Internet Explorer hiding on me

    Copy the files from the dllcache to system32. If Windows says they are already there replace them. Then register the files as given in the article posted by Zander - post #11.

    Past midnight this side of the pond - time for some shuteye. Catch up with you in the morning - my morning that is :)

    Good morning all!

    Well, this is really baffling me now. I copied the files from the dllcache to system32, and still no IE (the files still won't register; same message as before about not finding the module). I then removed and reinstalled SP2, and still no IE. I even tried sfc for the fifth time in three days, and still IE refuses to work. If there is no other fix out there to get IE to operate, is a repair install of the OS in my future?

    Baffles me too :) This is a longish shot ....

    Checked back on your first post on 16th April - you said 'recently noticed ... - how recently? There was an update from via Windows Updates on Patch Tuesday 11th April which has caused some problems with IE when other specific software was installed on the system.

    How does the 11th fit in with 'recently' and do you have Automatic Updates enabled? If you have just reinstalled SP2 no doubt you have also applied all the subsequent patches?

    Look in Add/Remove programs (check 'Show Updates' at the top of the page) and scroll down to KB908531 and uninstall it. See if that solves your problem, although it is not specifically documented.


    You may experience problems in Windows Explorer or in the Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015
    Maybe, but no guarantee that it would solve the problem as you have already effectively reinstalled IE 6 by installing SP2.

    Hi Pete,

    IE hasn't been working since about the beginning of March (which is what prompted me to try the Firefox browser). But before I try the repair install of XP, I'll try your suggestion. It couldn't hurt.

    Well.....

    I tried removing the 908531 update, and I have the same problem. So, I thought that I would try a repair install of XP (which went flawlessly, by the way). I also re-installed SP2 from the CD, and all of my updates (that I keep on another CD-I have dialup). And when I opened IE (drum roll, please)......................

    The same thing happened. IE is still broken.:confused:

    If I want IE, I may have no choice but to format and start fresh, but I reeeealy don't want to do that.....:(

    Still somewhat baffled and can think of/find no obvious solution :( A format and reinstall should, in theory solve the problem, but is a lot or work and in the worst case scenario would not resolve the problem.

    If you really want IE consider downloading Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 If it doesn't work it can be uninstalled through Add/Remove programs, reverting back to IE 6.

    Hello Pete,

    I did try IE7 (see earlier in the thread), which did the same thing as IE6. Nothing. That's why I tried IE7, because I figured that if I loaded a brand new browser in my computer, it would work. But it must be using files/settings from the embedded IE6, which gives me the same problem; a white page full of nothing.

    Well, for what it's worth, my system runs a bit better now that I did the repair install.:rolleyes: I'm not using IE right now; I'm bouncing back and forth between MSN and Firefox. But I just like things on my system to work, whether I'm using them or not. And this is really bugging me that I can't get IE to work.

    Just a quick thought:

    Are there any settings within the browser that may have caused this problem? File, Edit, View, Tools, etc.? Is there anything really, really simple that I'm overlooking here? At this point I'll try anything!

    Well folks,

    I've tried everything that was suggested to try. Since I did the repair install of XP, SP1. and all of my updates, all of my files have successfully reregistered. I thought that maybe I had it licked, and when I went to open IE.....

    Nothing.:(

    The same problem exists. A blank page, with the arrow/hourgalss icon looking back at me as if to say, "you can't fix me...nyeh, nyeh...

    All the headers and toolbars are there, but it just will not respond to anything I do to it.:confused:

    I'm hauling out the heavy artillery. Here is the "hijackthis" log of my computer. Hopefully, this will bring something to the surface.

    Eureka!!!!! IE is back!!!!!

    Good Evening All,

    I am now posting to you through the courtesy of Internet Explorer.

    Yes, Internet Explorer!:D

    It seems that in the "hijackthis" log that I just posted to you a few minutes ago, I quickly read it, and I found something that I would not have expected to be in there. About the beginning of March (approximately the time that I lost IE), I tried a download manager program called Fresh Download. It didn't work for me, so I uninstalled it, and cleaned up the stray entries using CCleaner. I thought I got every entry. I guess that I didn't.....:eek:

    Uopn quick review of the log, I noticed that there was a stray entry for that program...I removed it, rescanned, I saw that it was gone, restarted IE on a lark, and there it appeared...IE, in all its glory, loading my home page like nothing ever happened. And if it wasn't for this group, I never would have known enough to use a program like "hijackthis ". And I have a nice, fresh install of XP to enjoy for a while!

    Thanks to all who provided your valuable time and expertise in helping me fix this problem (particularly PeteC, Zander, mattman, and Miz). I hope that I will gain enough knowledge from this group to return the favor.
