I have a Dell Inspiron running Win XP Home reinstalled about a year ago but hardly used since the network card will not hold it's Internet connection when activated i.e. running on mains supply, when I go to battery & deactivate the card the connection is OK

    I'm confused ....
How are you connecting to the Internet - dialup or DSL/cable - wired or wireless?

If disabling the NIC enables your internet connection you are clearly not using the NIC.

    Possibly a hardware conflict?

Do you use ethernet at all, if not you can disable it.

When your NIC is enabled have a look in device manager...

    Start->Run

Type "devmgmt.msc" without the quotes in the Open: box and click OK

And look for any ! or ? under Network adapters (or anywhere else).

If you never use your NIC you can disable it there as well.

If this is your main system it would be helpfull if you add your system details to your profile. Please click on the link and follow those instructions it could save some time when resolving this or further issues.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile

If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above :)

via the wireless card installed in the laptop.
You have not made them visible as indicated in Wildfire's quote above.

With a wireless connection, not a wired one. My laptop and yours have both, disabling the wired nic won't affect your wireless connection.

That is only a quick fix though, it won't resolve the issue so if you can please post your findings from device manager

Ok, it's a different problem from first described so I'll step back and leave this to the Hardware/Networking gurus.

Good luck effectsman and I hope your problem is resolved soon.

You presumably connect wirelessly to the Internet via a router - have you rebooted the router. What other computers also use that connection and which OS are they running?

Have you tried removing the wireless card through Device Manager and rebooting to allow Windows to redetect and reload the drivers. Have you looked for an updated driver?

I appear to be up & running with the help of the network magic team am posting their suggestions
    ) Open the start menu
    2) Type in "services.msc" without the quotes into the search field (in Windows XP you will click on run.. then Type in "services.msc" without the quotes
    3) Click enter
    4) Click 'Continue" when the Windows Permission alert comes up
    5) in the Services window that opens up find Wireless Zero Configuration
    6) Right click on Wireless Zero Configuration and select "Start"

    Then:

    1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.
    2. Right-click your Wireless connection and select Properties
    3. Click on the Wireless tab at the top
    4. Check the box at the top that says "Use Window to connect to your Wireless Network ".
    5. Click OK
    2. Right-click your Wireless connection and select View Available Wireless Networks.
    3. Left-click the link on the left that reads "Change the order of preferred networks. "

You can then arrange those networks so that your computer will attempt to connect to your router first. Note that you may need to re-enter your router's encryption key.

Once connected through windows you will then repair connection in Network Magic and you should now be able to share.

Please let us know if this does not resolve your issue or if you need further assistance.

    Thanks!

    Thank you for sharing :)
