If you like the Google toolbar as an add-on, then yes, put it back on and see what happens. Do get a fresh download of the setup though. It would be nice to confirm one way or the other if it was a factor.

    Thanks for your help

One thing i have noticed is that for the past 3 days, my AVG8 has failed to update its definitions. Do you think this has anything to do with my recent problems?

    Thanks

Previously i told you i would reinstall the goolge tool bar to see if the redirect problem re occurs.

Well i have just insstalled it and spybot flagged up about 5 registry changes. I accepted them all and the toolbar installed.

I then did a google search using the GT and the redriect problem reoccured. I tried a google.co.uk search and the re direct problem reoccured. I uninstalled the google toolbar and the redirect problem desisted.

My conclusion is that some thing is sitting on my computer and it attack whnen i install the GT. What do you suggest? Have you ever seen this before?

Another question is, if it hasnt been 'got rid of' what else could it be doing, stealing my information?

    Thanks

Are you using a previously downloaded file to install the Google Toolbar?
Suggest you try a new installer obtained from here and see if the results are the same.

I downloaded a fresh GT and the problem occured.

It was from the same location as you suggested.

However, i have formatted my computer today, installed the toolbar and everything is fine. Im not sure why or how the toolbar was being attacked...

Is there anything else you want me to do?

Well, nothing to do as far as cleanup if you've formatted. Make sure to get the system fully updated with Windows Updates and properly protected with antivirus and firewall. Geri has posted some very helpful information and recommendations regarding future protection in the following link.

I have the following versions of protection installed

    Zonelarm (free version)
    AVG 8 (free version)
    Spybot SD

Do you think this will suffice?

I shall also read and heed your link

    I have read the 'ounce of prevention' article and i have a few questions;

    I have fulfilled steps 1,2 and 4.

My computer isnt lightning fast (about 6 yrs old) although i have kept up todate with all the latest windows updates, virus defs and zone alarm updates.

There are alot of programmes in that list and i am worried that if i get them all, my computer will just grind to a halt. In your opinion, what is essentail, and what is 'belts and braces'?

    Thanks

I doubt you would see any impact on performance from any of those programs, and if you did it would only mean uninstalling it. I believe you should check each application's ability/function, then decide for yourself if it would be of benefit to you.
