    Hello all,
Have a slight problem, i am running windows xp (home edition)...thought i had a virus on my system, ran several checks, spybot, spyware, malware, cleaner, and even norton anti virus, had alsorts show up...like...marketscore, c-dilla, bonzibuddy, troj/anaftp_01....and also something called DSO EXPLOIT, which i cannot get rid of at all....It has serious messed up my system, and started to remove programs......i went for a system restore, which it would not even let me do that, so i formatted my hard drive, thought that rectified the problem, but sure enough today its all started again....
I have norton antivirus 2003, have run that, and its found nothing on the system, but for some reason it will not let me run the "live update" facility...it keeps showing:
    1. symantec intrusion detection signature
    2. norton internet security security updates
    3. norton internet security program updates
    3. ids program updates
All of the above are shown when i try and run the live update....also on the norton antivirus screen the "auto protect" is showing "off ", and the email scanning is showing an error....i have tried to go into the options menu to change this, but everytime i do, it just reverts back to the above.....this is driving me mad....i thought when i reformatted my hard drive this would rectify the problem, but it hasnt.......would appreciate some advice, if anyone can help.....tks in advance (from a very stressed beginner)....

bigwills - I'm not sure how much luck you are going to have with any of the regulars giving you help on this issue since you tend to leave us without any feedback on your results when you post a question, someone does some research and posts suggestions and you ........

    bigwills,

DSO EXPLOIT is a security gap in IE. You may try this site for info. Also, make suree you have all of the Windows updates. There was an update to fix that gap, not sure which one it was though.

Get DSO removed/fixed and see if you can run Live Update again. You may have to uninstall Norton's and reinstall it again.

Also, try running Ad-Aware and delete all items that show up. You can find that program here.

Hopefully, between these links and those from HeyJeff, you will make some progress. Let me know how it goes.

    Mike

If after a format & reinstall of windows, you immediately have the same issues then:
    1. you could have a boot sector virus
    2. backed up files that you accessed may be infected
    3. files on a different drive or partition, or removable media may be infected.

A format and reinstall makes a 100% clean system unless the above enter into the computation.

Thanks for update. I'm confused about the "ids program" in NAV 2003. I have 2003 and when I run Live Update, there is no listing for "ids program" there. Could you pass on a little info on that program for me? Thanks.

    Mike,
the IDS (Intrusion Detection System) is part of NIS (Norton Internet Security) and if You have Norton AntiVirus alone, You don't have IDS.

TonyT is correct. If formatting has cleaned your drive, you are lucky. I fdisk and remove the partition and remake it so it's completely rewitten - boot sectors and partition tables included. I found that flashing the BIOS is sometimes necessary to get a machine working properly after an attack.
