Apart from slowing things down, I have never noticed any problems using Norton Internet Security but I have Ghost Images created at different steps of the installation. I can restore an Image created prior to installing NIS, slap IE8 on top of it and see how it behaves.

Could you, please, answer my question(s) in post #18?

Uninstalling Flash Player 10.0.22.87 and installing 10.0.32.18 wasn't the solution.

It was fun, though, to see the hopefully automatic translation from English to Swedish in Adobe's Download Manager ... :D ... ! If a person did the translating, he/she should be flogged ... ... preferrably online.

(I haven't had time to restore an earlier Ghost Image. My level of motivation is low since I don't believe it will change anything.)

    An update:

I never got around to do that, call me lazy but I'm convinced that it would not be the solution.

I never wasted my time on that project since it would be a shot in the dark and you can't blame everything on Norton.

    New finding:

I usually have the Favorites Panel fixed/stuck on the left side of the screen and I close it only when I need the full width. For one reason or another, I had it closed and selected to go to Adobe from the Menu Bar > Favorites dropdown menu. Everything worked just fine and to test, I clicked the "Favorites Button" and when it dropped down, I choose to fix/stick it. After that, IE8 froze. I hovered the mouse pointer over the grey "X" to close the Favorites Panel. After half a minute or so, the "X" turned to red colour and I clicked it to close the Favorites Panel. After a few seconds it closed and all was well again.

(Fix/Stick - my computer speaks Swedish and I don't know the correct terminology in English but what I mean is to make the Favorites Panel "stay put ".)

So, either reducing the size of the window or closing the Favorites Panel seem to be a "work around" but not a solution.

    Compatibility Mode:

When browsing, the "Compatibility Mode Button" appears on some web pages (like Adobe) but not on other web pages (like Windows BBS).

    Conclusion:

The problem has nothing to do with neither my hardware nor my software but Adobe's site is not fully compatible with IE8.

I think that Flash Player is compatible with IE8 since it works fine on other web pages.

Have to disagree with you there :)

No problems here IE 8 on Windows 7 Pro x64 - using the 32 bit version of IE and the latesr version of Flash Player..

Do you get the "Compatibility Mode Button" (*)?

(*) which to me indicates incompatibility as opposed to webpages that do not trigger IE8 to display the "Compatibility Mode Button "

I have tried it and also entered "adobe.com" in the list to always run in Compatibility Mode. It still freezes IE8 but in a slightly different way.

Next question ... ... what triggers IE8 to offer the "Compatibility Mode Button" or rather, what triggers IE8 to NOT trigger the "Compatibility Mode Button "?

Today, I took the opportunity to check out adobe.com on a Dell running XP SP3 and IE6. I expected it to work just fine but to my surprize, it froze exactly like on my BOAC. I closed the Favorites Panel > it worked, opened the Favorites Panel > it froze. On the same computer, Firefox 3.5.3 was installed and no problems with adobe.com there, regardless of Bookmarks Panel open or not.

    Gremlins at work?

As a matter of interest have you tried IE in no add-on mode?

    Pete,
no, I haven't. I haven't installed any add-on's. I have searched but can't find the spot to change the mode.

Found it ... ... Flash Player didn't run but IE8 still froze at adobe.com when the Favorites Panel was open but not when it was closed.

Another experiment to try out - export your Favourites and then delete the lot from IE and see if that has any effect.

I had the same problem with Adobe, except when I uninstalled Adobe as an add on or disabled the flash, IE8 ran smoothly. Adobe and Ie8 don't mix. I disable the flash until I need it until someone comes up with a solution...

There is something strange going on, the cause of which is a mystery to me - I have no problem with Flash, Adobe.com and IE 8 on 2 OS's - Win 7 Pro x64 and XP Pro SP3.

    Pete,
I backup my Favorites using Replicator and can just deleted the lot. When done testing, I can copy them back from the backup. Will do that later and report the results.

Until recently, Flash Player could be installed without letting "Adobe Download Manager" get installed but no longer. I will try uninstalling that one to see what happens. (If it makes a difference, I think that Flash Player can be downloaded and saved locally from Adobe Flash Player Support Center. If I install it off-line, "Adobe Download Manager" might be avoided.)

    aintmisbehavinn,
running IE8 in "no addons mode" (Flash Player not loading) made no difference on my system.

    Pete,
    no luck deleting all Favorites.

To my surprize, "Adobe Download Manager" was not listed in Add/Remove programs. I can swear that I've seen it install during the download/installation of Flash Player at Adobe's and that it appeared in Add/Remove programs ... ...
