I was on my way to give you a word of encouragement, Sal, when I noticed your more recent posting. Apparently you have solved the problem. Good work. But I think I will post this anyway. A lot of us are on this same level. We can do these jobs with detailed instruction. There is a first time for everthing.
A prominent computer magazine recently published a tutorial for upgrading your BIOS. It is not that hard. In the time and space that you wasted excoriating the poor girl, you could have listed the steps.
In order to boot from the installation CD, we must go into BIOS and set first boot device to CDROM. We need someone to tell us that, but it is not a profound technological mystery. It just takes a little basic skill in the English language to get that point across.
But there is one very important point, Sal, which justifies their reluctance to advise you: it usually makes more sense to buy a new machine. The new hardware conflicts with the old; and even when it works, it is limited by the old. A new computer with last year's technology is dirt cheap.
But you already have the hard drive, so you might as well install it. Who cares if your motherboard is two years old? It will still work fine.
The 64 dollar question is, will your applications work with Windows 2000? When I moved up to WinXP, I had nothing but headaches until I upgraded all my apps. While I do not regret the move, it was not cheap. That might be a good reason to stick with Win98. But with both drives installed, you can play around and check it out.
I am a firm believer in the clean install. If you cannot win it within an hour, declare nuclear war. If the fresh installation does not fix the problem, only then does prolonged troubleshooting make sense- in my opinion. She comes back clean as a whistle- tanned and rested and ready to rock. Just keep all your CDs in one convenient place, and write your setting and registration numbers on one convenient list.
I am an expert in this. Before I finally broke down and upgraded my apps, I had to reinstall WinXP three times. Prior to that, I had thought installing the OS was a dangerous operation which had to be done in a laboratory by people with advanced degree. The techs are always saying, "And whatever you do, kids, don't never ever format the hard drive. The Earth will open up and swallow you whole. "
I don't know why these guys bailed out on you, Sal. Probably they do not want the responsibility of corrupting a minor. But you have all your data backed up, and you have all your CD's; so what difference does it make if you ***** the machine up before you take it to the shop. That is what screwdrivers are for.
Incidentally folks, the link to Blackviper on another thread, I forget which one, is one of the best things anyone has ever shown me. Now when my firewall runs in like it was the end of the world, shouting, "ISASS.EXE IS TRYING TO ACCESS THE INTERNET! ", I can go to Blackviper and find out what it is. A lot of very experienced computer professionals do not know the answer to that question.

Whoa down there Pilgrim ...... I think if you look around these boards, Sal_Gal is the one who bailed. I think her quote was that she was "tired of messing around ".

Regardless, your opinion is always welcome. Careful though - Expert breaks down into two basic components.

    X is an unknown......
Spurt is a drip under pressure.......

    WHOA !! HELP !!!!!

Wait a bit here. Is there somthing wrong with my eyes or machine ??? This book appears ( to me and my machine anyway ) to be incomplete.

The page that had this "tired of messing around ". seems to be missing.

And also the page that contained what I believe was the final fix ( for the Audio anyway ) by replacing an incompatable audio card with a compatable one.

I will post this and go back and do some more checking. Then come back and edit if needed.

    EDIT:

I show nothing between a post by Rockster2u on Nov. 27th and the post by Duke on Dec. 8th.

There you go again BB. Here's my soundcard post from November 28th on her other (had 5 going at one time between 2 boards) Win2K thread in hardware:

"Guess you have two threads going on the same topic now. This one answered one of my earlier questions posted in the other one. You can find your drivers here:
    http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads...ds11/10215.html

Your card is Win2K compatable, but you might want to flip over to the other thread and read my post there re: on-board disabled question. You should also check any MB jumpers because you also had a problem with your old 98 installation that was never addressed.

If you are spending an inordinate amount of time on this, Fdisk, format and install Win2K with nothing but your video card in there. You know this is going to take less than an hour and your system comes up clean. Note: my earlier comments on this were never disputed - the reply was that when one did the same thing twice they got the same result twice - prolific, huh? You may also find a re-read my11/18 and 11/25 posts to be helpful. "

Then she had a post on 11/28 that you might have missed:

"At 1 a.m. this morning I ordered a new sound card
There's a HCL list and the sound card and modem weren't listed as W2K compatible, so I ordered a new sound card. If it don't work, I'll send it back.
[I don't feel like messing with this anymore. I just hope the new devices I'm ordering works] "

You might have also missed her comments on the Windows 2000 BBS, but what the heck - its history now. Some enjoy turning an hour and a half project into several days. Like I said early on - whatever blows your skirt up.

Yo Billy Bob - thought I'd spare your eyes and your machine a little strain. Just looked em up - she had 5 active threads going on the 28th. Start dates - 11/16, 11/24, 11/24, 11/27 and 11/28.

Guess that Old Crow comes in liquid form too .......

    Hey YoYo ( oops !! I mean Rockster2U )

Would you kindly knock off the **** and READ MY POST MORE CAREFULLY.

If I can read my own writing ( which I have in print right in front of me ) right at the top of the reply appears in bold letters the word HELP!!!!

I was asking for help. Not a bunch of needless, does not apply ****.

If it is a problem with my machine then maybe someone can point it out and help me fix it.

It also says what I believe was the solution. It does not say it WAS the solution.

It also says I am not seing any replys made between one by Rockster2U on Nov 27th and the one by Dude on the 9th of Dec.

And I do remember a post after the 27th about ordering a new sound card and not wanting to mess with it anymore. But that is the part that seems to not be showing up.

I think it just might be your turn to eat crow.

    Rockster2U

    That did help.

What I was looking for is actually
    here

Which does say the solution was a new card.

Apparrently I either did not have search set properly or just plain missed it.

When you said there were 5 posts and I had only found 3 I started over and found the answer.

So I guess that makes this post A OK
