Internet connection to Hughes Net

Hi Everyone,
I wondered if anyone could help me with the problem I'm having?

I have the Hughes Net Sat internet connection (live in the country). I have the 7000S modem from Hughes Net connected via Dlink router for my house. I purchased a USB +24 dbi Yagi Antenna in order for my niece, (who lives a block from me) to bounce off my Hughes Net Server. Both of us have xp laptops. How do we make this thing work (in detail) because we have "monkeyed" with this thing for 2 days and still can't get it to work. I've also purchased a Linsksy router for her pc as well. Ideally, we would like for her pc to pick up my signal via the Linksky router and get better signal strength via the Yagi Antenna.

Any help???

1. By block (blocks can be short or very long) what is the distance in miles quarter half ?

2. Is it flat or line of sight (can you see her house) to her home and are there trees and other obstructions in the way

3. While she is at your home can she connect to the Internet?

4. If she can connect and it is only a block have you walked her Laptop down the street to see how far the signal is getting?

I think you may need to put an identical Antenna on her house and point them at each other.

We have the antenna at her house pointing toward my house. Still cannot connect from her house.

How have you connected the Yagi antenna ? You say its USB. Can you explain further.

For signals to travel further you need a high gain antenna at both the ends which should be connected to a wifi router.

The scenario goes something like this:

Modem -> Router -> wifi [with high gain antenna at your end ] -> wifi [with high gain antenna at your niece end] -> computer.

 

So, I need to purchase another antenna for my house???

 

Oh gee, didn't finish answering all your questions! Yes, the connection cable on the end of the Yagi antenna is a USB connection which is supposed to plug into her laptop, but she doesn't want to be tied to one spot trying to use her pc, ie, reason for trying the Linksky router in her home.

 

Antenna into USB ? Who sold you this ? Its not going to work

 

Oh No! then this is of no value to accomplish our result?? I explained in detail what/how/where prior to buying this antenna.

What do we need to do to accomplish this action??

 

Are you saying she gets 12% from her home without the antenna?

Does this stay the same when she plugs up the antenna?

RSINFO is correct to be wireless at her home and use the Antenna she would need to connect it to the Router. Problem is I know of no router that will accept a USB antenna.

If she has 12% signal to the Laptops internal antenna (which are not all that great) then I think a good Router with extended range or dual antennas (on the router) would likely solve your problem.

Well, we only get the 12% with the USB antenna connected into her pc.(Same as without the antenna) But, when we plug the Linsky only in, it shows a signal strength of 82%, yet we still cannot connect to the internet.

Does any of this make sense????

 

What you need is a pair of high gain RF antenna may be dish antenna depending on your topology.

Next you need 2 wifi routers. Search around & see if they have those new ones which claim to work up to 200 mtrs. in the open. The wifi router must have a detachable antenna so that you can detach the inbuilt antenna & use your high gain antenna. Set these things at both the ends, at maximum possible height and clear of all obstructions [wall, ceilings, doors etc.]

At your end, connect cable from your router into LAN port of the wifi router.

At the other end, connect the computer to the LAN port through a cable.

Thats the theory.

You would have to configure both the wifi routers at either end for security & DHCP.

What is this Linksys ? Is it a wifi router? Where is it installed ? At your place or your niece's ?

Forget about the USB antenna & return it if you can.

Is your router hooked up all the time?

Then when you hook up a router at her home you get 82% signal?

If so you have no "signal problem" as this is enough to make a connection. You have a network setup problem at least on her end!

So she can connect wirelessly at your home!

So from her home with router at 82% when she searches for networks she does not find your router?

So answer these questions!

Linksky Router is installed at her house into her pc. I suppose it is wifi.

 

It is a wifi.

The problem is that the Linksys is not getting internet signals from your house. If we can somehow connect the Linksys to your house, everything would be fine.

 

ok..yes, my router is hooked up all the time as it is plugged into my Hughes Net modem which is active at all times. Yes, Linksky router at her house is 82%. Yes, she can connect from my house without anything additional.
How do I need to set up the networking?
See, I don't understand, because the principle should be the same as being in a hotel and picking up the hotel's wireles connection without doing anything to your pc....should find the open net connection.

 

How could I connect her Linksky to my house?????

 

How does she connect in your house ? Through cable or wirelessly ?

 

The router at her home has to be "WIFI" if it reports 82% signal!

Since as you say you live in the country it is likely your signal she is getting so does it give a Connection name when she searches for available net works?
