why IE 4 worked with the Java we had at the time).

Hooray Hooray!! Thank you so much! You have no idea how grateful I am for all of your time and effort! I have learned so much it is almost overwhelming. LOL! Thanks again!

    Blessings,
    Amy

PS~I clicked Start - Run and type "DXDIAG" (without the quotes) and I received an error saying it couldn't find it, to make sure all filenames and pathways are correct and all available libraries are available. Is this bad??

No! With older versions of DirectX, DxDiag was located in C:\Program Files\DirectX\Setup (which meant that it couldn't be easily accessed via Start - Run). However, with DirectX versions 7 onwards, DxDiag was relocated to C:\Windows\System (which meant that it could be easily accessed via Start - Run). I'm, therefore, going to hazard a guess that you have a pre-7 version installed. This can easily be confirmed - navigate to C:\Program Files\DirectX\Setup and double-click the DxDiag icon. The DirectX version will be listed under the System tab. Make the upgrade if you have anything other than 8.1 installed.

Glad the other problem is fixed - even though I'm not really sure why it's fixed :D
