I don't know how much "from scratch" you are willing to go. By now, I would have reinstalled Windows on a clean hard drive out of sheer frustration. Certainly in this amount of time, you would be up and running.
If you saved the files (I think you had the option) when you upgraded IE the first time, you should be able to go to Add/Remove and go back to IE4 that came with Win98. Then try again to reinstall IE6 with all the options, and then MS VM.

The details of the 98 system file check escape me, but I remember there was such an animal in System Information and that the default settings didn't do much. I needed to change the settings to get a thorough check done, extract each missing file individually from the CD, and that it took a long time, though probably no more time than you have tried to solve this problem.

I am almost convinced at this point that something else is interfering with the operation or installation of IE. Possibly antivirus, but that is only a guess based on past experiences with NAV.

Where do you want to go from here, boss? I'm not jumping ship:p .

The button for the Flash download was a .gif. Do you have any gif's on your computer that you can try to open with IE through the File menu?

Found 2 more possibilities. Encoding, in the View menu, is not set at Automatic or Western European (Windows), and problems with web links and image displays when using an SiS video card.

I'll try to address your comments/suggestions:
    1. I have run sfc (system file checker)....ok, no problems.
    2. I did save files when I upgraded from IE5.01SP2. I recently, with all of our discussions, deleted IE6 and then reinstalled the complete package (rather than selective install). Then I downloaded and installed MS MV
    3. Encoding in view menu is set at Western European (windows)
    4. question: what do U mean "problem with web-links and image displays when using SiS card "?
    5. I have many Gifs that I've "saved picture as" and have them in a folder on desktop. I cllck on any icon in folder and the animated Gif displays. I can right-click it, copy, then paste in an e-mail. So my Gifs work in that mannner.
    6. I have had Norton System Works 2002, which includes NAV on this machine since March 2002, with no problems. The problem may lie in a downloaded program within the past month, and I can't recall any specific download.
    7. Some good news. There was a URL that I had been trying to access these many weeks, and this prompted me to initiate this THREAD......which has certainly given U "headaches', even worse than mine. Anyway, Believe It!!! I have had success in getting that web-page open....it doesn't "throw" me back to my desktop, as I indicated in my first post. So, don't know which of your Steps that U told me to follow has achieved that.
    8. At this point, rather than trying to re-install Win98SE from my CD, I think that I will live with what I have, and say "a blessing upon U ".

It is certainly hard to understand how a display driver could prevent graphics, and especially web links, from working properly in IE, but in rummaging around, that is exactly what I found.
Check your display driver in Device Manager. If it is an SiS (Silicon Integrated Systems) card, then the KB article I saw (did not save the link) said simply to reinstall the most recent display driver.

    Good luck.

When I go to Drivers, and click on Display driver, this is what I see: ATI Rage Pro and when I click on Properties it tells me device is working properly. (A week or so ago, I did re-install the Rage Pro driver).
As an aside: the reason that I checked on the driver was that I couldn't play a DVD. I get an error message: Visual C++Run Time Library. In fact, I still can't....driver didn't do anything for me.

I guess SiS doesn't involve me.

I just downloaded your last two suggestions.....not sure what they will do for me.
    So, to summarize our/my experiences:
I got into one web-page that I was desperately trying to access.
I still get the white box with the redX for some graphics on some web-pages.
    (I think that I will give you "the-rest-of-the-day-off ").
I apologize for coming across like a novice/dummy.

    To offer U a "reward ", I'd like to give U a link:

    www.irvings-info-page.cityslide.com

(copy/paste to your browser address bar....don't know how to make a clickable link her). I have done a lot of work on this site and I hope that U will find some worthwhile computer tips and cool links....mostly for Win98, and might work for other versions.
There are also misc. tips for you, your wife of girl friend, and some non-computer thoughts and expressions.
Why not take a moment and sign my guestbook?
