I have the same problem with IE6 (62800.1106), but I use W2000 (SP4), not XP, which is the subject of the link you give, Charles.
To be more precise, I detected that IE typically freezes when I click on the page to activate the scroll wheel, not everytime, but it's been once a day lately. I also noticed that after that happens, if I restart IE without rebooting, when I click on "open in new window" on a link, my popup blocker stops it; I don't know if it's related, but it seems to be.

I just checked that I have all the updates listed in that KB article, except 929874. Is there a different hotfix? What would happen if I uninstalled those 3 updates?

    Hello clefrapper,

I'm splitting of your post from alboy's thread and creating a seperate thread of your own,

From what you write, this problem is triggered by a hardware device - the Mouse, so this isn't the same problem that alboy is experiencing.

I'll ask the hardware specialists to look at it. If it is indeed hardware, we'll move the thread.

In the meantime, looking for non hardware causes, can you pinpoint about when this started? Did it start with the MS Updates? Always a possibility that updates have unintended side effects.

You can also see if it's any IE add-on that's a problem. IE6's tools > Manage > and disable add-ons one at a time. Most likely not the problem, but worth a check.

And if you're feel comfortable in uninstalling the MS Updates, worth a shot.

As an FYI for others, this post was split from this thread: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=68382

    Hi,

If I notice problems with the cursor/mouse in a browser, I look at updating Java.
    http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp?locale=en&host=www.java.com
Maybe also Adobe Flashplayer (there is also a Shockwave player there).
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BIOW

A problem with the mouse? I would borrow a different mouse to try, although, if there is any special software installed for running the mouse, that loads at startup, it may need to be disabled (check the icons in the Notification Tray).

    Matt

Thank you both for looking at my problem.

Since my first post, I have confirmed that my mouse had nothing to do with it. It's just that when something freezes, you find out only by trying to do something with the mouse.

I also reinstalled Java, got the latest in the process, but the problem persists.

I suspect it has to do with the Windows updates that I installed a couple of weeks ago. I will try uninstalling the 3 which were listed as suspicious in the KB article given in alboy's thread.

I'll let you know if that stops the freezing.

Well, I did remove the 3 Windows updates, but IE just froze again. It is not related to any website, it's pretty much random. I usually have 4 or 5 sites open at the same time, and they've all done it at one time or another.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Charles, the 2 sites you give are both for XP, not for 2K, and on MS helpwith windows/2000, I can't find any reference to fixing IE6.

What if I download a new version of IE6? Wouldn't it override my existing (presumably corrupted) version?

Any guidance on how to go about reinstalling IE6 would be welcome.

    Thanks

    Claude

    Hi clefrapper,

W2K specific sfc with further links: http://www.petri.co.il/what's_system_file_checker.htm Don't see a difference except for some of the command switches.

IE6 repair with info on re installing IE6 http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial71.html

Another thought, perhaps the problem is one of the add-ons of IE6.

IE tools > manage > add-ons. Try disabling one by one, or disable all and if the problem is gone, re enable one by one.

And have you looked into the possibilty of malware? Perhaps running in the background.

    Charles, I can't find IE tools > manage > add-ons on my computer. Remember, I use W2K.
However, I did find IE tools > Internet Options > Advanced and I 'disabled third party browser extensions' and the problem seems to have gone away. However, I can't find where a list might be so that I can enable them one at a time and find the culprit. Any idea where such a list may be?

    Thanks again

    Claude

    Hi Claude,

It is and it isn't a matter of the OS :)

I think you're running a pre SP1 version of IE6. Manage add-ons was added with the service pack.

It came with XP's SP2 back in 2004. Since then, users of w2k and Win98/WinME can download/install Service Pack1: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms649478.aspx

To make sure, look in IE's tool bar > Help > about.

BTW, I put an extra "Manage" into the instructions. Should read - IE tools > Manage Add-ons.

Charles, the Help > About IE panel shows that I have SP1, but I followed your link and downloaded it. I'll keep you posted on the results after I install it. If you get this before I install (tonight after work), let me know if I am wasting my time. I would prefer not to have to do it.

    Hi Claude,

Ok, according to that - you have SP1. Do you have popup blocking with your version, another new SP1 feature.

Maybe another way to do this.

Do you run Spybot seach and destroy? It has a tool list, one of those tools can toggle BHO's and ActiveX browser objects.

From the main page on the left near the bottom, you'll see Tools. Click on that and in the Tools page, click on BrowserHelperObjects. At the top there is info on what they are and how to disable/enable them by Toggling. Click on any one and the item expands. I would look at the BHO's first.

Have to be in Advanced Mode - under Mode upper left corner.

Thanks Charles, I do have Spybot S&D, I'll try it, after I finish these 2 jobs I have. I can't afford to shut down my computer right now. I'll keep you posted.

    Hi Charles,

I found the BHO list on Spybot. So far I've turned back on Acrobat reader, Google toolbar, Norton AV helper, and it's still working. Next I have to try the Java helper, and I'll see. But I suspect now that was the culprit. I also have a Skype helper, but I don't need it, so I won't bother turning it back on.

Thanks for the Spybot tip, it was kind of hidden in there.

Hi claude, thanks for the update :)
I find SpyBot's tools its most valuable aspect.
