OK. I'm currently connecting with other laptop. How do I go about deleting these preferred connection locations?

Try doing an ipconfig on both laptops and see what you get.

    1. I have turned off the laptop where I can connect with WIFI, and it makes no difference. Still cannot connect on the other computer using WIFI.

    2. I did the IPCONFIG /ALL command for both laptops. Results are below:

This may sound like a silly question but; did you check to see if wifi is turned on? I've seen it happen more than once where the user had accidentally turned it off and didn't realize it. In fact, my son just called me a couple nights ago with the same problem and that's what he did. It happens.

yes, WIFI is turned on and the diagnostics indicate that I am connected to wireless signal. I cannot, however, connect to the internet. IE shows "unable to display ".

I would appreciate it if someone can review the previous post with IPCONFIG data for both laptops. If there are any interpretations / comments, please send them. Thanks.

To remove a wireless network, in Network And Sharing Center, click Manage Wireless Networks. Select a network to delete and click Remove.

If anyone has a suggestion after reviewing the two IPCONFIG logs, please comment. There are obviously some differences in the settings. If I should change some settings on the computer where I cannot connect via WIFI, please comment on what should be changed and how I go about it.

This is what I would do if I was sitting in front of your laptop:

    1. Remove all existing wifi connections. These are access points that the laptop has connected to in the past, stored by Windows. To remove a wireless network, in Network And Sharing Center, click Manage Wireless Networks. Select a network to delete and click Remove.

    2. If no joy, uninstall the wireless adapter via Device Manager & reboot. Windows will detect the "new hardware" and auto load the existing driver.

    3. If no joy, go to manufacturer Website and download the latest available driver for the adapter. Run its installation program.

As well I would manually configure the adapter properties like so.

    1. Open Network & Sharing Center.

    2. Click Change adapter settings.

    3. Rt click the wifi adapter > select Properties.

    4. Unisntall QoS

    5. Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)

    6. Double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

    7. Check Obtain an IP address automatically & Obtain DNC server address automatically.

    8. Click Advanced button.

    9. Click WINS tab.

    10. Uncheck use LM Hosts lookup & check Enable Netbios over TCP/IP.

I would also change the Computer Name of this laptop. Your other computer has the same name: Dennis-PC. The router/access point will promarily use the MAC addresses of a computer's adapters to identify it, as they are all always different, but the Host name is also cached by the router, and the router may lag or fail to assign an IP adresss to a host it "thinks" is already connected or "thinks" is associated with a different MAC address. Iee:
it's never a good idea to give different computers the same name. See:
Rename the Computer - Microsoft Corporation

Thanks for the logical and systematic suggestions. Unfortunately, I did everything you suggest and I still cannot connect to internet with WIFI. I am about to give up. If anyone has other ideas, please comment.

    (chime – another cook)

Obvious you’re not getting an IP address from router.

Looks like tried most things that should’ve worked.

    Time for an end run.
Set up a static IP n see what happens. Usually what I do with networks anyway.

Don’t have Vista so will try from memory – or you can google - set up static IP in vista -
Click on properties of wireless connection then properties of Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4).
Check - Use the following IP addresses:

Would help if knew make, model of router to see what's there for possibly better numbers.

But these static values should work from what posted from ipconfig/all
    IP address 192.168.1.09
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway 192.168.1.1
    DNS server 200.48.225.130
    200.48.225.146

Few things a little strange – like those DNS server IP’s are direct (this is from wired connection ) – normally those would be entered into router. Then networked computers would just address the router – 192.168.1.1

1 other thing to consider – wireless card took a permanent vacation.
A USB 1 could be bought for under $20.00.

If use a static IP address, you can also just enter 192.168.1.1 for the DNS server address. You don't need to enter a secondary address.

FINALLY ! That did it. Thanks Ephemarial ! Adding these addresses enabled me to connect via WIFI. I've spent a lot of hours trying to figure this out ... (as you can tell from the previous 36 posts). I gather, however, that this indicates there is still a "failure" somewhere (router or laptop) - since I should have been able to connect without entering these addresses. Correct? Thanks again. Another success story for WINDOWSBBS and support to members!!

Now we know the problem is not the wireless adapter.

What's failing is either DHCP in the router or DHCP on your computer.

Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services and set the DHCP service to STOPPED & MANUAL if use a static IP address and set to AUTOMATIC & STARTED is want to get an IP address from the router.

I would suggest trying auto connect again with the DHCP service started. If you can't get it working with DHCP then you'll have to manually set an IP address and DNS address every time you travel with the laptop. And some wifi hotspots may deny static addressing.

And while in Admin Tools, check the event logs for event re failing DHCP.

OK, Tony. Thanks for the feedback. I will follow your advice (maybe tomorrow). One comment, however: Since I have a 2nd laptop that is working fine, wouldn´t this tend to indicate that the problem with DHCP is in the computer rather than the router? I will do proceedures outlined and re-post tomorrow. Thanks again.

Yes, it appears that the issue ios with just this computer.
Let's see your Services, it could be that the DHCP service or a dependancy is problematic.
On the laptop, open a command prompt and enter this code, then post the contents of the txt file it generates. (the file services.txt will be saved on your Desktop)

    Code:
    sc query type= all state= all > Desktop\services.txt
